Foreword
We want to decorate the prisms of our life with visions and insights
obtained from diverse thoughts and experiences. In every turn of our
journey through life we come across events and incidents that contribute
to enrich us with numerous realizations to make our life meaningful and
worth-living. In this journey called life wise seers make novel observations,
which they crystallise into thoughtful sayings for us to interpret our life in
new light while we traverse the path they have travelled. These thoughts
provide us with necessary directions to proceed in life with a better vision
about our existence. Here lies importance of quotations and meaningful
statements made by the foreseers.
It has not been an easy task to collect these valuable quotations for this
volume as these are found scattered in guise of coated pebbles. But when
the coats are removed these are recognized as gems and jewels that can
glitter the gloomy minds and illuminate darkened hearts. Also, these can
work as elixir for the demoralized and disheartened lost in the labyrinth
of life and living, dream and realisation, struggle and survival, and
aspiration and achievement.
The quotations included in this volume may be used by one and all in
speech and writings. People can easily memorise appropriate quotations
for enhancing their speaking repertoire also. In essence, it can be used by
people of all walks of life including professionals, students, teachers,
reporters, educationalists and other scholars of all branches of human
knowledge. With the help of these quotations we can make our speech or
writing maximally penetrative to the target audience or readers. This
inspires us to adorn our texts with suitable quotations plucked from
writings of great people so that our texts become impressive. Since
suitable quotations are not always readily available for this kind of
activity, this books aims at providing a large list of quotations of different
types to readers so that they can select appropriate ones from this
collection to use in their talks and texts, as and when required. Therefore,
Page 5 of 185
this book may be treated as an all-purpose handbook endowed with the
following features.
People who have made these quotations do not come from Europe
and America alone. They come from many other countries like
India, Japan, China, Canada, Russia, Australia, German, England,
France, Italy, Iran, Africa, Nigeria, and others. So, with regard to
contributors, the book has almost global coverage.
For nearly a decade I toiled to collect the quotations from many publicly
available sources such as literary texts, journals, newspapers, dictionaries,
advertisements, manifestoes etc. as well as from books and magazines of
philosophy, psychology, journalism, linguistics, history, physical sciences,
biological sciences, earth sciences, social sciences, commerce, computer
science, electronics, medical texts, legal documents, and internet, etc. Also,
I have tried to collect these from newspapers like The Times of India,
Hindustan Times, The Telegraph, The Statesman, Readers’ Digest, The
Hindu, and other sources. Besides, my interactions with people of different
walks of life have helped me to assemble their thoughts and furnish them
here as useful quotations. My sincere thanks go to them who have,
knowingly or unknowingly, enriched me with their insights, thoughts,
visions and motivation for developing a balanced view towards life.
I must mention the name of wife Soma, daughter Shrotriya, and son
Somaditya who have relentlessly insisted me to carry on with this work,
along with my research activities in linguistics and language technology,
for the benefit of one and all who are often confused with the puzzles of
life they come across in course of their living.
I shall consider my efforts amply rewarded if people find this book helpful
and use suitable quotations from this book in their speech and writing.

get both provocation and privacy. [Edward P. Morgan]
Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so
beautifully furnishes a house. [Henry Ward Beecher]
Books are the best of things, well used; abused, the worst. What is
the right use? What is the end which all means go to effect? They
are for nothing but to inspire. I had better never see a book than be
warped by its attraction clean out of my own orbit, and made a
satellite instead of a system. [Ralph Waldo Emerson]

literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a
standstill. [Barbara Tuchman]

what they had read about the effects of smoking that they gave up

not already possess. [Mortimer Adler]
In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you
can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.
[Mortimer Adler]
It is chiefly through books that we enjoy the intercourse with
superior minds. In the best books, great men talk to us, give us their
most previous thought, and pour their souls into ours. God be
thanked for books. [William Ellery Channing]
Just the knowledge that a good book is awaiting one at the end of

bed with a book before going to sleep, and that is the hour spent in
bed with a book after being called in the morning. [ Rose Macaulay]
Our house was a temple of books. We owned thousands, nay
millions of books. They lined the walls, filled the cupboards, and
turned the floor into a maze far more complex than Hampton
Court’s. Books ruled our lives. They were our demy Gods. [ Nick
Bantock]

deep freighted with truth and beauty. [Theodore Parker]

most. The hardest way of learning is by easy reading: but a great
book that comes from a great thinker — it is a ship of thought, deep
freighted with truth and with beauty. [Theodore Parker]
The difference between literature and journalism is that journalism
is unreadable and literature is not read. [ Oscar Wilde]
The experience of the race shows that we get our most important
education not through the books but through our works. We are
developed by our daily tasks or else demoralized by it, as by
nothing else. [Anna G. Spencer]
The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it
distracts, it excites, it gives you the knowledge of the world and
experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination. [ Elizabeth
Hardwick]

intensely for the reading of it. [Elizabeth Brew]

ground year after year and will not be persuaded. It is not because
the book is not there and worth being written — it is only because
the right form of the story does not present itself. There is only one
right form for a story and if you fail to find that form the story will
not tell itself. [Mark Twain]
There are two motives for reading a book: one, that you enjoy it;
the other that you can boast about it. [ Bertrand Russell]

over and actually read a volume of four or five hundred pages.
[Ralph Waldo Emerson]
A bad book is as much of a labour to write as a good one; it comes
as sincerely from the author’s soul. [Aldous Huxley]
A book is a mirror. If an ape looks into it an apostle is hardly likely
to look out. [George C. Lichtenberg]
A book lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition. Like money,
books must be kept in constant circulation. Lend and borrow to the
maximum of both books and money! But especially books, for
books represent infinitely more than money. [Henry Miller]
A book worth reading is worth buying. [John Ruskin]

you do’. [Morris Mandel]
Your name is what you curve. [Niladri Sekhar Dash]

