• What is power factor?

- The ratio of the real power, P absorbed by the load to the


apparent power | S | flowing in the circuit.

- The power factor is mathematically defined as the cosine of the


angle between the voltage waveform and the current waveform.

- Power factor is a measure of how effectively we are using


electricity.

- Types of loads in AC circuits:

resistive inductive capacitive

- For inductive loads:

- To improve the power factor, we need to add something that


has the same effect of the inductance but in opposite
direction.

- Opposite action of power for pure inductive and pure capacitive
