CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is a skills traning program

desisgned by the Nigeria government to bridge the gap between thereotical knowledge

aquired in classroom and practical experience required in the professional world. it is

primarily targeted at student in science, engeneering, technology, agriculture and other

related programs in tertiary institutions.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF SIWES

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was extablished in 1973 by the

industrial training fund (ITF) in Nigeria. the scheme was initiated in response to the growing

concern among employers of labour that graduates of tertiary institutions lacked adequate

practical experience and were not readily employable after graduation.

CHAPTER THREE

EXPERIENCE GAIN DURING THE SIWES PROGRAM

5
3.0 OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITY.

During my SIWES training, I was responsible for participating in practical tasks assigned by

my supervisor. I was involved in basic web development activities using HTML and CSS,

creating simple web pages like login and signup forms. I also assisted in organizing digital

records and understanding how information is managed within a system. I was expected to

follow instruction, meet deadlines, and ask questions when i needed help. These tasks helped

me gain hands-on experience and improve my confidence in hands-on experience and

improve my confidence in using computer systems for real-life solutions.

3.1 INTRODUCTION TO WEB DEVELOPMENT

Web development is the process of creating websites applications that people can access on

the internet. It involves designing how a site looks (frontend) and making it work properly

(backend). During my SIWES training, I was introduced to web development using tools like

HTML and CSS to build basic web pages. I also learned how the backend can be created

using PHP to make websites interactives and dynamic. This knowledge helped me understand

how real websites are built and how users interact with them.

3.2 HTML.

Hypertext Markup Language is the basic language used to create the structure of web pages.

It tells the browser how to display text,images,links, and other content. During my SIWES

program,i used HTML to design the layout of different web pages such as login forms,sign-

up pages,and dashboards. it helped me to understands how websites are builts from scratch

and how differents elements are arranged on a page. HTML is he foundation of all web

development and plays an important role in frontend design.

HTML example:

6
html

<DOCTYPE html>

<html>

<head>

<title>simple page</title>

</head>

<body>

<h2>Hello World!</h2>

<p>This is my first HTML page.</P>

</body>

<html>

3.3 CSS.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a language used to style and design web pages.It controls

how HTML elements looks on the screen-like colors,fonts,spacing,and layout.

CSS makes a plain HTML page look beautiful and well arranged.

Example of a css:

css

body {

background-colour: #fffffff;

7
font-family: verdana,sans-serif;

margin: 20px;

h1 {

color: #0066cc;

text align: center;

p{

font-size: 16px;

line-height: 1.6;

color: #333333;

3.4 PHP.

PHP (Hypertext preprocessor) is a server-side scripting language used to create dynamic and

interactive websites. It works with the HTML to connect to a database

Example of php code:

php

<?php

if (SERVER["REQUEST_METHOD"] = =

8
"POST")name = _POST ['name'];

echo"Welcome, " .name ."!";

?>

<form method ="POST">

<input type="text" name="name"

placeholder="Enter your name">

<button type="submit">Submit</button>

</form>

3.5 MICROSOFT EXCEL.

Microsoft excel is a spreadsheet program used for organizing and annalyzing data.During my

SIWES training

,I learnedhow to enter and format data in cells,use formulas for automathic calculations,and

create charts to represent data visually. These skills are helpful in tasks like managing

records,calculating totals,and preparing reports more efficiently.

3.6 GROUP PROJECT

As part of my traning, i participated in a group project a simple cybercafe management

system. This involves team work, task allocation, design and implementation of basic

features like user login, billing system, and computer usage tracking.

9
SIGN UP PAGE

The sign up page is the registration interface that allow new users to join or to create new

account

login

10
The login is the interface that allow users to login

DASHBOARD

A dashboard is a visual interface that shows important information,data,and controls in one

place so you can monitor and manage things quickly.

11
3.7 SKILLS AQUIRED

• Basic website development skills

• Document editing and formatting

• Excel data mangement

• Customer service and communication

• Time management and problem solving

3.9 LESSONS LEARNED

• Balncing experience is key to understanding theory

12
CHAPTER FOUR

3.8 CHALLENGES FACED

Some chalenges i encountered include:

• Lack of high-speed internet in some cases

• Balncing customers support duties with learning

4.2 Conclusion

The siwes program was a highly rewarding experience that helped bridge the gap between

academic theory and pratical application. Through hands-on training in HTML,CSS,PHP,and

Microsoft excel, I developed technical skill i gained, including teamwork, time management,

communication, and problem-solving.

Although there were challenges, they served as opportunies for growth. The experiences

reinforced the importance of continuous learning in the ever-changing field of technology.

overall, the program not only enhanced my professional competence but also gave me greater

confidence in my ability to contribute meaningfully to real-world projects.
