Section D – consists of 2 data / skill-based structured questions. Choose ONE question only in this section,
which must be in a different elective from that chosen in Section E.

Students attempting:
Question 1 in this section are NOT allowed to choose Question 3 in Section E.
Question 2 in this section are NOT allowed to choose Question 4 in Section E.

Section E – consists of 2 short essay questions. Choose ONE question only in this section, which must be in a
different elective from that chosen in Section D.

Students attempting:
Question 3 in this section are NOT allowed to choose Question 1 in Section D.
Question 4 in this section are NOT allowed to choose Question 2 in Section D.

2. Answer a total of TWO questions.

Section D: Answer ONE question from this section, which must be in a different elective from that chosen in
Section E. Each question carries 18 marks.
1. Elective: Dynamic Earth
Students attempting this question are NOT allowed to choose Question 3 in Section E.
Figures 1a and 1b show the simplified geological map and topographic map of Lantau Island respectively.
Figure 1c is a piece of article about a severe rainstorm in Hong Kong on 7 June 2008. Figure 1d is a map
(1: 20 000) showing the location of landslides on the slope above Cheung Tung Road on the same day.
Figure 1e shows an engineering measure built after the landslides in 2008.

On 7 June 2008, Hong Kong experienced a very heavy rainstorm with a record-breaking
145.5mm rainfall in an hour. Over 400 landslides were reported with considerable of them
concentrated on Lantau Island.

Notably, massive landslides near Cheung Tung Road on Lantau Island blocked the entire North
Lantau Highway and paralysed the traffic connecting the Airport and Tung Chung with other
areas for days.

(a) Refer to Figures 1a and 1b. Account for the relief and relief orientation of Lantau Island with reference to
the geological characteristics. (4 marks)
(b) Refer to Figure 1c. Identify and explain the fundamental cause of the landslides. (4 marks)
(c) Refer to Figures 1a and 1d. Explain the occurrence of the massive landslides above Cheung Tung Road
with the support of map evidence. (4 marks)
(d) Refer to Figure 1e. A debris barrier has been built between the slope and Cheung Tung Road after
the landslides in 2008.
(i) Evaluate the effectiveness of this measure to reduce the impacts of landslides. (4 marks)
(ii) Suggest other non-engineering measures for landslide prevention. (2 marks)
