Exercises 1 and 2
Interviewer: Today, we’re going to talk about social media. Most teens describe these platforms as a key tool for connecting with others, being
creative and learning more about the world. But they also struggle with more negative aspects of social media use, such as bullying or feeling
pressure to present themselves in a certain way. We invited four teenagers to share their experiences on social media with us. Tom, tell us about the
topics you usually post on social media.
Tom: Good morning. I usually post about my accomplishments at school or the happy moments I share with family and friends. I rarely share my
feelings or my personal problems on social media since I like to keep those issues private.
Interviewer: Grace, social media has given young people the ability to instantly connect with others and share photos or videos of special moments.
Do you usually post selfies or other type of pictures?
Grace: Of course! I often post selfies on Instagram. But I usually post things that only my closest friends and family members would understand and
not really pictures or videos I expect to go viral.
Interviewer: Speaking of close friends, do you believe social media helps develop your friendships, Pam?
Pam: Well, I’m a huge fan of social media and I truly believe that it has a positive impact in many aspects of my life. I get to know what’s going on in
my friends’ lives and so I feel a lot more connected with them, too. So yes, through Instagram, for example, I feel more in touch with my friends.
Besides, I have their support when I’m experiencing something difficult, and I also have the chance to show my creative side and be appreciated.
Interviewer: Jordan, you have a different perspective, right?
Jordan: That’s true. I had some bad experiences with social media, so I stopped using it. Unfriend or unfollow people on social media is something
common and it really had a negative effect on me a few years ago. I would come back from school and all the problems I had with friends would stay
with me all day, even when I wasn’t with them.
Interviewer: Thank you all for being here with us today!

How Massive Headphones Became the New “It” Accessory

Out with the wires, in with the bulk
By Marylyn La Jeunesse
July 5, 2022
Two things in the fashion world are always certain. The first
5 is that even the most hated fads1 will eventually find their way
back to the runway2. The second is that TikTok has become
the blueprint for reviving said dead trends. We all know how
influential this social app can be on the beauty front, but
fashion is not left behind. From baggy ‘90s pants to
10 controversial gauzy3 dresses and everything in between,
FashionTok has become a place to not only share your daily
‘fits’ but also look for inspiration and crown new “It”
accessories.
If you’ve spent some time on the app as of late, you might have noticed that no outfit is
seemingly4 complete without a pair of massive headphones. Yes, FashionTok has officially
15 swapped 2021’s must-have “It” accessory (aka wired headphones) for chunky 5 over-the-head
“cans” – nicknamed for their noise-canceling ability.
For fashion historian Rachel Weingarten, this trend has been a long time coming.
“Fashion always fluctuates6. So, if we see micro-sized cell phones, the next versions will be
20 oversized,” she tells Teen Vogue. “If small earbuds were a trend and they were selling well,
fashion-forward companies need to turn the trend on its ear (as it were) and find the exact
opposite trend.”
Weingarten says this can happen for several reasons, but a shift in trends is normally
ignited by “the chic”, who want to “set themselves apart from the rest.” In this case, because
25 everyone was wearing small wired earbuds, “the chic” moved on to wired headphones, and
when that became popular, they moved on to chunky headphones.
“We’re seeing trends that people who belong to a
younger demographic may never have previously
encountered. It’s new to them. It’s fun. It’s interesting
30 and conversation-worthy and Instagrammable,”
Weingarten explains. “We see the resurgence7 of vinyl,
so it makes sense that we’d see the silhouette of
earphones popular in that era.”
