U•X•L American Decades provides a broad overview of the major events
and people that helped to shape American society throughout the twenti-
eth century. Each volume in this ten-volume set chronicles a single decade
and begins with an introduction to that decade and a timeline of major

ed to these categories of American endeavor:

                   The 1990s: An Overview
The decade of the 1990s began with great hope for Americans: the Soviet
Union dissolved and Iraq was defeated in the 1990–91 Persian Gulf War.
Yet that hope was not long-lasting. Although the fear of a global ther-
monuclear war with the Soviet Union had been removed, it was soon
replaced by the fear of a regional nuclear war involving India, Pakistan,
Israel, North Korea, or some shadowy terrorist group. In Iraq, Saddam
Hussein, though defeated militarily, still clung defiantly to power. In the
former communist state of Yugoslavia, national and religious rivalries that
had been suppressed under communism reemerged with a level of vio-
lence not seen in Europe since World War II (1939–45). Similar conflicts
arose in Africa and elsewhere, and the United States tried desperately and
often without success to keep the peace as the world’s policeman.
In this chaotic world, Americans found stability at home. For most
people in the country, the decade was a time of plentiful employment
opportunities. Democrat Bill Clinton served two successful terms as presi-
dent because the economy prospered, inflation stayed in check, and virtu-
ally anyone who wanted a job could find one. Clinton defined himself as a
New Democrat, which meant that on occasion his fiscal and trade policies
had more in common with Republicans than with his Democratic prede-
cessors. Such economic moderation played well in the 1990s.
Despite such agreement on the economy, relations between Republi-
cans and Democrats remained bitter throughout the decade. Especially
harsh were Republican attacks on Clinton. Since they could not criticize
his stance on the economy, they sought to hammer him on his character.
