This book has many parents. It rests on the work of scholars, jour-
nalists, and novelists. If I listed them all here, I would inevitably leave some-
one out, not to mention that I would reduce the pool of potential reviewers
significantly. Embalmment of my sources in the endnotes is the best I can do.
Some of the professionals whose work is evident in this book are not ac-
knowledged in the notes. Copy editor Sarah Richards Doerries made splen-
did suggestions that improved the flow of the manuscript. Archivists in the
North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, the Library of Congress, the Duke Divinity School Library, Clemson
University, and the Virginia Historical Society shared their expertise. Don
Veasey of the Birmingham Public Library, Jim Willard of North Carolina
Historical Sites, Michael Rose and Betsy Ricks of the Atlanta History Center,
Cathy Mundale and Karen Jefferson of the Robert W. Woodruff Library at
the Atlanta University Center, and Heather A. Whitacre of the Museum of
the Confederacy were particularly helpful. Staff at the Charlotte Observer, es-
pecially Don Hinshaw and talented artists Kevin Siers and Diedra Laird, and
Mic Smith and Tom Spain at the Charleston (S.C.) Post & Courier offered
generous support to my project. And speaking of support, there is no finer
staff to work with than the folks at LSU Press.
The greatest gift to a historian is time; the time to engage in research, and
the time to reflect, write, and rewrite. I have been fortunate to work in an
environment at UNC-Charlotte that not only encourages my efforts but sup-
ports them, too. My history department colleagues, especially department

chair John Smail, have indulged my work probably more than I deserve. And
the university administration, particularly Dean Schley Lyons and Provost
Denise Trauth, have supported this and other productions. Chancellor James
H. Woodward has created an atmosphere that promotes both scholarship and
collegiality. It is a pleasure to come to work.
Melinda H. Desmarais served as my graduate assistant for three years dur-
ing the research and writing phases of the project. Her work with the Journal
of Urban History proved invaluable to my efforts, enabling me to devote more
of my time to this book. Her judgments were always correct and deadlines
always met. At the same time, she carried on an extensive research agenda of
her own, uncovering the role of black domestics in North Carolina textile
towns before World War II.
I completed the manuscript while serving as the Fulbright Chair in Ameri-
can Studies at Uppsala University in Sweden. I am grateful to the Fulbright
program and to Jeannette Lindström, Executive Director of the Swedish Ful-
bright Commission, for making this possible. I cannot say that Sweden pro-
vided any great insights into my work on the American South, but it did offer
a relaxed environment and the time to shape the manuscript. Erik Åsard, Di-
rector of the Swedish Institute for North American Studies, was especially
supportive of my project, and he offered several opportunities to inflict my
ideas on colleagues. The American Seminar at Cambridge University, run by
Tony Badger, also provided suggestions for my work in progress.
I have been especially blessed by a wonderful family. My father, Alex, with
his stories of life in Memphis, generated my initial curiosity about the South.
My sister, Joni Schwager, has been a source of good humor and fellowship,
often presenting the northern ‘‘take’’ on my region. Without Marie-Louise
Hedin, my wife, I doubt very much whether this page could have been writ-
ten at this time. She has provided a stability and affection that has allowed
me to sustain my work and my life. The South for her is really a foreign coun-
try. The contrast with her native Sweden has provided some interesting and
occasionally humorous insights.
This is the first book I have written that my mother, Sarah, will not see.
Through her struggles for life and against it she maintained a steadfast belief
in me and a spiritual love of learning. Through her, I learned to appreciate
good books, but especially good writing. May she rest peacefully.
Blaine Brownell is not related to me biologically as far as either of us can
figure out, but he has been a brother to me for more than thirty years. When-

ever I despaired about the South, I thought of Blaine, a Deep South native,
and grew hopeful for the future.
This book, because of its grounding in history, is really about the future.
I am proud to be a southerner, and though sorrow occasionally veils my opti-
mism, I can see in my students and in my children, Erik and Eleanor, south-
erners born and bred, that a new, more inclusive South is forming. My pride
in my region is my hope for my children and their generation. I dedicate this
work with love and hope to Erik and Eleanor.

