B.Tech. First Assessment January 2018
Sixth Semester
Electronics and Communication Engineering
15ECE312 Digital Communication
Time: Two hours Maximum: 50 Marks
Instructions
1. Answer ALL the questions.
2. Numerical should be associated with the formulae required.
3. Sketch diagrams wherever required
1 A band pass signal g(t) with a spectrum shown in Fig.1 is ideally sampled. Sketch the
spectrum of the sampled signals at sampling frequencies f = 25, 45 and 50 Hz respectively.
Indicate if and how the signal can be recovered in all the three cases. (9 marks)

2 The signal g(t) = 2cos(2000πt) – 4sin(4000πt) is quantized by rounding off using a 12-bit
quantizer. Find the MSE and the quantization SNR. (8 marks)
3 The bandwidth of signal input to the PCM is restricted to 4 Khz. The input varies from -
3.8volts to +3.8volts and has the average power of 30mW. The required signal to noise
ratio is 20 dB. The modulator produces binary output. Assume uniform quantization.
a. Calculate the number of bits required per sample.
b. What is the bit rate.
c. Output of 30 such PCM coders is time multiplexed. What is the minimum required
transmission bandwidth for the transmission of multiplexed signal. (8 marks)
4 A signal g(t) = 10cos(20πt)cos(200πt) is sampled at the rate of 250 samples/sec.
a. Sketch the spectrum of the signal.
b. Draw the spectrum of the sampled signal and specify the cutoff frequency of ideal
reconstruction filter so as to recover g(t) from the sampled signal.
c. Specify the Nyquist rate for the signal g(t). (6 marks)

5 What is the resulting SQNR for a signal uniformly distributed on [-2, +2], when uniform
PCM with 256 levels is employed. (4 marks)

6 Briefly explain the operation of differential pulse code modulation system (8 marks)

7 A delta modulator system is designed to operate at frequency fs=30kHz. Determine the

maximum amplitude of a 2kHz input sinusoid for which the delta modulator does not have
slope over load distortion. Quantization step size is 𝛿 =250mv (7 marks)
