Sustainable Development
In a recent study of Mahanayak B. (2024) where he stated that sustainable
development is a holistic approach that balances economic, social, and
environmental needs to meet present demands without compromising future
generations' ability to meet their own. In other words, sustainable development is the
action taken in conserving our environment in order for it to combat climate change,
biodiversity loss, pollution, and scarcity. Overall, sustainable development is not just
for environmental issue but a comprehensive strategy for economic and social
stability. It also entails the world's proactive role in promoting sustainability while
acknowledging the challenges that still need to be addressed.
Key Principles
The key principles of sustainable development are divided into three so called
"Three Pillars of Sustainable Development" are the environmental protection, social
equity, and economic viability. Environmental Protection dwells on the preservation
of the environment by being responsible in using of natural resources just like the
Trillion Tree Campaign, a global initiative that aims to plant one trillion trees
worldwide. Social Equity, this pillar ensures the well-being at individual's end. It
involves access to basic social services like education, health care, and housing.
Therefore, it is basically for improving the quality of life for all people, particularly
marginalized and vulnerable groups. Lastly, Economic Viability is generally focused
on economic growth as it aims to create economic opportunities that stays in the
long run without harming the planet's environment. The best example of this is
Angel's Burger's transition from using single use plastic as packaging to paper
packaging while ensuring continued profitability and creating sustainable economic
opportunities. In addition, in the study of Grytsan et al., (2024), they found that the
key principles of sustainable development encompass a holistic approach integrating
economic, social, and environmental goals into enterprise strategies. These
principles emphasize balance, innovation, transparency, and long-term orientation.
Businesses Integrating Sustainability into their Operations
As to Rautenbach, K. (2024). Adopting to sustainable practices, your business
can not only contribute to a better environment but also benefit from increased
efficiency, cost savings, and enhanced reputation. Just like how the Apple company
planned to focus on using recycled and renewable materials, low-carbon shipping,
reducing energy consumption and bringing their net emission to zero. This
sustainability commitment adds services and solution that supports a much more
sustainable business.
Successful Examples of Sustainable Development Projects or Initiatives
According to Carolina Milanesi (2023), Apple put sustainability at the center of
its Fall iPhone and Apple Watch event. It did so as it put sustainability into context by
showing that you can do what I've been advocating for a long time: doing good and
doing well from a business perspective. Example is Apple’s first carbon-neutral
products is a milestone in a journey initiated over a decade ago, involving substantial
innovation and efforts throughout its global supply chain. And also, they are planning
to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2030.
Sustainable Development Intersects with issues like Poverty Alleviation and
Social Justice
Sustainable development intersects with issues like poverty alleviation and
social justice in several ways. Poverty is not just a lack of income, but also a
deprivation of basic capabilities and freedoms. Apple, as a global leader in the tech
industry, has a critical role to play in promoting sustainable development and
addressing social justice concerns. Additionally, Apple's education initiatives, such
as its Apple Developer Academy, provide opportunities for individuals from
underrepresented communities to develop skills and access better economic
opportunities (Sen, 2006).
Economic Implications of Transitioning to a more Sustainable Model of
Development?
The economic implications of transitioning to a more sustainable model of
development are significant. According to Banerjee and Khan (2024), by enhancing
greenery and promoting eco-friendly practices, apple cultivation symbolizes a
broader environmental commitment. The economic analysis of apples involves
examining their market price and revenue generation, showcasing the
interconnectedness of different disciplines. Moreover, Stern (2007) added that the
economic benefits of transitioning to a low-carbon economy far outweigh the costs of
inaction.
