Safety instructions
Warning
Relying merely on this radar system for navigation is not capable of ensuring the absolute
safety of the vessel and the crew. The navigator is obligated to employ all available auxiliary
equipment to guarantee the safety of the vessel and the crew. This radar system cannot substitute
for fundamental navigation principles and common sense.
Warning
TT (Target Tracking) is the automatic tracking of targets detected by the radar automatically or
manually marked, and this radar system provides the calculated results of their heading and speed,
which can be represented in vector form. Since the data generation is based on selected radar
echoes, the radar should always be in a tuned and optimized state to ensure that the target is not

lost and to avoid detecting or tracking noise such as sea wave clutter or other unnecessary targets.
Land, island, reef, ship, rain, snow, water surface, and other surface objects can all reflect radar
waves and form radar echoes. Therefore, the radar receiver's echo signal includes various noise
signals, and the operator must adjust the RAIN (rain/snow), SEA (sea waves), and GAIN (gain)
knobs to ensure that the target is detected well and is displayed clearly on the screen.
Caution
The plotting accuracy and response of TT meet IMO standards.
TT performance is affected by the following:
Tracking accuracy is affected by course change. One to two minutes is required to restore
vectors to full accuracy after an abrupt course change. (the actual amount depends on gyrocompass
specifications.)
The amount of tracking delay is inversely proportional to the relative speed of the target. Delay
is about 15 to 30 seconds for high relative speed; 30 to 60 seconds for low relative speed.
Tracking accuracy is affected by the following:
- Echo intensity
- Radar transmission pulse width
- Radar bearing error
- Gyro compass error
- Course change (own ship and target)
The data generated by TT, AIS and video plotter are intended for reference only, refer to official
nautical charts for detailed and up-to-date information.
Note:According to IMO msc.192(79), ships with a maximum speed exceeding30 kn are typically
consided as high-speed crafts.

Function Description
Enlarge target echoes, especially small echoes. The echo stretch feature enlarges
Echo stretch targets to make them easier to see,Suppress interference, sea clutter and rain
clutter before using echo stretch, to prevent the enlargement of unwanted
echoes.
The radar samples echoes with each scan, echoes are averaged over successive
Echo averge picture frames.. Targets that show a large change with each scan are judged as
clutter and are reduced in order to display only echoes from legitimate
targets. This process requires position and speed data.
Noise reject,
Suppress white noise and increase the s/n ratio to improve picture clarity.
Interference Suppress the same frequency interference transmitted by other radars. But too
reject interferences received simultaneously from other radars to be difficult to reduce.
The wiper feature automatically changes the brilliance of weak signals to
Echo wipe facilitate picture observation, and its affect depends on the wiper setting used
and whether each averaging is turned on or off.

1 Radar operation
1.1 Power on
The radar power switch key ( ) is located below the transparent plastic protective cover on the
left upper corner of the trackball mouse keyboard (The following are all referred to as keyboard).
Open the protective cover and press the key to turn on the radar system. Press it again to turn the
power off.
After powering on, the display screen will first show the registered trademark of our company.
About 30 seconds after startup, the azimuth scale and digital timer (countdown) will be displayed,
along with related auxiliary parameters.
The digital timer will count down for 3 minutes (related to the radar's shutdown time, if the
shutdown time is short, the countdown will be shorter), the transmitter (i.e. the radar magnetron)
will be preheated during this time to prepare for transmission. When the timer counts down to
"00:00", the screen will display the words "***STAND BY***". After that, the radar can transmit
pulse microwave signals at any time. When the radar transmitter is in standby mode, the screen
will not display markers, distance rings, maps, icons, etc. At the same time, the TT and AIS
symbols will be disabled. In the preheating or standby condition, the screen will also display the
working time of the radar system and the working time of the radar transmitter.
Note 1: Avoid turning on the power immediately after turning off. Wait for a few seconds before
turning the power on again to ensure that the system starts up correctly.
Note 2: The parameters set on the radar screen through the menu, etc. will be saved to the
non-volatile memory to ensure that the parameters have been set will not be lost when restarted.
Note 3: Avoid damaging the protective cover of the power switch. It is made of hard plastic, and
any damage may injure people.
1.2Transmitter on
After power on and the magnetron has warmed up, you may transmit by pressing the <STBY
TX> key on the keyboard, or use the trackball to select the [STBY/TX] box at the bottom left
corner of the display then push the left button (beside the trackball). The text in the [STBY TX]
box will change from “STBY TX” (figure a)to “TX”(figure b)
Figure a figure b
The radar is initially set to previous settings such as : range and pulse length、 brilliance level,
VRM EBL and menu option selections.
Directly press the<STBY/TX>button or use the trackball mouse to click on the [STBY/TX]
box can toggle the radar between standby and transmit status. The antenna stops in standby status
and rotates in transmit status. The magnetron will gradually age with time, resulting in a decrease

