PROJECT ASSIGNMENT – AN AMUSEMENT PARK RIDE FOR TWO

This is the main project for this subject. The project report is divided into Assignments 2 & 3. The amusement
park ride prototype, including interactive oral assessment and disassembly, is Assignment 4. The goal of this
project is to learn the engineering design process and some engineering design methods as well as learn to
design and select basic machine elements and apply knowledge of basic mechatronic elements.

This set of three assignments contributes towards all subject learning outcomes:

LO1. Describe engineering design methods that can assist the creation of mechanical systems and artefacts.
LO2. Construct well-reasoned engineering requirements for a given problem or need.
LO3. Apply the key concepts in designing and selecting basic machine elements.
LO4. Apply the key concepts in the integration of motors, sensors and independent control to achieve
autonomous mechanical / physical systems.
LO5. Manage relatively complex engineering design projects.

This assignment is done in teams. Instructors assign the teams.

Assignment 2 is the conceptual design report.

Assignment 3 is the complete project report.

Assignment 4 comprises (a) the amusement park ride prototype (showcase), (b) the interactive oral assessment and (c) the disassembly.
The deadline of each assignment is on Canvas.

The Project
Imagine that a city council wants to develop an amusement park to amuse city dwellers and attract visitors! Your team is hired to design a safe, but entertaining,
amusement park ride for two Lego figurines. It is designed to let you apply the lessons learned in class. This is best done by adapting one of the mechanisms you learn
in class and using the covered machine elements to translate the rotational motion from a motor to the movement of the ride. In real life, most rides rely on hydraulics
due to the heavy loads, but ours will be powered by a laptop or a DC power supply and rely on mechanical transfer of motion from the motor. As in real life, the ride
needs to be safe, and it will thus have two independent electronic safety features built in. This will be a chance to incorporate electronics in your projects. Given Lego
figurines are not skilled at operating a ride on their own, you will need to make your ride semi-autonomous – at the least. Have fun with it! At the end of the project,
you will take part in a showcase where we all get to see the full amusement park with all the rides in action. Note that this project is updated every semester, use this
guide, not one from any past semester.

Materials & components

We encourage maximum reuse in this project and as part of learning to be a good engineer. We have many motors left over from last years, so please use them. You
will also get partially used electronic components for the mechatronics lessons. Use those again in the project. We also have leftover materials and other components
from last year that you will have access to. You will also need other materials, always start by asking if you could reuse something. If you need to use material (e.g.
machine a part), figure out if the workshop has an off cut and use that instead of brand-new stock. You can talk to the people at TCS for further advice, we are all
aiming to reuse and recycle as much we can. You can also reuse your personal items.

Start by having a look at our component and material Inventory (See LMS). It lists all the components and materials available to you as well as their Environmental
Impact (EI).

Generally, if you compare the EI of the different components and materials, one can observe that the electronics drive the EI more than the materials. From the past
semester, we also know that both large number of small components (such as fasteners) OR large individual parts contribute significantly to the projects EI. Therefore,
we have drafted the following five further guidelines to help you reduce the environmental impact of your machines.

1. Electrical components have a major impact on your resulting EI. Start by thinking how to achieve your aim with low impact components (e.g., low torque
motor + gearbox = high torque motor).
2. Avoid redundancies and doublings. Consider distributing force from a single motor using e.g., a drive train. Consider powering all electrical components from
a single source.
3. Try reducing the quantity of your smallest components. Try reducing the size of your largest components.
4. Avoid metal fasteners by using e.g., dovetail joints.
5. Increase the stiffness of MDF and Acrylic by using e.g., cross struts. Avoid 6mm sheets.

If you reuse, with no or minimal further processing, a component made by someone else in a past semester, etc., you can count the EI of that as zero. Allowed
processing would include e.g. resizing a hole but not using the part as a larger piece to make a different component. The benefit is offcut use, which is still preferred
to using new materials (although EI is the same).

