Year 9 IGCSE Biology – Lesson 1
Lesson plan
By the end of the lesson, students will understand the importance of laboratory safety rules
Learning
and be able to identify key safety symbols and equipment, while also gaining an overview of
objective the main themes and scope of IGCSE Biology.
Identify common laboratory safety symbols and explain their meaning.
Lesson
Demonstrate correct use of basic safety equipment (e.g. goggles, lab coats, fire
objectives extinguisher, eye wash.)
Explain the key safety rules for working in a science laboratory.
Describe the major themes in IGCSE Biology (cells, organisms, genetics, ecology,
human biology, etc.)
Understand how lab safety supports successful study and practical work in biology.

Correction of all answers and discussion on questions where a
(20 mins) Bones to identify
significant number of students struggled. Explain common
misconceptions and clarify the concepts behind the correct answers .
Middle Pictures of joints
Interactive Review: Skeleton & Joint Station Activity
(20 mins)
Activity: Set up 2-3 stations around the room:
o Station 1: Bone Identification: Display images of major Pictures of athletes
bones (e.g., scapula, tibia, cranium, pelvis). Students
label them and state one function.
Past Paper
o Station 2: Joint Classification & Movement: Provide Questions on
diagrams of different joint types (e.g., elbow, hip, skeletons and
knee). Students identify the joint type (hinge, ball and joints
socket) and list possible movements (flexion,
extension, abduction, adduction).
o Station 3: "Real-Life Application": Present pictures of
athletes performing actions (e.g., a basketball player
shooting, a runner mid-stride). Students identify bones
and joints involved and the movements occurring.
Students rotate through stations, completing tasks.
End
"One Thing Learned" & Next Steps
(5 mins)
o Ask each student to share "one new or reinforced fact"
they learned about the skeletal system or joints today.
o Briefly outline the next topic (e.g., the muscular
system) and how it connects to the skeletal system for
movement.
o Encourage continued review of the skeletal and joint
notes/textbook pages.
o Give out past paper homework on skeletons and joints.
Due Thursday.