of output power. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the radar be set to standby when not
used , so that extend its service life.
If the radar has just been used , the transmitter tube (magnetron)is turned off just now and
still warm, you can turn the radar into transmit condition without three minutes of warm-up. If the
<power> switch was turned off by mistake or tother reasons and you wish to restart the radar
promptly, turn on the <power> switch not later than 10 seconds after power-off. So that save
the prewarming time.
The operational display area is round, as showed in the figure below with gray.

1.6.2 Description of display modes
a)Head-up mode
When choosing head up mode, the [mode] box shows like below.
Mode box
In the head-up mode‘,the straight line connecting the ship and the top of the display screen
is the bow direction of the ship. the heading line points to 0 degree of bearing scale and stays
unchanged..The targets’s distances and directions are relative to own ship’s position and heading.
Usually no compass or GPS/BDS is needed in this mode.
Mode box
In this mode, the straight line connecting the ship and the top of the display screen is the
bow direction of the ship. But the directional dial rotates with the change of the bow, and the dial
corresponding to the bow line is the true orientation of the ship . 000 ° is the true north direction .
-7-
MARINE RADAR/ARPA YAR27 Series Operation Manual
This mode need to obtain the bow information of our ship from the compass.. If the gyrocompass
fails, the bearing scale returns to the state of head up mode.
c)NORTH-UP RM mode
When choosing this mode, the [MODE] box shows like below.
Mode box
In this mode, t The true north direction always coincides with the 000 mark on the azimuth
dial, and the azimuth dial remains stationary,. The heading line changes its direction according to
the ship’s heading. This mode need to obtain the bow information of our ship from the compass.
d)NORTH UP TM mode
When choosing this mode, the [MODE] box shows like below.
Mode box
In this mode, the north mark always direct to 0° of bearing scale, own ship and other moving
objects move in accordance with their true courses and speed. In ground stabilized TM, all fixed
targets, such as landmasses, appear as stationary echoes. In the sea stabilized TM without set and
drift inputs, the landmass can move on the screen. If COG (course over ground) and SOG (speed
over ground) are not available on TM mode, please enter the set tide direction and drift tide speed
manually referring to the tide table. Note that true motion is not available on 96NM range scale.
-8-
MARINE RADAR/ARPA YAR27 Series Operation Manual
In this mode, when own ship reaches a point corresponding to 75% of the radius of the
display operating area, its position will be automatically reset to 75% of the radius on the other
side in the opposite direction of the bow line. You may also reset the own ship symbol manually
by pressing the <CU/TM RESET 5> key, or left-clicking the [CU/TM RESET] box at the right
bottom of the display.
Mode box
In this mode, azimuth is display stably. The straight line connecting own ship and the top of
the screen is the heading of own. ship Targets’ distances and directions are measured relative to
the intended course, which is maintained at the 0-degree position. The bow line rotates with the
change of the bow of the ship. This mode can effectively avoid image smearing during course
change. In this mode, it is necessary to obtain the bow information of own ship from the compass.
. And it needs gyrocompass.
f) STERN UP mode

The relationship between pulse indicator, pulse width, and repetition frequency is shown in
the following table.
Pulse indication S1 S2 M1 M2 M3 L
In general, wide pulses correspond to higher radiation energy and have a longer range of action;
narrower pulses have a larger signal bandwidth and possess, better anti clutter capability and
resolution; this radar system has pre-set a suitable pulselength setting. If you are not satisfied with
the current pulselength settings ,you can changethem as below:ten.

