Introduction for Reciter, Rhodes Piano and Synthesizer

Intr-o seara de de decembrie, m-am asezat la masa de lucru si,


cu emotie, am desfacut plicul in care adusesem, in toamna anului
1930, cateva relicve: biletele pe care mi le trimisese Maitreyi,
dupa ce nu ne-am mai putut vedea, scrisorile lui Dasgupta,
o fotografie veche, cateva flori uscate, o suvita de par.
Apoi am inceput sa recitesc jurnalul acelor ani, chiar si paginile
pe care nu indraznisem niciodata pana atunci sa le recitesc.

Imi amintesc foarte vag cind i-am fost prezentat i-am vazut deodata
bratul intreg gol si m-a lovit culoarea pielii: mata, bruna, de un brun
nemaiintalnit pina atunci, s-ar fi spus de lut si de ceara.
Maitreyi mi s-a parut, atunci, mult mai frumoasa, in sari de
culoarea ceaiului palid, cu papuci albi cusuti in argint,
cu salul asemenea cireselor galbene, si buclele ei prea negre, |
ochii ei prea mari, buzele ei prea rosii creau parca o viata
mai putin umana in acest trup infasurat si totusi transparent,
care traia, s-ar fi spus, prin mira nu prin biologie. O priveam
cu oarecare curiozitate, caci nu izbuteam sa inteleg ce taina
ascunde faptura aceasta in miscarile ei moi, de matase, in
zimbetul timid, preliminar de panica, si mai ales in glasul ei
atit de schimbat in fiecare clipa, un glas care parca ar fi
descoperit atunci anumite sunete.

Beatitude Waltz for Soprano, Reciter, Piano and Synthesizer

Nu are o frumusete regulata, ci dincolo de canoane, expresiva


pina la razvratire, fermecatoare in sensul magic al cuvintului.
…Ne priveam fix, fermecati, stapiniti de acelasi fluid suprafiresc
de dulce, incapabil sa ne impotrivim, sa ne scuturam de farmec,
desteptindu-ne. Mi-e greu sa descriu emotia. O fericire calma si
in acelasi timp violenta, in fata careia sufletul nu opunea nici o
rezistenta; o beatitudine a simturilor care depasea senzualitatea,
ca si cum ar fi participat la o fericire cereasca, la o stare de har.
La inceput, starea se sustinea numai prin priviri. Apoi am inceput
sa ne atingem miinile, fara a ne desparti totusi ochii.

Motto:
"Traditia indiana configureaza inca din cele mai vechi texte (bunaoara, Atharva Veda II, 7, 3; X, 7, 38; etc.)
Cosmosul ca un arbore urias. In Upanishade intalnim precizata dialectic aceasta conceptie:
Universul este un "arbore rasturenat" avandu-si radacina in cer si ramurile intinse deasupre intregului pamant,"

Am iubit intii un pom, din aceia pe care noi ii numim "sapte frunze". se pregati ea sa povesteasca.
Sedeam pe atunci in Alipore, si acolo erau arbori multi si voinici, si eu m-am indragostit de unul inalt
si mindru, dar atit de gingas, atit de mingiietor Nu mai ma puteam desparti de el. Stam ziua intreaga
imbratisati, si-i vorbeam, il sarutam, plingeam. Ii faceam versuri, fara sa le scriu, i le spuneam numai lui;
cine altul m-ar fi inteles? Si cind ma mingiia el, cu frunzele pe obraz, simteam o fericire atit de dulce,
incit imi pierdeam rasuflarea. Ma rezemam de trunchiul lui, ca sa nu cad. Fugeam noaptea din odaie,
goala, si ma urcam in pomul meu; nu puteam dormi singura. Plingeam sus, intre frunze, pina ce se
apropia ziua, si incepeam sa tremur. O data era sa ma prinda mama, si am tras o spaima de am ramas
multe zile in pat. De atunci m-am imbolnavit eu de inima. Si nu puteam sta in pat daca nu mi se aduceau
in fiecare zi ramuri proaspete din pomul meu cu "sapte frunze"...

Daca as fi primit, cum ma rog lui Dumnezeu sa fiu,


intr-o familie indiana, as gasi puteri sa-mi refac viata
aceasta cladita pe nimicuri, pe interese stupide
si pe abstractiuni. As vrea s-o iau de la capat,
sa cred in ceva. sa fiu fericit...Pentru mine, crestinismul
nu s-a nascut inca. N-au fost decit biserici crestine,
dogme si rituale. Crestinismul se naste aici, in India,
pe pamintul cel mai impacat cu Dumnezeu,
unde oamenii sunt insetati de iubire, de libertate
si de intelegere. Nu concep un crestinism fara libertate
si fara primatul spiritualitatii...

Ma leg pe tine, pamintule, ca eu voi fi a lui Allan, si a nimanui
altuia. Voi creste din el ca iarba din tine. Si cum astepti tu ploaia,
asa ii voi astepta eu venirea, si cum iti sunt tie razele, asa va fi trupul
lui mie. Ma leg in fata ta ca unirea noastra va rodi, caci mi-e drag cu
voia mea, si tot raul, daca va fi, sa nu cada asupra lui, ci asupra-mi,
caci eu l-am ales. Tu ma auzi, mama pamint, tu nu ma minti, maica
mea. Daca ma simti aproape, cum te simt eu acum, si cu mina si cu
inelul, intareste-ma sa-l iubesc totdeauna, bucurie necunoscuta lui
sa-i aduc, viata de rod si de joc sa-i dau. Sa fie viata noastra ca
bucuria ierburilor ce cresc din tine. Sa fie imbratisarea noastra ca
cea dintii zi a monsoon-ului.

RECITATION II:
Ploaie sa fie sarutul nostru. Si cum tu niciodata nu obosesti, maica
mea, tot astfel sa nu oboseasca inima mea in dragostea pentru Allan,
pe care cerul l-a nascut departe, si tu, maica, mi l-ai adus aproape.

Himalaya - for Reciter and Tape

Petreceam tot timpul in padure, caci vecinatatile Almorii


cuprind cele mai frumoase paduri de pin pe care le are Himalaya,
si le cutreieram in lung si in lat, reluind necontenit acelasi film interior
al dragostei mele cu Maitreyi, inchipuind fel de fel de intimplari,
unele mai fantastice decit altele, prin care noi doi ajungeam fericiti,
intilnindu-ne intr-o singuratate nepatrunsa de nimeni sau in acea cetate
moarta de la Fatehpur-Sikhri, sau in vreo coliba parasita din jungla.
Asistam ziua intreaga la desfasurarea aceluiasi vis fantastic, care ne izola
pe noi doi, pe mine si pe Maitreyi, de cealalta lume.

Maitreyi Forever for Soprano, Reciter and Tape

Oriunde ma duceam, o intilneam pe ea, printre pini si mesteceni,


pe stinci, pe drumuri. Atit de mult traiam cu povestea aceasta minunata,
incit orice chemare din afara ma inspaiminta, aproape ma facea sa sufar fizic.
Stiam ca si Maitreyi, acolo, in celula ei din Bhowanipore, se gindeste tot atit
de adinc la mine, la viata noastra impreuna, si comuniunea aceasta in inchipuire
ne lega parca pe deasupra evenimentelor, ne lega in ciuda despartirii si a mortii.
Cind era luna, treceam prin padure, pina la piriul din vale, si intirziam mult
pe o stinca, privind apa, strigind: "Maitreyi! Maitreyi!" pina ce oboseam
si imi auzeam glasul tot mai stins, aproape o soapta…
