A force Facts on a particle of mass 3kg such that the velocity, v m/s of the particle at time t
seconds is given by v = (1 - sin 2t)i + (cos 2t - 1)j

(a) Find the magnitude of the force F on the particle at time seconds. t = pi/8. (5marks)

(b) Find the kinetic energy of the particle at time t seconds. (3marks)

(c) Given that the position vector of the particle at time t = pi/2 seconds is r = ((pi - 1)/2) i - pi/2 j
find the equation of the path of the particle. (5marks)

2. (i) The forces F1 and F2 act at points with position vectors r1 and r2 respectively where

F1 = (2i + 5j) N
r1 = (i + 2j) m
F2 = (æi - 5j) N
r2 = (2i - j) m

(a) Find the cartesian equation of the line of action of F1. (3marks)

Given that F1 and F2 form a couple, find

(b) the value of a, (2marks)


(c) the magnitude of the couple. (4marks)

(ii) The figure shows two uniform rectangular laminae of mass per unit area m, joint together.

Find the distance of the centre of mass of the composite lamina from the edge AB. (4marks)

3. (i) Two particles of mass m and 4m are connected by a light inelastic string of length 3a,
which passes through a small smooth fixed ring. The heavier particle hangs at rest at a distance
2a beneath the ring, while the lighter particle describes a horizontal circle with constant speed.
Find
(a) the distance of the plane of this circle below the ring. (5marks)
(b) the angular speed of the lighter particle. (3marks)

(ii) A body of mass mkg hangs freely in equilibrium at One end B of an elastic string of natural
length 3a, the other end is attached to a fixed point A vertically above B. Given that the distance
between A and B is 4a, find in terms of m
(a) the modulus of elasticity of the string, (2marks)
(b) the potential energy stored in the stretched string. (3marks)

4. A particle A of mass mkg is moving in a straight line on a smooth plane with speed 2um/s
when it collides directly with another particle B, of mass 2mkg moving with speed um/s in the
same direction as A. After the collision the speed of A becomes half its original value in the
same direction.

(a) Find the speed of B after collision. (3marks)


(b) Find the loss in kinetic energy due to the collision. (4marks)
(c) Find the coefficient of restitution between A and B. (3marks)

B subsequently collides with a vertical wall and rebound. Given that the coefficient of restitution
between B and the wall is ⅓, find the speed with which B rebound. (3marks)

5. A projectile is projected from a point on a horizontal plan with speed v m/s at an angle ø
above the plane.

Show that the time the particle takes to reach the maximum height above the plane of projection
is vsinø/g where g is the acceleration due to gravity. (3marks)

5. A particle P1 is fired from the origin O with speed u1, at an angle of inclination æ above the
x-axis, which is horizontal. At the instant when P1 is at the highest point of its path, a second
particle P2 is fired from O with speed u2 at an angle of inclination ẞ above the horizontal so that
the two particle collide at a point on the x-axis. Show that 4 tan ẞ = tan æ. (10marks)

6. (i) Two particles A and B of mass 1.2kg and 1.3kg respectively are connected by a light
inextensible string which passes over a light smooth and fixed pulley. The system is released
from rest with the string taut and hanging parts vertical.

Calculate (a) the acceleration of the system,

(b) The tension in the string. (2 marks)


Particle A hits the ground 10 seconds later and does not rebound.
Calculate (c) the total distance A travels before coming to instantaneous rest. (4marks)

(ii)A particle moves along a straight line with speed 3/(9 - s)m/s where s m is the distance
covered by the particle from a fixed point O on the line. Calculate the acceleration of the particle
when it has covered 3m. (4marks)

7. (i) The constant non-gravitational resistance to the motion of a car of mass 1500kg is 750N.
The engine of the car works at a constant rate of 20kW.

Find the maximum speed of the car

(a) on the level, (3marks)

(b) directly up a road inclined at an angle @ to the horizontal where 12 sin@ = 1. (3marks)
(Take g as 10m/s²)

(ii) A uniform rod AB of mass mkg and length 2l is roughly hinged at A to a point on a vertical
wall. The rod is held in a horizontal position by means of a light inextensible string. One end of
the string is attached to a point C on the wall vertically above A. A log of mass 2mkg is hung at
B. The system is in equilibrium when angle ABC is pi/6 and when the reaction of the hinge at A
makes an angle alpha with the horizontal.

(a) Find, in terms of m, an expression for the tension in the string. (3marks)
(b) Determine the exact value of tan alpha. (4marks)

8. Two boxes A and B contain 16 identical balls each. Box A contains 10 red balls and 6 white
balls. Box B contains 4 red balls and 12 white balls. An experiment consists of tossing a fair die
and drawing 2 balls at random, one after another and without replacement, from one of the 2
boxes. If the die shows a multiple of 3 the balls are drawn from box A, otherwise the balls are
drawn from box B.

Calculate the probability that

(a) one ball of each colour will be drawn, (4marks)


(b) no red ball will be drawn, (3marks)
(c) the second ball is red. (3marks)

Given that two white balls are drawn, calculate the probability that they came from box A.
