The First World War Scenario Worksheet

Starting in Chapter 11, Section 1, read the following questions and answer them
thoroughly. Once you have completed the worksheet, submit on Schoology for a
grade.

1. Rumblings are happening that there may be a war brewing. List and describe
the four long-term causes of World War I and how they shaped the beginning
stages of the war.

2. The radio mentions that two groups are forming alliances in case they have
to start fighting. What are the two groups? What countries were involved in
each group?

3. Your family mentions the Balkan Peninsula. The Balkan Peninsula is also
known as what? Why was this area important?

4. People begin to worry because they heard news regarding the heir to the Austrian
throne. Who is this person? Describe what happened with this person and why
would people worry given the news.

5. The tensions are high because the Great War has kicked off! You hear Germany
has begun using the “Schlieffen Plan”. How was this plan carried out? What was
the outcome of using this plan?

This plan called for a holding action against Russia combined with a quick drive through
Belgium to Paris after France fallen the two German troops would defeat Russia

6. Newspapers headline other military forces in trench warfare but you aren’t too
certain on what that could be. You talk to your grandfather who has some
military experience. What is trench warfare? Explain what a trench is and the
conditions of them.

11. Who was the president at that time and what was their stance on it? How did
Germany interact with the president at the time?

what the Zimmermann Note was and why it created concern for the United
States.

The note revealed a plan to renew unrestricted submarine warfare and to form an alliance
with Mexico and Japan if the United States declared war on Germany.
13. Times are changing and the United States is going to war. The radio host
mentions a Selective Service Act. What is that act? Who does it impact? Why
was it important to the United States during World War I (how did it benefit us?)?
14. You’ve been selected to go to war! How long is your training and what does it
consist of? If you are a woman, describe the duties you would be assigned to.
How does the military’s view on women differ from the men?

15. Your sergeant mentions an immense task that a squad of soldiers was sent to
do. What task was that and describe the four crucial steps that had to be taken
in order to expand.

16. The Germans are coming strong but Admiral Sims mentions using the convoy
system. Describe what that system is and how it was beneficial.
17. Two and a half years go by and you are now given the title of a “doughboy”.
What does that title mean and where did they get the name from?

18. Your weapons training is starting to come into use. List and describe the two
prominent weapons used during the war. What type of warfare did they usher
in?

19. The heavy use of weapons have brought in many issues with the soldiers.
What environments were the soldiers in and that injuries/ailments were a
result of those environments? How did each injury/ailment affect the soldiers
and the overall military?
The environment was muddled with mustard gas gun smoke bombs and more harmful thing it
made it hard to soldiers to function

20. They are telling you about this Great War hero, Alvin York. How is he? What
were his beliefs? What impact did he make in the war?
21. The war is over! It’s time to return home. List the outcomes of the war and
explain why that would make everything change once the soldiers came home.
