INSIGHT PAPER: “My Lasallian Identity”

By Mary Rose T. Toralba

Studying in the University of St. Lasalle, being one, and a part of the Lasallian
Community is such a privilege to have. It’s not just because of its name that entitles to a
lot of good things, but because there’s something in it that makes it one of a kind. It’s
touching every people’s heart and soul. It’s remembering that we are not just part of an
academe, but we, as Lasallians, are a part of each other. And as the song “We’ve Won”
by Gary Valenciano speaks to us, it highlights us, winning. But in what means? Simply,
by igniting the hearts of each one of us. Taking a serious look and seeing the
importance of creating a difference in even just one person’s life. With pride, together,
we take on to new adventures and journey, carrying the hope, the light, and the heart of
a Lasallian.

Words really aren’t enough to express just what it feels inside, to be able to have
new friends, see different cultures, be part of a wholly different environment, and see
yourself grow from someone not fully expressive and open to others with his/her
potentials, to someone confident, diligent, motivated and humble all at the same time.
From all the educators and staffs that helped us through all our firsts, taught us lessons
more than a book could offer, and made us who we are today, we offer our undying
gratitude and appreciation. Their passion with their crafts, patience and understanding
really shows what they are made of, and why they are a big part of this institution. With
this, We will carry on with everything we have gotten, to continually build up each other
and move towards what we are made for, who we are meant to be, and to serve our
individual purpose.

I really appreciate how the university would highlight the transparency and
openness of the people to different perspectives, views, and opinions they may hear or
encounter with each of their student’s lives. They have made it clear to us that there’s
nothing we should be ashamed or afraid of when we talk about our experiences and
individual beliefs as a person. Judgement is the very least that you would expect to
have received when showing your weaknesses and sharing your pasts. And as a
student, you never really understand and know that you’re a Lasallian, until you feel like
one. It’s when your heart and mind start to get touched by every little thing you
experience. It’s feeling the comfort of what feels like a family.

My Lasallian Identity is a reflection of all the experiences, lessons, relationships,

and knowledge I have gained from being part of this academe and institution. It is more
than just something I will proudly write in my resume or something I will talk about being
part of in the future, but it is something that I will remember to also have a place in my
heart, something that has sculpted my mind in a certain way of thinking, and has
equipped me with all best possible weapons I could use as I battle with my everyday
life. It molded my personality and entire well being to be tough, strong, and hopeful. It
ignited my soul to continually remember how I was taught, and who I am now. Someone
who knows how to live up the expectations that everyone has set for her and to go
beyond those expectations. Someone driven by her mind, her desires, and her love for
Christ Jesus. And that’s how I was proudly built as a Lasallian. That’s how I think I’ve
won as a person.
