from a person who is religious but not spiritual through a 300-word essay. Consider

“Spirituality begins when religion ends’’

- Sr. Joan Chitister, OSB

TITLE: The Divergent Paths of Spirituality and Religion

How spirituality and religion so easily get tangled up in common usage comes clear when
we consider the people who possess the one and lack the other. Sr. Joan Chittister’s
beautiful quote, ‘Spirituality begins when religion ends,’ is an excellent lens through
which we can view this dichotomy.

A spiritually but not religious person is generally described as having a deep feeling of
belonging to something larger than themselves—a sense of purpose, wonder, and awe—
without needing to subscribe to the dogmas, rituals, or institutions of formal religion. His
or her spirituality may be an enduring affection for nature, a feeling of responsibility to
do what is right, or a personal search for meaning and understanding. He or she may find
comfort in meditation, mindfulness, or other practices to achieve inner peace and union.
His or her spiritual beliefs are very individualized and possibly unclassifiable within any
traditional religious system. They are motivated by an inner sense of right and wrong,
guided by their own vision of the universe and their place in the universe.

On the other hand, a religious but not necessarily a spiritual person might be a dogmatic
follower of religious dogma and religious practice but not necessarily have an inner
feeling of oneness with the divine or a deep sense of meaning. Their religious practice
might be routine, conformed to the norms of society, or based on a need to belong
rather than on a deep spiritual experience. They might appear to follow religious dogma
but not necessarily live by the values they espouse. They might be immersed in the
machinery of religious practice without the experiential possibility of spiritual awakening.

Chittister’s quotation is that authentic spirituality is beyond the borders of institutional

religion. Religion, with its formalized structures and codified laws, is prone to stifle the
free, personal expression of spirituality. To some, the formal rigor of religious dogma will
be an obstacle in the path of their expression of the divine on a profoundly personal
level. Spirituality is a personal process of self-discovery, an individualized quest for
meaning. It is an open-ended odyssey of the human spirit, unencumbered by the
boundaries of institutional religion. Religion can be a framework for spiritual
development, but not for the profound sense of attachment to something greater than
one’s self that characterizes spirituality