Introduction
If it can be said that there are many Souths, the fact remains that there is
also one South.
—W. J. Cash, The Mind of the South
I live in a tolerable yet sometimes intolerable place. Its sensual cli-
mate lures the unsuspecting, and the grace, manners, and civility of its citi-
zens impart a preternatural quietude that belies the storm beneath. Its culture
is rich in music, food, conversation, and literature; yet it can be a barren
place, a tundra of conformity, a murderer of imagination, inquiry, and inno-
vation. Some who have loved it most deeply only to uncover the unpleasant
reality have cast themselves, rather than the place, as the betrayer. For they
have understood that the secret that lies beneath this place could, if broad-
cast, destroy it and them together. I am not immune to such feelings, though
I grew up elsewhere. I have spent much more than half my life in the South,
and I do not pretend to understand it yet. Perhaps I never will.
I do know that there is a war going on here. It is an ancient conflict, as war
and time go in this country. The Civil War is like a ghost that has not yet
made its peace and roams the land seeking solace, retribution, or vindication.
It continues to exist, an event without temporal boundaries, an interminable
struggle that has generated perhaps as many casualties since its alleged end
in 1865 as during the four preceding years when armies clashed on the battle-
field. For the society that became the South after 1865—and, truly, one could
1
2 Still Fighting the Civil War
not speak of a distinct South before that time—the Civil War and the Recon-
struction that followed shaped the form it takes today.
To justify the war, its great sacrifices, and its tragic conclusion, white
southerners exalted the cause for which they fought. To that end, they reha-
bilitated the Old South and restored the principles upon which its civilization
rested: white supremacy and patriarchy. Freedom was a dangerous thing; it
ruined a slave and removed women from the protection of men. While all
white southerners shared in fabricating a history out of necessity, white men,
above all, elevated their own deeds during the war and their efforts to redeem
the South afterward. Despite four years of fighting, after all, they had not
only failed their cause of independence but had faltered in protecting their
women and children and in keeping their slave families intact and working.
Those who had slaves lost them, and many more lost their patrimony and
self-respect. Southern white men could not live with failure and dishonor, so
they manufactured a past that obviated both and returned their pride, dignity,
and above all their control.
In this respect, white southerners responded as do many peoples of the
world when confronted with tragedy and defeat. In the seventh century b.c.
a young prince, Josiah, descended of King David, attained the throne of
Judah. A small, poor nation with great plans to unify disparate territories
under one ruler and one God required a history to justify its grand designs.
That epic evolved into the Hebrew Bible, a text not so much historical record
as ideological and theological tract designed ‘‘to appropriate the past for the
present.’’ But the one God could not protect Josiah and the people of Israel.
The Egyptian pharaoh killed the ruler and enslaved his subjects. Not long
after, Babylonians destroyed Judah and exiled its aristocracy. How to account
for such a tragedy? Revise the epic to place the blame for the kingdom’s
downfall on an earlier ruler and promise that unconditional obedience to the
covenant between God and the people will guarantee redemption and resto-
ration: ‘‘If the people obey the commandments, they yet have a future.’’ As
theologian Phyllis Trible wrote, this new version of the story ‘‘spoke to the
present; it served the needs of a defeated and dispossessed people.’’ Though
the promise of the return to glory and a rebuilt Temple never materialized,
the Bible became the source of survival for a defeated people.1
The Bible underscores that history and memory are not distinct. They
evolve from each other, and their interaction produces the flexibility that en-
ables traditions to survive through centuries of change. Trible noted that
‘‘What ‘actually happened’ and what a people thought happened belong to a
Introduction 3
single historical process,’’ and history and memory are indelibly ‘‘inter-
twined.’’ Historians should seek to understand how the interrelationship has
shaped people’s lives and the society in which they live.2
The intersection of history and memory creates traditions, and traditions
are central to a people’s identity in that they give meaning to the present and
offer hope for the future. Traditions banish time, connecting the past to the
present until they are indiscernible. Leon Wieseltier, a Jew writing for The
New Republic, states this idea simply: ‘‘In its liturgy and its ritual and its litera-
ture, my tradition makes the past into the present. . . . Tradition is an aboli-
tion of time and space.’’3 The Jewish people have long since left Egypt, but
their exodus still resonates in Jewish society, contributing to that society’s
sense of itself. Tradition is not predicated on secular concepts of time. If the
past is always present, then why should the past become obsolete? If the past
is essential for one’s identity, then renouncing, forgetting, or ignoring that
past shatters the self.
Tragedy is a central element to establishing and fostering tradition. It is
why the past always seems immanent; it is a wound that must be salved, a loss
that must be redeemed, and a reference point for all that comes after. What
moves a people to the realm of tragedy is unmerited suffering, perhaps losing
something precious like freedom or place. Memories of suffering and loss are
burned into the consciousness and carried for generations; they give identity
to the people. Occasionally, they are written down and become texts that
serve as sacred guides to present behavior and action; more often they reveal
themselves in laws and patterns of behavior and thought. The only thing
greater than tragedy, of course, is overcoming it; this is the history, the leg-
end, that people build nations upon. Conquering tragedy does not mean for-
getting history; to the contrary, victory illuminates the tragedy, honors its
victims, and blesses those who triumph. Sometimes the victory involves sim-
ple survival; sometimes it results from vanquishing a foe outright. Reversals
of fortune supply the historical foundations for nations and peoples in texts
as diverse as the Norse sagas and the New South renditions of the Civil War
and Reconstruction. They gird citizens for future battles, render them vigi-
lant against internal and external enemies, and generate vows never to lapse
or regress, so help us God. These histories cloak the present with signifi-
cance, a persistent pep talk from past generations to walk in the righteous
path of ancestors: do not forget their sacrifice or courage, for to do otherwise
would not only dishonor them but also destroy what we have gained.
Southern history is world history. And, as is the case with many places in
