ITEM 1 ( PHOTOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION)

Your school has organized a Geography field trip to Sipi Falls, one of Uganda’s most famous
waterfalls located on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. As you arrive, you are
welcomed by the thunderous sound of water plunging down steep rock faces, surrounded by
lush vegetation and mist. The guide explains that this natural feature attracts supports several
activities in the area.

Your Geography teacher wants you to carefully observe the physical and human features of the
area for your field report.

Task.

( a). Using your observation and knowledge, draw a well-labeled landscape sketch of Sipi Falls
and its surrounding area showing physical and human features.

( b) Explain the importance of Sipi Falls to the local area and to Uganda as a whole.

ITEM 2

Residents of a district in western Uganda (e.g., Rukungiri) live in the rift valley region.Recently,
elders in the village have been spreading myths that “the valleys were dug by giants long ago”
and that the cracks in the land are curses from angry gods.

The district education officer has asked your class to help explain the scientific truth about how
this landscape—part of the Western Arm of the East African Rift Valley—was really formed. You
are to travel there as a Geography outreach team.

Task.

(a) As a geography learner, explain how the above feature was formed.

(b) Help the villagers around the above feature understand the likely problems to be faced by
the area .

You are part of a school team conducting a field study along a river in western Uganda. As you
move from the source towards the mouth, you observe changes in the river’s shape and flow. At
one point, the river is fast-flowing while at another point, the river flows slowly. During your
study, local residents tell you about tourism at the waterfalls, fishing activities in the lower
areas, irrigation, and soil erosion problems in the steeper areas.

Task

( a) Describe the main stages of a river and their characteristics.

(b) Explain the benefits of rivers to the be economic development of Uganda.

ITEM 4

You are part of your school’s environmental club that has been invited to participate in a
regional conservation program. As part of the activities, your team visits Kibale Forest and
Mabira Forest—two dense tropical forests located in Uganda’s equatorial region.

A forest guide stops your group and requests you to observe the environment closely while he
explain the characteristics of the tropical rainforest.

Tasks:

(a) Describe the characteristics of equatorial vegetation of both kibale and Mabira forest.

(b) Explain the factors that have favoured the existence of equatorial vegetation in regions like
Kibale and Mabira forests..
