METHOD STATEMENT
Purpose:

This method statement is made to describe the sequence of activities involved for removal of
Cladding / insulation, removal of tubing / instruments / gauges, demolition of lines, erection of
pipe supports , welding , touch-up painting , NDE & installation of secondary containment.

Procedure:

The following steps should be taken to execute the mentioned task.

PRE-SHUTDOWN PHASE

 Identification & Color Coding of Piping to be replaced

The lines marked on attached isometrics will be surveyed at site & will be identified for marking.
The following is the scheme
 For Redundant items Yellow
 For Reuse items Blue
 For Cut Points Red
A tag mentioning the isometric no, P & ID no & tie-in no will be hanged on tie-in point.

 Erection of Scaffolding

 After identification scaffolding will be built on the location as per the work schedule. No
Scaffolding will be utilized unless it is tagged ‘‘SAFE FOR USE”.

 Removal of Insulation

 Once the tagging is done & tie-in point is identified, insulation activity can be preceded.
 Insulation will be removed after approval of the work permit.

 Material Arrangement

 All the material including pipe spool other hardware already identified on the work permit
will be collected in warehouse.
 Material related to specific task will be tagged for related Tie-In no.
 The specific material for a particular tie-in will be issued to concerned supervisor /
material coordinator only.

SHUTDOWN PHASE
 Pre-Requisites

 Maaden Operation will issue a permit prior to any activity.

 Removal of Instruments / gauges, Demolition of Piping

 Unbolting the flange to any near nozzle for gas test.

 After clearance of gas test start cutting.
 Mark the cutting location on existing line
 Hold the spool with manual hoisting and start cutting with grinder at point of cutting and
shifted the material to waste area as mentioned by Maaden.

 Connect New Line

 Shifting of spool with crane on trolley at clear location near the piping area, rig the trolley
towards the piping area , lift up the spool with the help of chain block , insert gasket bolting
the flanges of spool & nozzle as per isometric drawing

 Bolting / Connection

 Erection/fit up/bolting of spool. Perform necessary NDE requirements of these joint,

 Welding

 All welding work will be according to approved WPS and B31.3 and only qualified welders
will be employed.
 The welding work location will be shielded against wind.
 The weld surface will be cleaned with wire brush or grinding prior to welding operations to
give a surface free from rust, scale or mill coating.
 Between each layer of welding any cracks, pores or welding spatters will be removed by
grinding the surface before application of next layer.
 The appearance of finished welds will conform to ASME B31.3 code & WPS and will
exclude any under cuts, spatters, and cracks.

 Pipe Support Installation

 Prefabricated pipe support as mentioned on the isometric drawings & piping layout
drawings will be installed at indicated positions.
 Pipe support installation will follow the existing pipe rack or pipe isometric installation.

 Note For Bolted Connections

 For flanged connection, the surfaces in contact with gaskets will be checked before
assembly and all traces of dirt oxides & grease will be removed.
 The flanges will not be joined together without the insertion of gaskets.
 Projection of stud bolts will be equal on both sides.

 NDE

 10% Joint mentioned above will be inspected according to code & specific NDE schedule
as mentioned in the scope work.

 Touch Up Painting

 During erection of Spools care will be taken for damage of paint on new lines.
 After welding of pipe spool touch up painting will be performed as per specified painting
color as mentioned in the scope of work.

Permit Requirements

Scaffolding Erection Cold Work Permit

Removal of Cladding / Insulation Cold Work Permit
Cutting /Grinding/Welding of Spool Cold Work /Hot Work (Open Flame) Permit, Vehicle Entry
