The Howard
Gardner(1999,2006)
proponent argues for broadening the
definition of intelligence
to include different kings
of abilities, an idea he
calls MuLtiple
Intelligences Theory.
Based on his study of
many people from
many different walks
of life in every
circumstances and
professions, Gardner
developed the theory
of multiple
intelligences.
Why did Gardner developed Multiple Intelligences?
● In order to capture the full range of abilities and talents
that people possess, Gardner theorizes that people do
not have just an intellectual capacity, but have many
kinds of intelligence, including musical,
interpersonal,spatial-visual, and linguistic intelligence.
What is the purpose of Multiple Intelligences?
● The Multiple Intelligences Theory can be
used for curriculum development,
planning instructions, selection of course
activities,and related assessment
strategies.
Why is theory of Multiple Intelligence important
for teachers?
● It encourages teachers to
create multiple methods
and activities which focus
on the same subject.
These are the following Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory:
A. Verbal- linguistic
intelligence
● A well- developed
verbal skills and
sensitivity to the
sounds, meaning and
rhythm of words
B. Logical- mathematical
intelligence
● The ability to think
conceptually and
abstractly, and
capacity to discern
logical and numerical
patterns.
C. Spatial-visual intelligence
● The capacity to think
in images and
pictures, to visualize
accurately and
abstractly.
D. Bodily- kinesthetic
intelligence
● The ability to control
one's body
movements and to
handle objects
skillfully.
E. Musical intelligence
● The ability to produce
and appreciate
rhythm, pitch and
timber.
F. Interpersonal intelligence
● The capacity to detect
and respond
appropriately to the
moods, motivations
and desires of others.
G. Intrapersonal intelligence
● The capacity to be
self- aware and in
tune with inner
feelings, values,
beliefs, and thinking
process.
H. Naturalist intelligence
● The ability to
recognize and
categorize plants,
animals and other
objects in nature.
I. Existential intelligence
● The sensibility and
capacity to tackle
deep questions about
human existence.
Gardner’s states that standard IQ tests
measure primarily verbal and logical
mathematical intelligence and neglect
other but equally, important kinds of
intelligence.
How to promote Multiple Intelligences in the
classroom?
● Diversifying activities
● Encouraging collaboration
● Using visual and manipulative resources
● Integrating music and movement
● Promoting reflection and self awareness
● Connecting learning with nature
