 Editors’ Note

Every day in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, among the coral,
fish, and seaweed on the ocean floor, nestles the tifa (oyster). Its
shell sometimes opens, and it feeds by filtering plankton and nu-
trients from the warm currents as they pass through its flesh.

Occasionally a parasitic organism, a biological intruder, will
drill through the oyster’s shell, and in defense the oyster will
form a protective barrier, or mantle, around it. Over the course
of years, a mantle of nacre forms, layer by layer, around the ir-
ritating intruder. The end product radiates an array of various
colors—from shades of blue and purple to tints of platinum and
green. This is the rare and precious gem, the “pearl of great
price,” the Pacific black pearl, or penina uliuli.

This book is named after that pearl. It started with an idea, a
need to produce a resource by Pasifika for Pasifika, about treat-
ments, conditions, issues, protocols, and processes faced by Pa-
cific peoples. From that nucleus, this resource grew, layer by
layer, as more mental health professionals, researchers, prac-
titioners, counselors, psychotherapists, and community work-
ers joined in. The end result is a precious, rare, and colorful
resource, radiating the unique and indigenous shades of the
Pacific.
 Introduction
On Building a Fale

On a sunny Auckland spring day in October 2003, Margaret Agee and

Philip Culbertson, faculty members at the University of Auckland, were
enjoying a collegial cup of coffee. Philip had just received notice that his
1997 book, Counselling Issues and South Pacific Communities, was going out
of print, and the two were sharing their frustration at how difficult it is to
locate the formally and informally published work of Pasifika colleagues
in the field of counseling. This lack serves as the primary impediment to
the dissemination and advancement of multicultural theories and creative
developments in practice in the mental health field throughout the Pacific
and internationally.
Eventually they began to dream of facilitating a new edited collection,
designed to serve both the training and ongoing professional development
needs of mental health professionals, to increase their skills in addressing
mental health issues particular to indigenous Pasifika peoples. Philip and
Margaret realized that they needed a Pasifika person on the editorial team,
and so invited Cabrini Makasiale, a Fijian-born Tongan psychotherapist, to
serve as the advisory co-editor. In March 2004, the three co-editors began
to approach mental health professionals in Auckland about contributing to
such a book. The response was immediate and enthusiastic.

The Birth of a New Community

A letter of invitation was sent to a list of Pasifika mental health workers,
inviting them to a breakfast to learn about the project. The co-editors’
dream was a book in which mental health workers indigenous to the Pa-
cific would take creative ownership of the contents, while the co-editors
would provide the tools and machinery to get this collection into print. In
this way, the co-editors hoped that a purer Pasifika voice could emerge,
without the taint of further colonization by the pālagi West. We believe
that in this collection, the voices of indigenous writers can be heard speak-
ing for themselves, in their own way.
The initial breakfast meeting in late June was attended by eight Samoan
and Tongan women, in addition to the co-editors. The group was wel-
comed and the food blessed by the Rev. Dr. Winston Halapua, a Tongan
