On a busy Sunday, while I was preparing for Mass, a woman knocked on the parish
office door. I motioned for her to come in. Without hesitation, she handed me an
envelope and began apologizing, “Pasensya ka na po kaini, Father. Iyo sana muna ini
nakayanan ko. Para ini sa renovation kan Harong ni Iná.”
Igniting the Flame of
Hope in Our Hearts Esperanza (not her real name) is from Naga City. More than 15 years ago, she came to
Iná with a fervent prayer—she longed for a child and asked for her intercession
before God. Fighting back tears, she shared, “Yaon po ako digdi para magpasalamat
“UYA AN SAIMONG INA.” (JUAN 19:25) giraray ki Iná sa tabang nya sa sakuyang pamilya.” She had returned to Joroan on
pilgrimage—this time with her children.
“BEHOLD YOUR MOTHER.”

Recently, her business went bankrupt—just as the school year was about to begin.
She didn’t know how she was going to pay her children’s tuition. Once again, she
turned to Iná for help. And once again, her prayer was answered.

Now, she had come back to give thanks—to offer what she could, with a heart full of
gratitude to God, and in recognition of Iná’s loving intercession.

“Mabalik giraray ako, Father,” she said as she took her leave and joined the other
pilgrims for the next Sunday Mass.

This is the most recent story I’ve been graced to hear—straight from the heart of a
devotee. I am equally grateful for the many beautiful stories of faith and devotion
I’ve had the privilege to listen to. Over the past week, I’ve spent hours in individual
and group colloquia with parishioners expressing their desire to renew or begin their
service as lay liturgical ministers. A common refrain I hear is: “Maserbi ako ki Iná.
Kadakol an milagro asin tabang an ginibo nya sako.”

These stories ignite a flame of hope in my heart. An mga patotoo kan mga simpleng
deboto, minapalaad man nin paglaom sa sakuyang puso. Minadara nin pagranga an
saindang mga istorya.

I believe that Mary always watches over us, her children. She holds close to her heart
the words her Son spoke from the cross: “Behold your son.” Our fears and tears, our
dreams and joys, our hurts and struggles—Mary sees them all with loving eyes.
Because of this, we can live with hope.

We look to our Iná, and in her gaze, we know we are truly seen and loved. She
teaches us to see one another with the same loving eyes—not as strangers, but as
katood sa dalan —fellow pilgrims, each carrying our own burdens, each searching for
healing, joy, and freedom. As devotees of Iná, we walk together as Pilgrims of Hope.

We now open Camino de Joroan (Pilgrimage Season 2025), which runs from July 2, the
parish fiesta, to October 4, the Diocesan Marian Youth Pilgrimage.

THE TWO JUBILEES IN 1976:

THE BICENTENNIAL OF DEVOTION &
THE SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF LEGAZPI
In 1976, the Diocese of Legazpi celebrated its 25th anniversary,
marking a quarter century since its establishment after being carved
out of the larger Diocese of Caceres, which later became known as the
Archdiocese of Caceres. Coinciding with this milestone was another
significant event: the Bicentennial (1776–1976) of the Devotion to
Nuestra Señora de Salvación.
HISTORICAL MILESTONES OF
Bishop Teotimo Pacis, CM, DD, the second Bishop of Legazpi and a THE DEVOTION TO OUR LADY OF SALVATION
native of Tiwi, saw—with a shepherd’s heart deeply shaped by Marian
devotion—an opportune moment to deepen the diocese’s spiritual
life. In a pastoral letter issued on December 8, 1975, titled “On the
Devotion to Our Lady of Salvation”, he expressed the collective
religious sentiments of the faithful and formally declared Nuestra
Señora de Salvación as the Heavenly Queen of Albay and Patroness of
the Diocese of Legazpi.

This declaration launched a series of celebrations and pastoral efforts.

The diocese prepared for the Bicentennial by renovating the Joroan
Parish Church, anticipating its elevation as a diocesan shrine on
August 21, 1976. Bishop Pacis also initiated the process for the Fiesta Salvacion 2025 Theme
canonical coronation of the original and miraculous image of Inâ in
Joroan. This was joyfully fulfilled on August 25, 1976, when the MARIA: Ranga nin mga Disipulos,
Archbishop of Manila, Jaime Cardinal Sin, in the presence of all the
bishops of Bicol and 20,000 pilgrims, crowned the 200-year-old Paglaom nin Gabos
image of Our Lady of Salvation. “UYA AN SAIMONG INA.” (JUAN 19:25)

To prepare the local Church for these historic events, Bishop Pacis led DAYS OF FIAT

spirituality of the people. He called on parishes, barrios, and towns to

prayer. These efforts bore fruit when the Vatican—through the Mary and the grace of vocation

Recognizing the importance of cultural memory and historical Mary and the grace of obedience
awareness, Bishop Pacis also republished a historical booklet titled
Kasaysayan kan Ladawan ni Birhen de Salvacion sa Horoan, Tiwi, Albay, DAYS OF STABAT
written by Fr. Lamberto Fulay, the first parish priest of Joroan (1919– MARIA, AN DIOS YAON SAIMO
1924).

Throughout 1976, Bishop Pacis issued several Pastoral Bulletins to God looks with mercy on her lowliness

(1) To practice Christocentric Marian devotion & assist parishioners, pilgrims & devotees to do the same through
renewed integral evangelization & formation of Christian communities .
(2) To promote pilgrimages among the faithful through various approved forms of devotion to Mary, Our Lady of Salvation, and Our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Salvation of all humankind; through sedulous proclamation of the Word of God, and celebration of the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance.
(3) To propagate, nurture & deepen appreciation for the gift of devotion to Mary under the title of Our Lady of Salvation in the Diocese of Legazpi,
