Preface
The current status of theory and research in the areas of social power
and influence is clearly inadequate from almost anybody’s point of
view. Hypotheses are ambiguously stated, research programs continu
ally end up in cul-de-sacs, and experiments take on the character of
isolated one-shot studies. During a period when social psychology has
invented a revolutionary set of techniques to investigate social
psychological phenomena little accumulation of knowledge has been
achieved. The chief goal of the present effort is to provide some new
beginnings and to stimulate new directions for social psychological
research. The emphasis is upon the development of scientific theory.
The contributors were chosen because they represent the new
voices in sociology and social psychology. Most of them have been
out of their own graduate training programs one decade or less. Each
is a prodigious contributor to the research literature in his or her
topic area. All of the chapters offer explicit suggestions for impor
tant but as yet almost untouched research areas.
In their introductory chapter Tedeschi and Bonoma review some
of the theoretical discussion of social power. Most of the definitional
problems concerning the concept of power are identified as
philosophical or prescientific. Arguments about what power is too
often hide the complicated social influence relationships that
“connect” persons in interaction. The authors therefore provide an
analysis of the types of connections that can exist between persons
and suggest the major variables of interest for anyone who wishes to
develop a scientific theory of the social influence processes. The
modes of influence are those that exist between two persons—the
source of influence and his target. The characteristics of the two
parties may facilitate influence or produce resistance to it. Most of

the subsequent chapters can be categorized within the cubbyholes
provided by Chapter 1.
In Chapter 2, McLeod and Chaffee come to grips with the old but
unsolved problem of how people define the psychological situation.
Their juxtaposition of the individual’s perception of the situation
with the group’s consensus of the same situation puts the discussion
of the nature of social reality on the scientific level of discourse—a
clear gain for those who like to evaluate their conclusions by the
impartial judgments of Nature. The integration of the authors’
definitions with Newcomb’s A-B-X system and with socialization
analyses of cognitive styles of evaluating information and con
structing social reality are quite provocative.
In Chapter 3, Henry Minton views personality as a power
construct. Expectancies, dispositions, and aspirations produced by a
person’s experiences are directly implicated in the source’s attempt
to gain influence and the target’s resistance to influence. The roots of
such personal power are embedded in the development of the
individual, particularly his early childhood socialization. Minton’s
discussion of the possible developmental factors opens an entirely
new perspective and suggests a number of future research
possibilities.
In Chapter 4, Streufert and Fromkin review the various notions of
cognitive complexity that have been presented by theorists in the last
few years. Their contribution is an explicit extension of complexity
theory to some of the traditional problems of attitude research. The
result is a speculative series of hypotheses offered as scientifically
testable. Of course the focus is upon the individual difference factor
of cognitive complexity but the evidence gained by testing the
hypotheses should throw some light upon fundamental factors
involved in the social influence processes.
Walster and Abrahams shift the direction of the book away from
individual difference factors associated with cognitive styles, infor
mation evaluation, motivational dispositions, and cognitive com
plexity to the relationship between the source of influence and the
target individual. The degree or type of attraction between the two
parties is considered to be based on certain antecedent conditions
and has subsequent impact on the outcomes of social interactions.
Thus, the authors move away from the research emphasis on the
development of attraction to the effects of attraction (once it exists)
on the social influence processes.
Michener and Suchner view social power within the context of
exchange theory. After carefully explicating the basic principles they
have borrowed from elementary economics, the authors examine the
tactics people use to implement their interpersonal goals or to block
Preface ix
the tactics used by others. Four basic tactics are examined: (1) a
threat may be used as a deterrent or blocking action, (2) the group
may be expanded to include new members, who can then be
included in powerful coalitions, (3) formation of norms limit power
on the one hand, but freeze the status quo on the other, and (4) the
conferral of status renders the person high in the hierarchy
dependent upon those lower in the hierarchy, who, in effect, bestow
the social reinforcements. These tactics are integrated within the
terminology of exchange theory with the result that a number of
explicit research hypotheses are generated.
Tedeschi, Schlenker, and Lindskold focus upon the source of
influence and attempt to answer a series of questions: (1) Who
influences? (2) Why is a particular target chosen? and (3) How do
situational factors affect the source’s choice of an influence mode?
The utilization of the language of decision theory provides a loose
integration for the chapter and serves to generate a large number of
researchable questions, which for the most part have not even been
asked by social psychologists.
In the final chapter, Tedeschi, Bonoma, and Schlenker attempt to
provide a general theory of the social influence processes as they
affect the target individual. All interpersonal interactions are
interpreted in terms of tacit or explicit communications of threats,
promises, warnings, or mendations. Each type of message is shown to
have probability and value components, which are assumed to
mediate influence as a direct effect of their product. Source
characteristics of attraction, status, prestige, and esteem are assumed
to bias either upwards or downwards the target individual’s estimates
of a message’s probability component. A comprehensive review of
the research literature is offered to indicate the integrating power of
the theory.
We originally planned to have Israel Goldiamond write a chapter
devoted to the social engineering approach developed from operant
techniques. Unfortunately, Professor Goldiamond was involved in a
serious automobile accident and could not complete his manuscript.
We truly miss his contribution.
Each of the contributors has been patient and cooperative despite
the fact that arbitrary deadlines were set and chapter titles
constituted the only hint that they were given about the editor’s
expectations. The usual stylistic uniformities and certain space
limitations provided the only other editorial restrictions upon the
authors. Otherwise, each was asked to do his “own thing.”
The personal debts of the editor are many since he is neither
bashful nor hesitant in seeking help and advice from others. Past and
present students have been the best teachers of all. They have asked