The great nations have always acted like gangsters and the small
nations like prostitutes. [Stanley Kubrick]
NATURE
All things are bright and beautiful, all creatures are great and small,
all things are wise and wonderful. The God has made them all. [Cecil
H. Alexander]
Finding your original nature is not difficult. You are just being
identified with wrong things. De-identify yourself with that. Who you
are, is definitely within you. [Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev]
I am plus my surroundings, and if I do not preserve the latter, I do not
preserve my self. [Quixote]
I can see and that is why I can be so happy, in what you call the dark,
but which to me is golden. I can see a God-made world, not a man-
made world. [Helen Keller]
NECESSITY
Necessity is the plea of every infringement of human freedom. It is the
argument of the tyrants; it is the creed of the slaves. [William Pitt]

man. [Mahatma Gandhi]
NOVELTY
There is nothing new under the sun but there are lots of old things we
do not know. [Ambrose Bierce]
OLD AGE
Do not complain about growing old – many, many people do not
have that privilege. [Earl Warren]
Father Time is not always a hard parent, and, though he tarries for
none of his children, often lays his hand lightly upon those who have
used him well; making them old men and women inexorably enough,
but leaving their hearts and spirits young and in full vigour. With such
people the grey head is but the impression of the old fellow’s hand in
giving them his blessings, and every wrinkle but a notch in the quiet
calendar of a well-spent life. [Charles Dickens]
Life’s dusk brings its lamp with it. [Joseph Joubert]
No man is ever old enough to know better. [ Holbrook Jackson]
Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old

common occasions and make them great if you can. [ Orison S.
Marden]
God allows us an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and move
forward. [Jeffrey R. Palmer]
OPTIMISIM
I have become my own version of an optimist. If I cannot make it

I still believe that after every storm, eventually a rainbow appears.
[Mariah Carey]

ORIGINALITY

have done someone, somewhere in the past. The person who has
harmed you is only the medium through which God has managed to
teach you a lesson. [Anjleena Khunger]
No pain no gain. [English Proverb]
Pearl is result of pain borne by an oyster. [ Niladri Sekhar Dash]
The most important lesson that man can learn from his life is not that
there is pain in this world, but that it depends upon him to turn it into
good account. [Rabindranath Tagore]
We often add to our pain and suffering by being overly sensitive,
overreacting to minor things, and sometimes taking things too
personally. We tend to small things too seriously and blow them out of
proportion. [Dalai Lama]
When we cling to pain we end up punishing ourselves. [ Leo F.
Buscaglia]

for swallowing in. [Katherine Mansfield]
No man is rich enough to buy back his past. [ Oscar Wilde]
Our future is planted in our past. [Niladri Sekhar Dash]
The immediate past is of no more consequence than the more distant
past. So, we must think all past actions to be those of a past life. This
will make it easy to ignore them and to concentrate on laying the
basis for future spiritual development. [Sri Ramchandra Mission]
The past must no longer be used as an anvil for beating out the
present and the future. [Paul-Emile Bordaus]
When your past is imperfect, your future is tense. [ Niladri Sekhar
Dash]
Why does not the past decently bury itself, instead of sitting and
waiting to be admitted by the present? [D. H. Lawrence]

but by degrees? [William Shakespeare]
It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those
who are willing to endure pain with patience. [Julius Caesar]

God. [St. Matthew]
Children have little time for parents; parents have little time for each

Eisenberg]

real war against war; we shall have to begin with the children.
[Mahatma Gandhi]
PEOPLE
It is impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what
they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves.

People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when
the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is
revealed only if there is a light within. [Elizabeth Kubler-Ross]
People come into our life for a reason or for a season. [ Niladri Sekhar
Dash]
There is nothing to understand people. All you have to do is to take a
close look at yourself and you will understand everyone else. [ Isaac
Asimov]
Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what
they are. [Malcolm Forbes]
We are the people our parents warned us about. [ Jimmy Buffett]

wisdom, energy, forbearance, truthfulness, love, resolution and
serenity. [Gautama Buddha]
If you want to be perfect in your work just fall in love with it. [ Niladri
Sekhar Dash]
The yearning for our lost perfection, the urge to do and be that which
is the noblest, the most beautiful of which we are capable, is the
creative impulse of every high achievement. We strive for perfection
here because we long to be restored to our oneness with God.
[Yogananda Paramahansa]
We all suffer from the preoccupation that there exists – in the loved
one – the perfection. [Sidney Poitier]
When God created the soul he fell back upon himself and made her

worth living no matter how expensive or painful the lessons one has to
learn. [Richard Wisner]

less, say more. Like less, love more. And all good things will be yours.

about making a difference to the people around you. [ N.R.
Narayana Murthy]

RELATION
A relationship held loosely with respect and freedom for the other
