knowledge base in diverse S&T areas, is a contemporary R&D organisation. CSIR has a
dynamic network of 37 national laboratories, 39 outreach centres, 1 Innovation
Complex and three units with a pan-India presence. CSIR’s R&D expertise and
experience are embodied in about 3521 active scientists supported by about 4162
scientific technical personnel.
CSIR covers a wide spectrum of science and technology – from oceanography,
geophysics, chemicals, drugs, genomics, biotechnology and nanotechnology to
mining, aeronautics, instrumentation, environmental engineering and information
technology. It provides significant technological intervention in many areas
concerning societal efforts, which include environment, health, drinking water, food,
housing, energy, farm and non-farm sectors. Further, CSIR’s role in S&T human
resource development is noteworthy.
“Enhance quality of life of the citizens of India through innovative Science and
Technology, globally competitive R&D, by developing sustainable solutions and
capacity building to fulfil dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat”. This vision of CSIR is aligned
to the Government of India’s vision for the next 25 years ‘Amrit Kal’ when independent
India becomes 100 years old.

2023 About CSIR-NAL
December 21-23 National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), a constituent of the Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research (CSIR), India, established in 1959, is the only government
aerospace R&D laboratory in the country’s civilian sector.
CSIR-NAL contributions over the last five decades have enabled it to create a niche for
itself in advanced aerospace research and technology development. CSIR-NAL has
also developed many critical technologies for the strategic sector and continues to
support the mission-mode programs of the country. Currently, the laboratory has
taken up major civil aircraft programmes like two-seater flying trainer (Hansa-NG) and
Multi-Role Light Transport Aircraft (19 seater SARAS-Mk II) to enhance the air
connectivity under Govt. of India’s UDAN scheme. It is also leading the Project
Definition Phase of the Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) for preparation of the
Detailed Project Report (DPR). The aircraft programs aim to meet the country’s civil
aviation requirements and to synergize the multidisciplinary expertise of the
laboratory meeting the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