General tips

® The project will take more time than you think. Even if you take this into the account. Therefore, plan your machine features and functionality sequentially or
hierarchically so that you start with only one key functionality. Once that is finished, you can challenge yourself to do more. If you start too ambitious, you will
end up with a great plan, but no machine and you would fail the class. If you start simple, you will learn more since you will have time get to the end of the design
process as well.
® If you are tight on time, emphasize the machine aspects of your device over the aesthetics of the ride.
® Build and test small portions at a time rather than designing the full machine at the end. For example, to eventually create motion, learn Arduino just to spin
your motor before creating the more complex motion; to figure out any mechanism, design it first before integrating it into the rest of it; for sensors, learn to
use your desired input (or output) first before merging them. If you can simulate it, do so. If not, try a simpler version. For example, popsicle sticks are wonderful
rigid members that can be used to figure out mechanisms, thick cardboard can work as well.
® Build quickly at least one part of your machine from any material available to you (cardboard from recycling?). This will help you with the scale & sizing. It is
common to build things much too small or large if only drawing them in SolidWorks and never in real life.
® Do ballpark estimates early for the power you have available and what is needed for your machine to work. How much will it weigh, how much of that weight
does it need to lift/move? Remember your power limit in requirements!
® Keep it small. If it is small, you can easily bring it to class, to TCS, work on it at home, etc. Smaller also uses less power & material and has lower EI.
® Go ahead and look at what other teams are doing. Share ideas, issues, solutions etc. Just make sure that each team has a unique design.
® Sometimes you might be stuck on how to solve something about the idea you selected. If you are stuck long or if it seems very complicated after getting advice
on it, think if you are only solving a problem that you created, could you change your mechanism or what it does to eliminate your problem in the first place.
® Involve your team. It is not about who already knows how to do something, but about all of you learning to do something new.
® Teamwork is not graded, report any team issues early, so we can handle them in time professionally. There is no punishment of any kind for having team
problems, but if you do not deal with them, your project and you will suffer.
® Google what the KISS design principle means, and follow it.

Assignment 2 – Conceptual design

Your final project report is made up by two assignments – Assignment 2 and Assignment 3. You will submit part of Assignment 2 again as part of the complete report
in Assignment 3. Make sure you create this report with that in mind. Follow the required sections below.

Required sections:

Introduction (1/2-page max)

Describe what this report is about. A short paragraph to people outside this class. Give context to what the assignment is and what the reader is to expect.

Project Requirements (max 1 page)

Include the given project requirements and the four you defined yourself. Divide the requirements into must haves and nice to haves to reflect and plan to prioritize
some over others. You should have performance and quality requirements (see Table 5.2. in Dieter & Schmidt) as well as project requirements such as
“prototypability” (=manufacturability but only for your one machine for the showcase later), disassembly (reuse), environmental impact of building materials and
electronic components & schedule. Include a target metric for each requirement, i.e., what do you define to be a success for your project during this semester.
Ensure it is measurable and does not require destroying your machine.

Concept development (no page limit, but conciseness rewarded)

Summarize your ideation process and methods used. Show some of your top ideas and the variety of your different ideas about how to realize your machine.
Ensure you have generated a reasonable number of ideas for your machine. It should be several ideas for one type of machine and several different machine types.
Ensure the ideation is focused on the how to create the motion, as well as which ride you will make. Ensure you practice creativity as discussed in class. Do not
redraw your ideas for the report, simply record your process. If your process included lot of ideas, show that (e.g. a picture of the table you have all your ideas on,
or a screen capture of the board your ideas were recorded on) to help show evidence of creativity. Use any well documented existing method for ideation and
report it. It can be ones covered in class, or something else, if it is an actual established creativity method.
Report in detail about your concept selection and justify your selected concept. Use a concept selection matrix (Pugh Chart) for concept selection. The concept
should cover the machine aspect of your ride, how will it work, and how you plan to design it to meet the requirements. You should sketch the concepts you
compare in enough detail so a reader can understand how they work and how you have scored them. Your selected concept should be clearly shown in a sketch
and a description.
Estimate the power requirement for your selected concept based on its mechanical motion. Discuss briefly how material selection and all machine elements
(those that are covered in class before the report is due which may include mechanisms, material selection, gears, shafts and bearings (if used)) relates to your
project. What do you need to do (learn, calculate etc.) in terms of each relevant elements to be successful in your project? Use the lecture materials to understand
what type of information is needed for the calculations and discuss what you need to do to have that information. Show the equations you will need to use later

when designing, choosing and sizing the machine elements. For material selection, take the real-life constraint of needing to use materials available at TCS into
the account and apply the material selection concepts learned in class given that you are limited to those materials.
First build (max 2 pages)

Physically build any one of your planned parts for your chosen concept. Any one gear, shaft, linkage, any one item. Include a photo of it in the report as well as a
dimensioned drawing (2D) of it. The drawing should use a professional template, have an isometric view and only the necessary projections in that one drawing. It
should be fully, but not over dimensioned. Remember the decimal points in the dimension imply tolerance, so think how many you wish to show.

