Preface

Rapid developments in technology-based work environment, global interdepend-

ence in business transactions, tensions in changing organizational culture, and a new
dimension in work practice are all parts of the recent development in work and orga-
nizational psychology, and International business. With this fast development, an
increasingly difficult task is to provide an integrated discussion covering theoretical
developments, theory-driven research, new research trends, and dynamics between
organizational change and personal development within an enhanced technologi-
cally advanced working environment.
A comprehensive work for an edited book in work and organizational psy-
chology is impossible (Dam & Berg, 2004), unless one is selective due to the vast
areas covered by Work and Organizational Psychology. Similarly, relational
framework to capture changing nature of international business and global inter-
dependence cannot be presented in one edited book due to the sheer volume of
work needed to address the ongoing emerging issues as a result of changes in
international business spheres across the world.
What would be the best practice for an edited book to showcase selected and rep-
resentative areas of Work, Organizational Psychology and International Business?
We have made an attempt to answer this question with the use of a phenome-
nological approach. Taking a reflective practitioner’s perspective, our approach
has guided us to select experienced authors with longstanding research experi-
ences and deeper insights in both theoretical and practical developments. Our
authors have selected topics from their expertise areas where they can make a
leading scholarly contribution both at an organizational and an individual level
drawing on their personalized academic insights on the relationship between
these developmental issues with international business.
Drawing on our personal experiences of being active researchers and academic
practitioners in work and organizational psychology, and our exclusive work with
international experts in this field, we have also contributed chapters in selected
areas. We are aware of potential pitfalls associated with being selective and focus-
ing on certain issues, therefore, we have tried to justify such ‘focused’ direction
to the benefits of the global academic and practitioners community by making an

xvi Preface

invitation to leading scholars in respective areas from around the world. We

believe such a representation of scholars in our edited book will not only show a
global interdependence in scholarly work to changes in work and organizational
psychology and its relevance to international business, but also to provide
diversity and flexibility in presentation for a range of topics which have both local
and international relevance. Thoughtful academic insights are therefore grounded
in international context, with special attention being given to specific areas of
work and organizational psychology.
Students and practitioners of international business are often unaware of devel-
opments within psychology, and the purpose of this edited volume is to give
authoritative accounts of such developments, applied to key areas of international
business, in a form, which is accessible to both students and professional practi-
tioners.
The aims of the book are:
1. to provide authoritative reviews of current psychological knowledge in areas
of work and organizational psychology related to international business;
2. to apply psychological knowledge to current issues in international business;
3. to illustrate the applicability of recent research in work and organizational
psychology, using case studies, empirical research, and reflective account of
research experiences, to international business;
4. to offer a global perspective for work and organizational psychology in inter-
national business and management; and
5. to provide a representative collection of work to capture the recent develop-
ments in work and organizational psychology within the domain of
International business.
Advances in information and communications technology are so rapid that
their full implications for the conduct of international business are difficult to dis-
cern. Globalization and the recognition of both opportunities and challenges
offered by cultural diversity are particular issues, which face organizations, both
large and small. In particular, the Internet makes distance irrelevant when com-
municating with others. Psychology has much to offer to the understanding of
these changes. There have been rapid developments in Work and Organizational
Psychology in areas such as social identity and work, work and the social context,
and the changing nature of work. These are deeply relevant to the area of
International Business. However, there is always a delay before research in one
discipline begins to inform research and practice in another. A major aim of this
edited book is to signpost areas of concerns where interdisciplinary research work
can make a significant contribution to bridge the gap in the literature.

Preface xvii

Editing a book with a limited time span is not an easy task, especially when
we are engaged in other academic work and employment related activities; how-
ever, we believe that we have accomplished it competently with the help of our
excellent authors and publishers. Over the months, we have developed an excel-
lent academic partnership with our authors, and publishers who are ever so
encouraging and patient, and ready to provide practical suggestions with an
extended help for editorial work.
Nonetheless, we feel that there may be areas which may have been improved
should we get more time and space to invest, and also if we have been allowed to
run several meetings with international scholars, national and local businesses to
pinpoint areas of recent developments that need academic attention and interven-
tion. We are aware of shortcomings in presentation when we take a particular
approach, and also any conflicting views that may be the result of reflexive exer-
cise. However, we are proud of taking such an exceptional step in editing a book
on work and organizational psychological issues in international business. The
quality of work has never been compromised with the length expected for each
chapter; each chapter is unique in content and presentation styles.
In our long journey towards completion we have been encouraged by various
people; however most of all, we are grateful to our authors and publishers from
Elsevier. Also colleagues from our work place, and our family.
This book aims to take a place in the International Business and academic
world.
