There’s a list of codes in an rc8 owners manual. Not sure if they carry over.

Since KTM won't give us a list of blink codes for our 2015 SAT, I developed one myself...rainy
day. I unplugged a bunch of stuff that was easily accessed and noted the CEL. All the codes
matched with other KTM models so I extrapolated for the rest. These codes should apply to all
1290s. But let's take this from the top for those fortunate enough to have never come face to
face with a flashing check engine light. As always, consider the source and remember
management assumes no responsibility for the accuracy of the following, though I did consult
with the cat. Anyway here is the good, the bad, and the ugly of blink codes according to
Hoss1:

Blink codes are generated by the ECU and considered to always have two digits, even if the first
is a zero. The number of long flashes designates the first digit and short flashes are used for the
second. They are actually a dinosaur left over from the early days of FI. In today's era of TFT
screens and powerful microprocessors, there is no reason their information can't be spelled out
in clear alpha text...don't hold your breath.

That said, they are a powerful trouble shooting aid and just as much help with keeping your
engine running as the dealer's PC. Knowledge of the codes transforms a flashing CEL from a
source of panic to a helpful piece of information. A competent mechanic with the proper tools
will never need the dealer's help again to stay on the road if they understand the codes.
However, this is not to say they are a direct replacement for the scanner. It provides other
information that is helpful in fine tuning performance, such as A/F ratios and throttle body
balance. Plus, of course, it talks to all the control units and not just the ECU.

Blink codes do have an Achilles heel however...mechanical problems. They only respond to
electrical issues. A physical problem will only trigger a code if it generates an unusual response
from one sensor or another. A broken rod sticking through the cases will not create a single
blink.

So just how does all this work in the real world...very nicely thank you. Here are a couple of
examples from my personal experience: Some time ago I finished working on our bike only to
have a flashing CEL I decided the 09 code was likely the MAP sensor for the rear cylinder. Sure
enough I had left it unplugged. Now I check for blink codes BEFORE the gas tank goes back on.
More recently the bike was running poorly and we discovered the throttle body was well out of
balance. We struggled to balance it because the ECU kept going into limp home mode and
flashing a 13 code. We had no idea what that code meant and we had to repeatedly shut things
down and wait for the ECU to reset. It took us an hour but we finally got the job done.
Unfortunately it didn't help much and we soon discovered the real problem was a broken valve
spring. After the spring was replaced, things needed balancing again. This time the ECU
remained happy and the job was MUCH easier. I had discovered the 13 code was most likely the
intake air temperature sensor. We had placed the air filter on the rear of the bike to gain access
to the throttle body and left the temperature sensor connected to it the first time. The second
time we removed the sensor from the filter and kept it near the motor in the heat zone.

Just a couple more thoughts: Some may find code 02 (crankshaft position sensor) very
beneficial. Also there is no code for the fuel pump. The closest code is 41 (fuel pump relay).
Although this isn't really much of an issue as the ECU actually gives an alpha message for the
pump.

Anyway here you go:

02 CEL flashes 0x long 2x short

Crankshaft position sensor

06 CEL flashes 0x long 6x short

Throttle position sensor circuit A

07 CEL flashes 0x long 7x short

Throttle position sensor circuit B

09 CEL flashes 0x long 9x short

Manifold absolute pressure sensor cylinder 1

11 CEL flashes 1x long 1x short

Manifold absolute pressure sensor cylinder 2

12 CEL flashes 1x long 2x short

Engine coolant temp sensor

13 CEL flashes 1x long 3x short

Intake air temp sensor

14 CEL flashes 1x long 4x short

Ambient air pressure sensor

15 CEL flashes 1x long 5x short

Rollover sensor

17 CEL flashes 1x long 7x short

Lambda sensor cylinder 1

18 CEL flashes 1x long 8x short

Lambda sensor cylinder 2

22 CEL flashes 2x long 2x short

Gear position sensor

24 CEL flashes 2x long 4x short

Power supply

25 CEL flashes 2x long 5x short

Side stand sensor

33 CEL flashes 3x long 3x short

Injector cylinder 1

34 CEL flashes 3x long 4x short

Injector cylinder 2

37 CEL flashes 3x long 7x short

Ignition coil 1, cylinder 1

38 CEL flashes 3x long 8x short

Ignition coil 1, cylinder 2

39 CEL flashes 3x long 9x short

Ignition coil 2, cylinder 1

40 CEL flashes 4x long 0x short

Ignition coil 2, cylinder 2

41 CEL flashes 4x long 1x short

Fuel pump relay

45 CEL flashes 4x long 5x short

Lambda sensor heater cylinder 1

46 CEL flashes 4x long 6x short

Lambda sensor heater cylinder 2

49 CEL flashes 4x long 9x short

Motor drive circuit A
50 CEL flashes 5x long 0x sh
Motor drive circuit B

54 CEL flashes 5x long 4x short

What a great job you did right there, it was very helpfull on understanding how it function.

By other hand i would like to know if you know which could be the problem with my bike, my
"malfunction indicator light" flashes 4x long and 4x short, i have read manuals and forums and i
cannot find any usefull information, from the fact you did a very deep revision, maybe you have
an answer or guideline.

Thanks in advenced

Nothing definite, but I suspect the tip over sensor...sloping position sensor in KTM lingo. How is
the bike running?

I guess you are experiencing a 30 blink code. I can't find any info on that. Sorry. If the bike is
running well, I'd not be too concerned. ECUs can make up codes from time to time. You might
cycle the key a few times to make sure it is consistent.

Did you take the shock out to lower it? Did you accidentally hit/unplug the rear cylinder coil
wire?
Rob you, Mar 27, 2025

Rob you

thanks for the replies, I change the front tyre lowered the rear with a spacer under the spring
then lowered the front by sliding the forks up the triple trees. then I switched on the bike and
no go. I then pulled the tank off and checked for any loose connections etc but no luck will start
the process again when I get home in a couple of weeks just haven't had the time, but am a bit
frustrated had no idea the KTMs would be so complicated electrically. I have a 2017 VStrom and
you just bridge 2 connectors under the seat and it displays a code you jump on the internet and
you find out what the problem is. but it looks like I have fucked something up when I lowered it.
Cheers Again Rob
