FOREWORD
Kai Cheng Thom

As I write this foreword in March of 2020, the novel coronavirus,

COVID-19, is overturning our world: Socioeconomic, political, and
healthcare systems across the globe are in crisis as they struggle to
adapt to the pandemic. Among the most heavily impacted by the
upheaval are traditionally marginalized communities, including the
trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, and other gender-variant people
whom this book seeks to empower.
Already at risk of reduced access to the social determinants of
health, such as stable housing, income, and social support, trans
communities will likely feel the reverberations of this crisis for years
to come—particularly the disproportionate number of us who are
chronically ill, disabled, racialized, and survival sex workers.
Yet if there is anything I know to be true about trans people—
vulnerable, fractious, politically divided as we can be (I write this
with the exasperated affection of a woman who has spent her whole
adult life living and working in trans social services)—it is that we
possess the capacity to unite, care for one another, and grow in the
midst of struggle. For this is what we have always done, for
generations upon generations, stretching back to the beginning of
European colonization—and in many places, further back still: We
have lived and loved each other in a world that was not made for us
to survive in.

***

I came out to myself as a trans girl about a decade and a half ago,
when I was fourteen. The sheltered child of a Chinese migrant family
in Vancouver’s East Side (the poor part of town, but not the really
poor part was how we thought of it), I had no language or concept
for what I was except the meagre resources I could find on the pre-
social media era of the Internet.
Like many trans youth of color, I was isolated, ostracized at
school, a survivor of physical and sexual abuse, and deeply
traumatized. Queer and trans community saved my life—not the
teachers at school who were either too timid or bigoted to stand up
for me, not the doctors or counselors who diagnosed and
pathologized me. Peer outreach workers, community organizers,
activists, and sex workers were the people who found me, saw me,
and gave me the words to name what I was and demand what I
needed.
Trans community also gave me vision—made me start thinking
about a society that people like me, everybody, could belong in. A
society where I wasn’t stared at or threatened in public, where my
friends didn’t always seem to be in danger. And trans community
gave me history and possibility: The legacy of radical trans activists
like Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, who started the Street
Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) House for runaway queer
kids.
In this book, you will find such powerful words, vision, history, and
possibility. The first edition of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves was a
groundbreaking work that sought to place the ownership of
knowledge about trans bodies and culture directly in the hands of
trans people and our allies. This was—and still is—a radical project,
for within the dominant colonial, cisnormative culture, trans people
have long been reduced to the product of mental illness or sexual
fetish, specimens to be studied and cured (if not outright reviled and
shunned). Psychiatrists, psychologists, and other “experts” have
attempted to define who we are and gatekeep our access to legal
and medical transition.
Trans Bodies, Trans Selves stands within the activist lineage that
dares to recognize the rich depth and brilliance of our culture, to
imagine that trans people are the rightful experts in our own
identities, bodies, and experiences. The second edition of the book,
which you are currently reading, has been expanded and updated so
as to be even more inclusive of the vast diversity of perspectives
that make up our communities.

***

In the years since I first came out as an adolescent, I have spent my

whole professional lifetime working with and for trans people. I’ve
been a peer educator, sex worker, queer event planner, author,
speaker, arts facilitator, and (former) clinical social worker and family
therapist, to name just a few jobs I’ve had. In each role, I
specialized in working with trans people—an experience I consider
both an immense privilege and an intense, at times overwhelming,
responsibility. Through it all, I have come to believe that while trans
people are just as human as anyone else (what a concept!), we also
have unique gifts to offer one another and broader society.
It is often said in the field of transgender health that there is “no
one way to be trans,” and this is true. Any sweeping generalization
about trans people is likely to ring false for at least some segment of
our community. Yet it is also true that the oppression and
discrimination leveled toward us have the effect of pushing us
toward the extremes of the human condition: Trans people know
trauma. We know pain. We know survival. We know connection,
care, loss, and betrayal. We know joy.
I have supported trans individuals in courtrooms where the
presiding legal officials refused to recognize their chosen names and
pronouns—their basic humanity. I have sat with countless trans
therapy clients as they wept, broken-hearted over a world that didn’t
seem to want them, and expressed self-harmful or suicidal intent.
I’ve worked through endless trans community conflicts over intimate
partner violence, assault, and abuse. I’ve tried to look up old sex
worker friends from adolescence only to find them gone from this
world, murdered in their own homes.
And I have also watched trans friends dance with gorgeous
abandon, voguing like legends from a mythical world. I’ve seen my
communities rally around trans siblings in crisis, struggling with
psychosis or chronic illness. I’ve been transported and transformed
by trans art, theater, literature, and innovation. I’ve been humbled
and inspired by the scope of trans scholarship, community
organizing, and institution-building. No one knows how to survive
like trans people. No one knows how to thrive like trans people.

***

Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is a vast wealth of scientific, cultural, and

historic knowledge. The material here spans a dizzying array of
medical facts, lived experiences, and opinions. Yet each one is, in its
way, a testimony to the strength and beauty of who we are—our
refusal to disappear and our commitment to life.
If you are reading this book as an ally, I urge you to acknowledge
our resilience and self-determination, that you might work with us as
partners rather than would-be saviors. And if you are reading it as a
trans or gender-questioning person, then I remind you of the legacy
of dreamers, fighters, creators, and change-makers that stands
behind us. No matter where you come from, or what you believe
about being trans, no matter what challenges you face, know that
you are a vital part of something bigger.
The second edition of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is a book that
will come out into a tempestuous world, full of uncertainty and
change. But then, trans people have been coming out into just such
a world for as long as I can remember. And if there is anything I
have learned from trans community, it is that change comes with the
potential for growth as well as loss. In the midst of the crisis, we
discover who we are—our courage, our will to live, the hope that
gives birth to whole new ways of living and being with one another.
I write this to the future of trans community: You hold a map to
transformation in your hands. It is a map of where we have been,
and where we might go. It is a map to remaking yourself, yes, but
also remaking our world. And together, I do believe that we might
make a world where all of us—everyone—can finally belong.
