Debating
Society
The Debating Society of Loreto College is one of the
earliest and most distinguished societies. The society
organises training sessions, workshops, intra and
inter-college debate competitions, discussions to
foster critical thinking, public speaking, and
intellectual engagement among its members.
The Debating Society had organised the first of its
kind- Vivaad, an Inter-College National Level Debate,
in 2022; which witnessed participation from 15
prominent colleges from across the nation.
Additionally, the society sends its members as
representatives to a number of competitive events
organised by other educational institutions and have
participated in prestigious state and national level
debates including ones organised by the Calcutta
Debating Circle and National Youth Conclave.

We are pleased to announce the 2nd edition
of Vivaad, the National Debate Competition –
an intercollegiate event aimed at fostering
meaningful dialogue, critical thinking, and
articulate expression among students from
across the country. This year's edition will
see the participants battle it out in the
Parliamentary style of Debating. Vivaad
aspires to create a dynamic intellectual
environment where participants can
exchange diverse perspectives, sharpen their
reasoning skills, and gain invaluable
exposure to national-level competitions. We
warmly invite your college to be a part of this
stimulating and rewarding experience.
*Please note that travel and accommodation will not be
provided by the organizing institution; participating
teams are required to bear the costs independently*
RULES
1. Each college will be allowed to register only
one team. The registration form will be closed
as soon as the slots fill up.
2. Each team is made up of 2 participants.
Teams will be allowed to choose their own
stance strictly on first come first basis.
3. Reference to any form of written material is
strictly prohibited.
4. Use of unparliamentary language shall not
be entertained.
5. Teams must not include postgraduate
students. Any student above the
undergraduate level will not be allowed to
participate.
6. Cross-college teams are not allowed.
The decision of the panel of adjudicators shall
be final and binding.
7. The Debating Society of Loreto College
reserves the right to include, change or revoke
any rule at any point if necessary.

Debate
Debate
Each debating match will consist of two
teams; one to propose the motion and one to
oppose it. The team proposing may be known
as “The Proposition‟, “The Affirmative” or
“The Government”. The team opposing may
be known as “The Opposition‟ or “The
Negative”. Teams will be designated as the
Proposition or the Opposition for each round
of the competition. Each debate shall be
adjudicated upon by a panel comprising of
adjudicators. The debate will be conducted
over a span of two days and comprise two
rounds. Each college is allowed to send one
team consisting of two members.

THE MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMEMT SIDE ARE
THE FOLLOWING:
∙ Prime minister (PM) - Opens the debate,
defines the motion and advances arguments;
∙ Government whip (GW) - Makes an issue-based
rebuttal of the opposition's case and
summarizes the case of the government.
THE MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITION SIDE ARE
THE FOLLOWING:
∙ Leader of the Opposition (LO) - Responds
directly to the case of the government by
giving a direct clash, and advances arguments.
May challenge the motion if the definition is
challengeable;
∙ Opposition Whip (OW) - Makes an issues-based
rebuttal of the government's and summarizes
the case of the opposition.
P RELIMS
Format- Parliamentary Debate
Date- Saturday, 6th September, 2025
Mode- Online via Google Meet/Zoom
Time- 10:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
Two members from each team will
participate; per speaker time- 2:30 mins
Both members of a team will speak for
one stance - either proposition or
opposition.
The motion for the debate will be given 1
hour prior to the debate.
POIs shall not be entertained during
prelims.
The order of speaking will be decided
through a first-come-first-serve basis.
At the end of prelims, 10-15 teams would be
eliminated from the debate.
F INALS
Format- Parliamentary Debate
Date- Friday, 12th September, 2025
Venue- Concert Hall, Loreto College
Time- 10:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
Two members from each team will
participate; per speaker time- 4 mins
Both members of a team will speak for
one stance - either proposition or
opposition.
The motion for the debate will be given
1 hour prior to the debate.
POIs shall be entertained only during the
first 3 mins of per speaker time.
Teams will be allowed to choose their
own stance strictly on first-come-first-
basis
The results for the competition would be
announced on the same day.
