Purpose of Soot blowing
All heating surfaces should be kept free from soot to
maintain efficiency and reliability of the boiler, here soot
blowers play an important role.
Depending on the type of fuel fired, equipment
arrangement and operating conditions, soot blowers may be
installed to control ash or slag deposits on furnace, super-
heaters, reheaters, economisers and air heater.

SOOT BLOWER PAGE 3
Boiler performance and reliability are directly related to the
cleanliness of the heat transfer surfaces. thus when firing ash
bearing fuels such as coal or heavy fuel oil, ash or slag deposits
must be controlled by soot blowing.
It directs the jet of steam or compressed air to clean the heat
transferring area from material deposition, slagging, clinker etc.
The normal procedure is to clean the furnace from the top
down. In the convection zone, blowing is generally in the
direction of gas flow.
Soot blowers, except in the air heaters should be operated
only when the load of the boiler is above 50% of the rated
output, unless it has been demonstrated that there is no effect on
flame stability due to soot blowing at below 50% of the rated
output.

Classification of Soot blowers.
Soot Blowers are classified as
• Long Retractable Soot Blowers
• Half Retractable Soot blowers
• Wall De-slaggers.

Soot Blower function
• Furnace wall blower:
– Furnace wall blowers are used to remove excess slag deposited on the
metal surface of furnace tube and thus increase the heat absorbing
capacity of furnace
• Long and half retractable soot blower:
– The long and half retractable soot blower is used in superheater,
reheater and economiser zone
• Air heater soot blower
– Air heater soot blower is used to remove ash and unburnt carbon
deposits from metal surface and thus increases the efficiency of heat
transfer

Operation
• Soot blowers can be operated either from local panel or from
remote control panel. Soot blower can be clubbed in a group
and operated sequentially from soot blower control panel. The
control will be incorporated in DCS also.
• Basic Operation philosophy
– Operating order
• Furnace Wall blower will be operated from upside to downside so that
clinker will not fall from upside when the down side soot blower is under
operation
• LRSB and HRSB will be operated from downside to upside so that
downstream heating surfaces will not be blocked by ash from upside
• Air heater soot blower will be operated once in 8 hours
L&T - MHI Power Boilers
SOOT BLOWER PAGE 30
Operation philosophy
• Operating load:
– Furnace de-slaggers should be operated at more than 30% boiler load
– LRSB and HRSB should be operated at more than 30% of boiler load
– AH soot blower should be operated during start up in order to prevent
AH fire from unburnt deposits
• Overlap prevention:

Operation
• Operation mode:
– Sequential mode
• In this mode, different soot blower groups are operated sequentially as per the
internal order in PLC
– Group Mode
• In group mode, individual group can be operated
– Manual mode
• In manual mode, one individual soot blower or drain valve can be operated
independently
• In sequential or group mode, 2 wall de-slagger operates simultaneously which are
symmetrical to boiler center.
• LRSB and HRSB operates in pair (except soot blowers below 2 SH) of same
elevation and of opposite side
