Preface

Global Engineering: Design, Decision Making, and Communication is a book to be

used by engineers to learn about how to better design, make decisions, and
communicate in an international working environment. Today companies
expect to hire engineers who are effective in a global business environment.
Pressured by needs from industry and new accreditation criteria, for the past
years universities have attempted to incorporate globalization as an impor-
tant topic in their engineering curricula. One prevalent problem encountered
by those developing such curricula at engineering programs around the
world has been the lack of a framework and book specifically aimed to teach
the material to engineers. This book is aimed to bridge this gap. The authors
represent multiple engineering and nonengineering disciplines (industrial,
mechanical and manufacturing engineering, and organizational communi-
cation). The contents of the book reflect the authors’ multidisciplinary per-
spective as well as their experiences working in projects around the world.
The content of Global Engineering is based on original research involving
multinational organizations operating outside of their home countries. Our
research was sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
project DMI-0116635 in the United States and its Mexican counterpart, the
Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACyT), project 35981-U. Its
goal was to develop a group of case studies that characterized and formu-
lated how globalization affects engineering decisions that could be incor-
porated into engineering curricula. Although at the very beginning the
research was intended to focus on companies operating in North America,
very soon this had to be extended to include countries in Europe and Asia.
It is not the intent of the book to take sides on the issue of globalization. The
book presents globalization as a prevalent phenomenon affecting both the
way companies operate and most engineering functions.
Many books have been written about globalization, but most of them are
more suitable for students in the fields of business or the humanities. This
book is aimed specifically at engineering undergraduate and graduate stu-
dents and can be used as a text for a course on global engineering, or a refer-
ence for design courses with significant international component. The cases
in the book can also be used as a supplemental text in a wide range of tradi-
tional engineering courses that would benefit from real-world case studies. To
the best knowledge of the authors and the reviewers of the book manuscript,
this is the first book specifically aimed at engineering students. The authors
have used some of the material to teach courses at Texas A&M University and
Universidad de Las Americas (Cholula, Mexico) with very positive reception
by students from a variety of engineering disciplines (chemical engineering,
electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, and
