SCORES
SECTION A (40 MARKS)
Answer all items in this section.
Item 1
In a competition, John, Tom, Peter and James were assigned duties. The competition was to discover
the details about the numbers given. John was to discover the last term and it was 43, Peter was to
discover the type of progression and he found out it was an arithmetic progression. Tom found to
discover the first term and it was 7. James discovered that the sum of the terms and it was 250.
Assuming they discovered the right information, use their data to find the number of terms and the
common difference.
Item 2.
The period of a simple pendulum is calculated from formula T = 2 π
l
g √where l is the length of the
pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity constant, find the percentage change in the period
caused by lengthening the pendulum by 2%.
Item 3
A security coder in the white house has intercepted a cyber-rebel encrypted message sent to one of the
rebels. It is suspected that the encrypted message is intended to relay bank account numbers containing
large sums of money that will be used to fund rebel attacks on the current government. The encrypted

message has a [2 x + 3 ] encryption passcode. The coder has invited to help him to open the message.
x
As a mathematics student, use your knowledge of binomial expansion to crack open the encrypted
message.
Item 4
An engineer has been assigned with the task of coming up with height of a tank to be build on the one
of the sides of the Mr. Kabuki’s house. The tank is to be cylindrical and it is to be made such that the
sum of its height and the circumference of its base is 45 π cm. The engineer has sent you as the residing
personnel on the site. He wants you to help the workers to determine the radius of the base that will be
used to obtain maximum volume of the tank.
Item 5.
A cathedral is to be built in the central region of Nsambya municipality. You have been contracted as
the site overseer. The planner has come up with an equation that is to be used to determine the angles
at which different portions of the roof are to be inclined with respect to the beam of the entire
Cathedral. The equation is given by the expression 2sinθ ( 5 cos 2 θ+1 )=3 sin 2 θ. Use trigonometry to
come up with all the angles of inclination.
Item 6
During an experimental study into bacterial strains. Three bacterial strains x (streptococcus), y (e-coli)
and z (bacteriophage) were studied. Their growth patterns were analysed and the results showed that
the growth patterns of the different bacterial strains x, y and z had the following logarithmic
relationships. x = log y z , y = log z x and z = log x y . It has been assumed that the product of the current
population of the bacterial strains is a unit. Authenticate such a claim.
Item 7.
Oakenshield, Thorin and O’Brein went to the yard shop to purchase bread, tea and sugar. O’Brein
picked 1 loaf of bread, 1 tea pack and 1 kg of sugar and he paid a sum of $6, Thorin bought 1 tea pack,
2 loaves of bread and 3 kgs of sugar paying a sum of $13, Oakenshield bought 1 kg of sugar, 2 tea
packs and 1 loaf of bread. He paid a sum of $7. When they came back home, they were confused about
how much they had used for each item. Help these triple lads, clear their confusion.
Item 8.
Quadratic are some of the mathematical relationships that can be used in complex trajectory motions
and genetic calculations. Data from Oaken beast servers used to study genetic matter show that
different genetic components are related by p x 2+ qx+ r=0 . Where p, q and r are genetic compositions.
The roots of such an equation double each other. Find the relationship between the genetic
components.
SECTION B (60 MARKS)
Answer only four questions in this section.
Item 9.
A company needs to make cylindrical cans of volume V that will be used to pack ice cream for
delivery to its distant online customers. Directives from their engineer show that each cylindrical can is
to be cut from one solid sphere of radius R. The company’s engineer is abroad and has contacted you
to authenticate his maximum volume of the cylindrical can. His schematic blue prints show that the
3
4π R
maximum volume of the can is given by V = . The can is to be closed on both ends with radius r
3 √3
and height h. It is to have a volume of 54 π cubic units.
Task:
a) Prove that the engineer’s schematics are true.
108 π
b) Show that S, which is the total surface area of the cylindrical can is given by S= + 2π r2
r
hence help the company determine the exact dimensions of the ice cream cans.
Item 10.
A credit society gives out a compound interest of 4.5% p.a. Fahad deposited $300,000 at the beginning
of each year. He is interested in determining much money he will have at the end of the 4 th year if no
withdrawal is made in between this period. He is also interested in finding out the relationship that
exits between his age and his three children’s ages. Results from the National Census show that
Fahad’s, and his three children’s ages are in a geometrical progression. The sum of their ages is 140
years. The sum of the ages of the last two children is 14 years.
Task
As a mathematics student who ventured into induction models,
a) Help Fahad find out the amount of money he will have at the end of the four years.
b) Find Fahad’s age.
Item 11.
Trigonometry is simply the relationship that exits between angles and sides of a triangle. Mr. Mukasa
is interested in constructing triangular house in the woods where he will be hanging out with his family
during summer. He has come to you with the building schematics that have complex trigonometric
expressions that were made by the planner for authentication. The blue prints of this triangular house
have the following complex trigonometric equations;
Cos2A + cos2B + cos2C -1 = -4 cosAcosBcosC and sin2A + sin2B + sin2C = 4sinAsinBsinC
Task: Help Mr Mukasa to prove whether these blue prints will grant the desired shape that he desires.
Item 12.
Polynomials are some of the mathematical concepts that are applied in modelling signals. A signal
processing company is making use of a polynomial f(x) = Q(x)g(x) + R(x) where Q(x) is the quotient,
g(x) = (x-α )(x- β ) is the divisor and R(x) is the remainder. The divisor is made in such away that it
gives a straight line when it divides the polynomial. This straight line is the one onto which neon atoms
can hit and become visibly pink and green.
If the above polynomial is leaves remainders 4 and 7 when divided by x-2 and x-3 respectively.
Task.
a) Show that the signal line formed when f(x) id divided by g(x) is given by
( x−β ) f ( α ) + ( α−x ) f (β)
R(x) =
α−β
b) Find the signal line onto which the neon atoms will hit to produce pink and green light.