Project management (max 1 page)

Risk Management - Identify the two most risky issues that you might face during your project and how you plan to mitigate against those risks. Include the likelihood
and severity of each risk. One paragraph per risk. Focus on project risks during the project to help you plan for those. Normally, one of the risks is at least in part
about team risks.

Contribution ledger - Include a table where each member signs off on the contribution made by each member. Only include the name and only sign off if the respective
team member truly did the contribution listed. It is academic misconduct to misrepresent who did what or sign on someone else’s behalf.

Assignments 2-4

Semester 2, 2025

For assignment 2, an excellent report is

ü Fluent and easy to understand, free of errors and uses professional language and style. It has all the required parts. (Report quality: 10%)
ü Content wise, it appears that the concept of requirements is understood – including that the requirements are not biased towards the team’s design. There are
4 relevant well-defined requirements with clearly verifiable target metrics in addition to the given requirements. The target metrics reflect ambitious, but feasible
level of future machine performance. The requirements are logically prioritized and there is a well-chosen mix of relevant different types of performance and
quality metrics as well as project requirements. (Requirements: 15%)
ü It is evident that at least one established formally documented creativity method has been correctly used, its use is well reported, and the resulting concepts
reflect creativity in terms of the number, uniqueness and variety of concepts generated. The ideation is focused on how to realise the chosen ride (e.g. different
means of how to create the motion of a carousel horse), or ride options (e.g., how to create an up and down moving horse in a carousel, how to create semi-
autonomous bumper cars, how could one make a car go up in a roller coaster etc.), more than overall aspects such as which ride to make. (Concept generation:
15%)
ü The concepts chosen for the evaluation are complete including details on how the desired motion is achieved and it is clear what the intended mechanism is.
Clear visualizations of the evaluated concepts are present. Pugh chart is used professionally. The selection criteria are relevant and relate well to the requirements
and other team goals. Reducing environmental impact is used as part of decision making. The process is iterated at least once to improve the selected concept
as covered in class. The assessment is logical, easy to follow and seems free of biases. (Concept evaluation and selection: 15%)
ü The report addresses the relevant material selection and mechanical machine element related issues they might face in the project given their chosen project.
The work shows understanding of relevant class materials, i.e. what calculations will be needed to make design decisions and what information is needed for
those. Reducing environmental impact is a key decision factor also here. The discussion and expected issues reflect knowledgeability of what information the
students need to find out or what machine element related calculations or estimates they need to do in their project. Initial mechanical power
estimate/calculation is presented, and it is within the required limit. No machine element calculations are expected in this assignment but show the relevant
equations in the context where you will need to use them. (Material selection + mechanical machine elements: 20%)
ü One part clearly meant for the chosen concept is made (as shown in a picture), a professional 2D appropriately dimensioned drawing is present (dimensions only,
no tolerances). The Drawing should use professional template, have an isometric view and only the necessary projections in that one drawing. It should be fully,
but not over dimensioned. There is a couple of sentence description of the part and why it was made the way it was made. (First build: 15%)
ü In the project management section, two (and only two) relevant genuine project risks that could happen during the project are identified and a reasonable
detailed plan is presented to mitigate the risks. Responsibilities reflect both individual and team work as relevant. The team contribution table has reasonable
detail and is signed. (Project management: 10%)
ü Report is all the team’s own work, without plagiarism or undocumented AI use. Statement about AI use has been made by the team in the report. If the marker
suspects undocumented AI use or other form of plagiarism, the team’s mark for the report may be multiplied by a number between zero and one, depending on
the severity. In addition, the team member(s) implicated may be subject to further academic honesty processes and consequences.

