Some people believe that studying at university or college is the best route to a
successful career, while others believe that it is better to get a job straight after
school. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
The idea that career paths of young people remain a source of controversy.
Some individuals claim that studying at university or college plays a crucial role
in a flourishing career while others suggest that starting a job right after school
brings about more advantages. I am a firm supporter of the former and this
essay will outline both views.
On the one hand, entering the workforce immediately after graduating from
high school can pave the way for people to gain early work experience. This
early exposure to real-life jobs helps young individuals cultivate practical skills,
such as communication, time management, and problem-solving, which are
highly valued by employers. Besides, this career path empowers people to
explore their passions in a more practical context. For example, a successful
entrepreneur, Steve Jobs, began his technology business at a young age without
completing formal higher education. Hence, getting a job early not only enables
individuals to develop hands-on skills but also to pursue their personal interests.
On the other hand, I firmly believe that attending university or college offers
more long-term advantages in terms of career development. It opens the door to
a wider range of career opportunities, especially in professional fields, thereby
enabling individuals to acquire specialized knowledge and develop critical
skills. Moreover, higher education can catalyse higher earning potential in the
long run. A survey by Queen’s University, for instance, revealed that the average
income of individuals with a university degree is approximately three times
higher than that of those without one in Beijing, China. Therefore, obtaining a
university or college degree opens up job avenues and provides higher salaries.
By way of conclusion, while both paths have their benefits, higher education
generally provides better employment prospects and lucrative income for
people, which is why university education remains the most reliable choice for
long-term success.
