2. Understand the features of academic writing and their importance.

III. Learning Procedure
A. ENGAGE (10 minutes)

1. Preliminaries:
a. Prayer
Teacher: “Good morning class, please all rise for the prayer to be led by
Mr. Benladin Sariol”

(everybody is praying)

b. Greetings
Teacher: “Again, good morning class!”
Students: “Good morning, Ma’am, Good morning classmates.”

c. Classroom management
Teacher: Before you sit down, please arrange the chairs and remove the
clutters from your desks.
Is it okay? You may be seated

d. Attendance
Teacher: “Is there any absent today?”

(answers may vary)

Teacher: “Okay! Very good!”

e. Recap
Teacher: Last time, we discussed one of the most important topics in our
subject, who still remembers our topic?”
Student: “We discussed about what is writing.”

f. Developmental activities
Teacher: I have here on the board a Semantic Web.
In the center, is the word ACADEMIC.
I want you to think of five words that you can connect to it, and you
have to write your answers in the boxes. I need five participants, who
wants to go first?
Yes, I see some hands!

Okay Ms. Surmina.

(Assuming students are done answering.)

Teacher:
Thank you for participating. All of your ideas are correct — great
thinking, everyone!

B. EXPLORE (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Exactly. Thank you for your cooperation."


Teacher: "I’ll be reading more examples, and you have to classify each
as academic or non-academic, and explain your reasoning. Raise your
right hand if you know the answer.”

1. Science textbook
2. Personal diary
3. Love letter
4. news article
5. history essay
6. A short story about a talking dog.
7. math workbook
8. A poem about friendship.
9. Pancake recipe
10. A social media comment on a funny video.

C. EXPLAIN (10 minutes)

Teacher: “Before I explain today’s topic, let me first read the objectives
of this lesson.”
I. Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify academic and non-academic writing.
2. Understand the features of academic writing and their importance.

Teacher: "In academic writing, we focus on objectivity, formality,


precision, and explicitness."
Teacher:" For example, instead of saying, 'You can see the result in table
one,' we say, 'The result can be seen in Table 1.' This is more formal and
objective."
Student: "So, we avoid saying 'I think' in academic writing?"
Teacher: "Exactly. It’s better to focus on facts and evidence."
Teacher: "And for non-academic writing, it’s more relaxed and personal,
right?"
Student: "Yes, like in my blog post about my weekend."

Teacher: “Do you have any questions?”


“Okay if there’s none, let’s have our group activity.”

D. ELABORATE (10 minutes)

Teacher: “This time, I will distribute sample texts wherein you will
identify whether it is academic or non-academic writing. This will be
done by group.
This row will be group 1, and this row will be group 2.”

Teacher: "Group 1, what example did you get? Is it academic or non-


academic? Why?"
Student 4: "This looks like a letter I’d send to a friend. It’s casual and
personal."
Teacher: "Right. And Group 2, what about this yours?"
Student 5: "It’s formal, uses technical words, and has references."

(assuming the teacher is done with the explanation)

Teacher: “How did you feel about the activity?”

“Okay nice.”
E. EVALUATE (10 minutes)

Teacher: This time we will have a short quiz to apply what you have
learned.
“You have 10 minutes to answer, you may start”

Assessment & Reflection Activities:


Instructions: Distinguish whether the key features of academic writing
are OBJECTIVITY, FORMALITY, PRECISION, or EXPLICITNESS. Write your
answers on the blanks provided before each number. (10 pts.)

__________________1. Does not refer to opinions or personal feelings.


__________________2. Provides precise facts/figures.
__________________3. Uses 3rd person point of view like he, she, it.
__________________4. Uses connections signalling words such as however,
because, similarly, furthermore, consequently, etc.
__________________5. Avoid abbreviated forms/contractions such as can’t,
doesn’t, shouldn’t.
__________________6. Avoid colloquial words and informal expressions.
__________________7. It presents information in an unbiassed way.
__________________8. Avoid two-word verb/verb phrases such as find-out,
help out, etc.
__________________9. It is signposting of the organization of the ideas in
the text.
__________________10. Nothing written there should leave the room to
interpretation.

Lesson Closure:
Teacher:
"Today, we learned the key differences between academic and non-
academic writing. Remember, choosing the right style depends on your
purpose and audience. Keep observing the texts you read and write
accordingly."

“Okay if there’s none, thank you so much for listening and participating,
see you next meeting. Goodbye class.”

Students: “Goodbye Ma’am, thank you for teaching us.”