Assignment 3 – Project report

Submit the entire complete report for Assignment 3.

Required sections:

Introduction (max 1/2 page)

Describe what this report is about. A short paragraph to people outside this class. Give context to what the assignment is and what the reader is to expect. Update
this from the Assignment 2.

Project Requirements (max 2 pages)

Same as Assignment 2 but include in the table if the requirements are met, met partially or not met. Justify how you know if the requirement is met or not met,
show evidence (for example for the weight, report exact weight(s) and at least one image of it on a scale, or if based on calculations or CAD files, show it). For the
power requirement you could show evidence (e.g., a photo) that the ride operates with the motor provided while showing the current and voltage during
operation. Show this so the reader can easily see both the requirement and how it is or is not met without needing to refer to an earlier page. For example, add a
column to your requirements table rather than show two separate tables. If items such as photographs are too long to fit in this section they can be put in an
appendix and cross referenced.

You do not update your requirements from Assignment 2, unless you performed poorly (e.g. had non-verifiable requirements). The assessment this time will
focus on your ability to design towards requirements.

Concept development (no page limit, but conciseness rewarded)

Include your concept generation & selection from the previous report. No need to update unless there has been a change of concept. It may be sensible to conclude
the concept generation section with the sketch(es) that you completed at the time of concept generation – it is often useful to be able to compare your final ride
with these and to see the effects of the design decisions that you have taken along the way.

Update your power estimation, material selection and machine element parts to include your actual design decisions and estimations or calculations you made as
part of your design. Apply the knowledge from the mechanical design lectures here (e.g. for a gear, did you design it for space, strength or something else and
how did you decide and calculate the gear ratio you need?). Present and justify your mechatronic elements (motor, sensors, etc) selection and the code you use.
You may use the code libraries or code you find, but you must cite what you use. You may also use generative AI to generate your code, but you must comply with
the university policy and include all prompts used etc. Explain the influence environmental impact considerations had on your design and material selection.
Include an environmental impact table showing calculation of overall EI for your ride. For items or materials not new from TCS, include a note on the source and
whether recycled or new. If new, estimate an EI value in consultation with staff – if truly recycled, per above, the EI is zero. Think about what advantages the
electronic components and building materials bring, and how that compares to their Environmental Impact. Reflect on what level of environmental impact is

reasonable. Zero impact would mean there is no machine, and you are to work with the components and materials given to you, given these constraints, what is
a reasonably low impact for the performance/functionality needed from the ride?

Walk the reader through any other design decisions made, including safety decisions for the (human) user or the (Lego) rider. This includes the results of any
partial prototype tests or tests to meet the requirements you set. Include also tests that failed. They only fail, if one does not learn from them, so record the failure
and learnings.

Final Design (max 12 pages)

Introduce your ride and its functionality using professional engineering documentation. Show an isometric view plus an exploded view with parts list. Include
dimensioned drawings for 5 parts you made (ensure the 5 parts are all different so you can showcase your ability to dimension different types of part, no need to
dimension organic shapes (such as the shape of a horse). Notice you will need a drawing (non-dimensioned) of all parts and a place holder (approximate shape)
for the electronics for your exploded view. Show the wiring diagram and a screen capture from TinkerCAD of your circuit, and code logic as a flow chart and include
the Arduino code used in the Appendix. The goal is to document the design so that another engineer could build it as well. Remember to cite the Arduino libraries
or sites where you got your code.

Also include photographs of any parts of your ride that you have had time to build, and the final ride if completed. They are not graded in any way, but given the
showcase is a few days after the deadline, all should have something done and we are of course curious!

Project management (max 2 pages)

Risks – Discuss the expected (from assignment 2) and unexpected risks you faced during the project and how you handled them. What would you do the same and
what differently next time? One paragraph per risk is enough.

Contribution ledger - Include a table where each member signs off on the contribution made by each member. Only include the name and only sign off if the team
member is question truly did the contribution listed. It is academic misconduct to misrepresent who did what or sign on someone else’s behalf.