REM ANT: A remote radar antenna transceiver , a navigation radar system is formed by
controlling the transceiver antenna of another radar, another radar of the same type needs to be
installed and connected via Ethernet cable.
In general, the radar video source should be selected as "LOC ANT" and control the
local antenna transceiver. If there is no corresponding device when selecting "Net work",
"Master", or "Rem ant", the radar echo cannot be displayed.
For ships equipped with two YAR27 series radars (X+X or X+S) with the same resolution
display radar, by selecting "Local radar" and "Remote radar" And exchanging data though
network, the inter switch display function of the dual radars can be achieved: Select the local
radar and control the local transceiver; select remote radar and operate another transceiver. If
mutual switching fails, the radar will give an alarm prompt. If mutual switching fails, the local
radar can be manually selected without affecting independent use.
1.9 Environment setting
Every time the navigation environment or task changes, you may have to readjust the radar.
In urgent or busy situations, This will only add trouble to people .. However, if you set the
optimal combination for frequently encountered navigation environments, you don't need to
change the radar settings repeatedly.
For your special navigation needs, this radar system provides multiple experience
environment settings options for you to choose. The system also provides four types user

1.41 Radar performance monitor PM
In international navigation, radar on ships larger than 300GT requires the installation of a
performance monitor (PM). The performance monitor parameters of this system are
X-band:RPM-X (9410±45 MHz). S-band:RPM-S(3050±30MHz)The performance monitor
is built into the RF transceiver base.
The radar performance monitor display is divided into reference arc (outer arc far from the
center of the circle) and measurement arc (inner arc closer to the center of the circle). The
measurement arc is 10dB stronger than the reference arc signal. After installing or replacing the
magnetron, it should be set so that the reference arc almost disappears from the radar display.

2 Radar observation
2.1 General
Radar is abbreviation for radio detection and ranging, the radar radiates electromagnetic
energy from an antenna to propagate in space, some of the reradiated energy is returned to and
received by the radar antenna, after amplification by a receiver and with the aid of proper signal
processing a decision is made at the output of the receiver as to whether or not a target echo
signal is present. At that time the target location and possibly other information about the target is
acquired.
factors such as the height of the antenna above the water, the height of the target of the target
above the sea, the size, shape and material of the target, and the atmospheric conditions. Under
normal atmospheric conditions, the maximum range is equal to the radar horizon or a little shorter.
Calculate Rmax according to the following formula:
Rmax 2.2 h1 h 2
Where Rmax : Radar horizon (nautical miles)
H1: Antenna height (m)
H2: Target height (m)
It should be noted that the detection range is reduced by precipitation (which absorbs the
radar signal).
Due to the possibility of refraction of electromagnetic waves caused by atmospheric factors,
the detection range usually longer than sight distance.
The maximum detecting range is depending on the system loss Ls in the equation. And long

MARINE RADAR/ARPA YAR27 Series Operation Manual
transmission line may affect the Ls, Cable insertion loss compensation can be achieved by
adjusting the cable gain to minimize the system loss of the radar and increase the maximum
detection range..
2.1Minimum range
The minimum range is defined as the shortest distance from the antenna to the target
(RCS=10m2),at this ditance ,this target can be detected clearly using a scale of 1.5 or 0.75 NM.
It is mainly dependent on the pulse length, antenna height, and signal processing such as
main pulse suppression and digital quantization. It is a good practice to use a shorter range scale
as far as it gives favorable definition or clarity of picture. The IMO resolution MSC.192 (79)
requires the minimum range to be less than 40m;The minimum range of this radar is 25 meters,
which meets this requirement.
2.1.3 Note: The RCS of test targets for determining the range and bearing resolution are 10m2
Bearing accuracy.
Bearing accuracy is one of the most important performance of radar.. It basically depends on
the narrowness of the radar beam.however, the bearing is usually taken relative to the ship’s
heading, and thus, proper adjustment of the heading line during installation is an important factor
in ensuring bearing accuracy. To minimize bearing error, you shuld select a suitable range to put

and related pulse length change. In long-range operation, long pulses of 3-5 MHz narrow
bandwidth are used, while in short-range operation, short pulses of 10-30 MHz wide bandwidth
are used. Radar signals below 5 MHz will slightly attenuate the SART signal, so it is preferable to
use the medium wave band to ensure optimal SART detection.

As for own ship, slow turning will not cause errors.. For very high turning rates (greater than
150°/minute, depending on gyro), there is some influence on all tracked targets that lasts for one
to two minute then all tracked targets revert to full accuracy.
As for other ships, target ship courses, heading lag 15 to 30 seconds at high relative speed, or
heading lag 30 to 60 seconds at low (near 0) relative speed. It is less accurate during a turn due to
lag, but accuracy recovers quickly.

Insufficient or too low radar receiver gain will result in some targets not being acquired at
long distance. One or more targets may be lost on the screen, that could only be visible if the
radar sensitivity control (gain control) were increased.
The setting of the correct radar receiver gain is important , it should aim for that the target be
on the radar PPI and be clearly visible and well defined.
If there are other radars operating in the same frequency band nearby, the radar will receive
