Square Roots, Cube Roots, Perfect Squares/Cubes, and Irrational
Numbers
1. Key Ideas
- Square root of a number a is a number b such that b² = a. - A perfect square is an integer equal to
n² for some integer n. - Cube root of a is a number c such that c³ = a. - A perfect cube is an integer
equal to n³ for some integer n. - A number is irrational if it cannot be expressed as a fraction of
integers. - Simplify square roots by factoring out perfect-square factors.
2. Perfect Squares & Square Roots
Perfect squares: 0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225, 256, 289, 324, 361,
400. Examples: √36 = 6, √144 = 12, √1 = 1. Non-perfect square examples: √2 ≈ 1.414 (irrational),
√3 ≈ 1.732 (irrational). Simplify: √50 = √(25×2) = 5√2, √72 = √(36×2) = 6√2.
3. Perfect Cubes & Cube Roots
Perfect cubes: 0, 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000. Examples: ■27 = 3, ■8 = 2, ■125 =
5, ■(-8) = -2. ■2 ≈ 1.2599 (irrational), ■16 ≈ 2.5198 (irrational).
4. Rational vs Irrational Roots
- Perfect square/cube roots → rational. - Non-perfect → irrational. Examples: √49 = 7 (rational), √50
= 5√2 (irrational), ■64 = 4 (rational), ■20 (irrational).
5. Locating Roots on the Number Line
Example: √2 is between 1 and 2 (≈1.414), √5 ≈ 2.236 (between 2 and 3), ■16 ≈ 2.52 (between 2
and 3).
