Preface

This account is completely autobiographical and entirely

factual within the limitation of memory, though written from the level
of long-held images, vivid impressions, and feelings. I attempted to
show the love of a boy and a girl and how it grew to maturity, the
struggle for growth in religious faith, the struggle to separate child-
hood fantasies of war from the reality of war, and the struggle to relate
to older men.
Above all, my main purpose was to show not just the events, but
rather the feelings that were precipitated and conveyed by the events.
I believe the emotions and their aftermath expressed in this writing are
representative of those experienced by thousands of young infantry-
men in World War II.
The History of the 94th Infantry Division in World War II, published in
1948, and the History of the 376th Infantry Regiment between the Years of
1921–1945, published in December 1945, were very useful in helping
me to recall and describe the overall picture during the war.
I am indebted to the Library of Congress for information concern-
ing eighteen-year-old replacements, found in the volume U.S. Army in
World War II—the Army Ground Forces: The Procurement and Training of
Ground Combat Troops by Palmer, Wiley and Keast.

Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I would give thanks to God for the inner
strength and support over the three-decade-long attempt to properly
present my story.
My wife, Mary Jo, was the love of my life and a source of over-
whelming support during the war years, as she has continued to be
through sixty-one years of marriage that have brought us two chil-
dren, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. In my inter-
mittent attempts during the last thirty years to attain publication,
Mary Jo was both typist and chief spelling editor. Additional stars may
be added to her crown because, by her own admission, she felt that our
efforts to see my manuscript in print would be fruitless, judging from
our experiences with publishers who seemed to want bigger-than-
life–hero stories.
The love and support that my parents expressed in their letters to
me is beyond measure. I’m sure that their fears and concerns were
heightened by the fact that I was their only child. I was blessed to see
my father live until he was almost eighty-six and my mother until she
was ninety-four.
The technical side of getting the final manuscript ready for publica-
tion became a family affair, and we are deeply grateful to our daugh-
ter, Cheryl Long, for setting up our computer according to the required
guidelines. Our oldest grandson, Rob Kingsbury, was a major player
at a critical point in our computer illiteracy; he put the manuscript and
