Introduction
Who was Pierre Loti and why would he be of interest to you?
A century ago readers with an interest in literature would have
laughed at that question. Elected in 1891 to the French Academy,
France’s highest distinction for men – and more recently women
– of letters, Julien Viaud, who became famous under the pen
name Pierre Loti, was admired during his lifetime both in France
and out as a master of prose style whose best works appealed
to a broad audience as well as those with refined tastes. In his
introduction to the translation of a collection of short pieces by
Viaud published in England in 1898, Henry James hailed their
author as a ‘remarkable genius’, ‘one of the joys of the time’, ‘the
companion, beyond all others, of my own selection’.1 Willa Cather
confessed that ‘she would swoon with joy if anyone saw traces of
Loti in her work’ and assigned his masterpiece, Pêcheur d’Islande
(Iceland Fisherman), to her students in Pittsburgh when she
taught there.2 Joseph Conrad envied him his success and mined
one of his novels, Ramuntcho, for important elements in Heart of
Darkness. Marcel Proust used two other Viaud novels extensively
in the first part of À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost
Time).
Since his death in 1923, however, though he remains in print
in France, Viaud’s name has largely disappeared from the list of
French authors known outside the country, unlike, for example, his
most popular contemporary and sometime rival, Émile Zola, or the
7
younger contemporary whose work most continues in Loti’s path,
Proust. It is difficult to explain this disappearance.
In part, no doubt, it was because some of his foreign publishers,
especially those in England and the United States, presented him
largely as a travel writer and exoticist rather than a serious novelist
like Zola or Proust. They repositioned half of his dozen novels to
fit that then-popular genre, retitling Aziyadé as Constantinople; Le
Mariage de Loti (The Marriage of Loti) as Tahiti; Le Roman d’un
spahi (The Story of a Spahi) as The Sahara; Mon frère Yves (My
Brother Yves) as A Tale of Brittany; Madame Chrysanthème (Madame
Chrysanthemum) – one of the sources for Puccini’s opera Madama
Butterfly – as Japan; and Ramuntcho as A Tale of the Pyrenees. The
beautiful coloured plates in the illustrated editions of these English
translations focused on picturesque landscapes rather than specific
scenes in the narratives. This tended to situate his works as light
reading rather than crafted art.
Part of the problem has also been, I suspect, that some of
Viaud’s novels no longer work well as popular fiction and never
found the more restricted audience to which they are likely to
appeal, the sort of reader who enjoys works like Proust’s mammoth
reflection on love and art, In Search of Lost Time. Like Proust, Viaud
knew that he was not meant to be a crafter of carefully wrought
plots in the style of Balzac, Flaubert, Zola or most popular fiction.
Proust conveyed his ideas about love, memory and art in one
long narrative that he developed for almost two decades. To make
such a unified, long-term effort seems never to have occurred to
Viaud, though he often used the same protagonist and perceived
his body of work as having a similar coherence: he advised potential
readers as early as 1891 from the very public podium of the French
Academy that he believed the works of significant fiction writers
were tied together by ‘the sort of unity without which they can be
neither great nor long-lasting’.3 Had he conceptualized his literary
endeavours as one sustained opus the way Proust did, he might
8
have found a more long-lasting readership abroad as well as at
home, one willing to accord his best work the serious reading that,
as I will show, it merits and rewards. Even as they stand, readers
will enjoy a richer experience of several of them by approaching
them as fragments of a similar large, reflective exploration of the
potential role of art in our lives.
Viaud conceived of his writing in terms of painting, and
particularly in terms of the sort of Impressionism that Monet was
developing at the time. As a result, some of his works can be read as
Impressionist paintings and discussions of Impressionism. Several
of his contemporaries understood that. Shortly after Viaud’s
death in 1923 and that of Monet in 1926, André Suarès, one of the
influential founders of La Nouvelle Revue française, went so far as to
proclaim that ‘far more than Sisley, Claude Monet or the Goncourt
brothers, Loti was the great Impressionist.’4 That position may be
extreme, but in 2007 French historian Franck Ferrand was still
willing to assert that ‘Pierre Loti [is] the only truly impressionist
writer of French literature.’5
Another element of Viaud’s opus that makes it of interest today
is that he was among the first Western novelists to devote sustained
sympathetic attention to the issue of male same-sex attraction. (If I
use that awkward phrase rather than ‘homosexuality’ or any of the
terms that have been developed in lgbt Studies over the last few
decades, it is because they all come with much-debated denotations
and connotations that do not apply to most of Viaud’s work.) The
author’s own sexuality has been argued in private and public texts
since he first became a celebrity. As we shall see, he had loving,
long-term relationships with several men through most of his adult
life. Over a hundred years later there is still no proof that he had sex
with any of them – but for whom is that still the criterion for being
homosexual? – and of course no proof that he did not, just as such
negative proof has never existed for any man. More interesting is
that, in an era when homosexual activity was for perhaps the first