Own Work Statement – Include a statement from the team about plagiarism and the use of AI tools in preparing the report. The statement should say that either no
AI tools have been used in preparation of the report and the report is all the team’s own work, OR list specific sections where AI tools have been used together
with full details of the tools and prompts used. Note that most translation tools and grammar tools such as Grammarly are AI tools. Before using an AI tool without

For Assignment 3, the project report, an excellent report is:

ü Fluent and easy to understand, it is free of errors and uses professional language and style. It has all the required parts and has been updated for the final report
since Assignment 2. (Quality: 10%)
ü Previous project requirements and metrics are presented with any needed updates and whether and how the requirements are met is well reported with solid
evidence. (Requirements: 10%)
ü The previous concept development and selections sections are still present (although lengthy parts of the concept development and selection may have been
moved to an appendix, leaving a summary in the main report). Power estimation is updated to match the final design and reflects the actual power use and is used
to drive the design decisions. Relevant material selection, machine element estimations, selection and/or calculations are logically and clearly presented. The
calculations are used to justify design decisions, such as sizing, or component selection and to showcase correct and appropriate application of all mechanical and
mechatronics lessons from class. Mechatronic portion is well described, and the choices are logical given the intended safety mechanism and motion of the ride.
Safety explanations should be clear about the safety risks to human or Lego users that were identified and designed for. Design decisions are well justified and
backed up by evidence from calculations, simulation or prototyping. Reducing environmental impact and designing for disassembly are used as part of decision
making and the resulting machine has a reasonable environmental impact of both the electronic components and building materials given its level of performance
and creativity. Environmental Impact Inventory including summary of materials used in earlier tests and iterations of your design (note: TCS are noting consumables
used by each team). Learnings from failures are reported and when relevant used in design decisions. (Concept development: 35%)
ü The ride is presented in detail, and all design documentation is professional and enables another engineer to reproduce their project. All parts of the required
documentation are present: an isometric view, exploded view and related Bill of Materials (BOM), 5 unique dimensioned engineering drawings of self-made parts,
wiring diagram, TinkerCAD screen capture of the circuit, code logic & code itself (in appendix). All are done to professional standard using the appropriate
templates, symbols and conventions. (Final design: 40%)
ü The expected and unexpected risks are honestly discussed and meaningful learning from those is present. The team contribution table has reasonable detail and
is signed by all. (Project management: 5%)
ü Report is all the team’s own work, without plagiarism or undocumented AI use.

Assignment 4 – Prototype, Interactive Oral Assessment and Disassembly/preparation for re-use

This is the culmination of your project, a functioning amusement park ride for two Lego figurines, you will showcase in class as part of a joint showcase of all the
rides and demonstration of what they do. You should bring your prototype to class and be ready to showcase how it works. Bring a folded A4 paper that has a
short introduction of your machine as well as its photo in addition to the ride itself. Please list your names, student numbers and team number in the A4 sheet
and make sure your ride is identifiable by writing (permanent marker/ laser engraver) your group number on the bottom of machine. There is no need for a
separate presentation but come ready to demonstrate how your machine works.

By the stated deadline (refer to Canvas), your ride needs to be disassembled ready for re-use, the components sorted into the bins provided and the list of
components returned for re-use submitted via our questionnaire. Note that a small number of rides will be selected to be kept for posterity – in which case you
will still need to complete the disassembly / components list questionnaire.

An excellent amusement park ride for two is a machine that (italics are covered in interactive oral assessment):

Incorporates meaningful and relevant machine elements to create a meaningful amusement park motion. It uses appropriately chosen mechanisms to achieve the
desired power transfer/motion. Steady state power is within the limits. The mechanisms and the related electronics are well mounted as described in the embodiment
lecture. Team members demonstrate understanding of design, decisions and calculations. (Machine elements: 30%)

The design is unique, creative and showcases successful risk taking in its features or behaviour. (Creativity and risk taking: 20%)

Correctly reacts to one analogue and one digital signal whether tripped alone or at the same time. Team members demonstrate understanding of the sensor and
motor functions and logic. (Mechatronics: 25%)

The machine works as expected on the showcase day and works reliably and predictably several times enabling two standard Lego figurines to ride the ride.
(Functionality: 25%)

Disassembly is completed tidily by the stated deadline and all parts returned to bins (unless ride selected by staff to be kept). Disassembly questionnaire completed
and submitted by each team (Hurdle requirement).
