Teaching Children’s Literature
“If you are searching for a children’s literature text that speaks to issues beyond what is eff ective literature,
this is the text that you should include in your teaching. Leland, Lewison, and Harste have created a text that
is practical and relies on sound research to provide a pathway to building connections with literature.”
Kevin Cordi, Ohio Northern University, USA
“This text celebrates the potential of children’s literature to encourage readers to engage in the reading
process, to think critically, to sort through ideas, and to act on them. Theory and practice are grounded in
pedagogy that puts the reader at the center of the process, enjoying the adventure with high-quality literature
across the curriculum.”
Denise H. Stuart, The University of Akron, USA
“ Teaching Children’s Literature: It’s Critical! is a must read. The authors cleverly combine research, theory, and
strategies that support classrooms filled with students who love reading, read critically, and use knowledge to
advocate for equity.”
Lunetta Williams, University of North Florida, USA
Inviting multiple ways of critically engaging with literature, this text off ers a fresh perspective on how to
integrate children’s literature into and across the curriculum in eff ective, purposeful ways. Structured around
three “mantras” that build on each other—Enjoy; Dig deeply; Take action—the book is rich with real examples
of teachers implementing critical pedagogy. The materials and practical strategies focus on issues that impact
children’s lives, building from students’ personal experiences and cultural knowledge to using language to
question the everyday world, analyze popular culture and media, understand how power relationships are
socially constructed, and consider actions that can be taken to promote social justice.
Written for teachers and teacher educators, each chapter opens with three elements that are closely linked:
classroom vignettes showcasing the use of literature and inviting conversation; three key principles elaborating
the main theme of the chapter and connecting theory with practice; and related research on the topics and
their importance for curriculum. Other chapter features include key issues in implementation, suggestions for
working with linguistically and culturally diverse students, alternative approaches to assessment, and
suggestions for further reading. A companion website to enrich and extend the text includes an annotated
bibliography of literature selections, suggested text sets, resources by chapter, and ideas for professional
development.

Preface
Children’s literature is taught in English departments in colleges of arts and science, in departments of library
science, and in schools of education. As a result, there are many different kinds of children’s literature
textbooks. Our experience has been that many books with “children’s literature” in their titles do a very
different kind of work than what parents, elementary and middle school teachers, and teacher educators want
to do with children’s literature.
So let’s be clear from the start. This book is primarily written for teachers and teacher educators—people
who work in preparing teachers in the area of reading and language arts and who are responsible for the
ongoing professional development of teachers in these areas.
Within this frame, children’s literature takes on heightened significance. We argue that using and teaching
children’s literature is critical to the development of a sound elementary and middle school curriculum. We
also argue that it is crucial that children’s literature be presented in a socially conscious fashion so as to prepare
a critically literate citizenry for the 21st century.
This volume builds from and extends the instructional model of critical literacy found in our earlier book,
Creating Critical Classrooms: K-8 Reading and Writing with an Edge (Lewison, Leland, & Harste, 2008, 2015).
The ability to think critically is more important now than it ever has been because our nation’s system of
public education is under attack from forces that seek to privatize it. While politicians and the media focus on
standardization and test scores, this book argues that the future of our democracy depends on our collective
ability to ensure that our children become enthusiastic and savvy readers, thinkers, and doers. To accomplish
this goal, we argue for a new educational mantra that shifts the focus from raising test scores to raising
readers. You will find this mantra Enjoy! Dig deeply! Take action! as a unifying theme throughout the book.
15
HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED
There are many ways to use trade books in classrooms and at home. To provide a coherent plan for exploring
such a complex subject, we have organized the chapters around the mantra described above.
The first chapter (Introduction) describes our goals for the book and articulates a conceptual framework for
our thinking.
Chapters 2, 3, and 4 focus on creating the conditions for learners to enjoy reading—Why Reading Aloud Is
Crucial, Teaching Reading with Literature, and Choosing Books: Diversity Counts.
The theme running through Chapters 5, 6, and 7 is the idea of preparing intellectually engaged readers who
dig deeply regardless of the text on a page or screen. These chapters include Language Study: Lingering in
Text; Supporting Literature Discussions; and Books across the Curriculum: Focused, Author, Illustrator, and
Genre Studies.
Chapters 8, 9, and 10 offer numerous suggestions for using children’s and adolescent literature to provide
opportunities for students at all levels to take action on issues they see as important—Multimodal Responses
to Literature; Challenging the Challengers, and Literature Response Strategies.
16
FEATURES THAT MAKE THIS BOOK SPECIAL
Each chapter opens with three elements that are closely linked:
• Vignettes. These short narratives showcase individual teachers using children’s literature in their
classrooms for a variety of purposes; they invite conversations about how others might use trade books to
address different topics or goals.
• Key principles. Following the opening vignette, the main theme of each chapter is elaborated via three
key principles that are intended to connect theory to practice. Since these principles relate specifically to
the content of each chapter, they go beyond the mantra described above. In other words, while each
chapter connects broadly to one part of the mantra, the key principles will help you to zoom in more
directly on what each chapter is about. Because curriculum is something we want to do “with” our
students (not “to” our students) we want students as well as teachers to own these principles. Curricular
principles are too important to be kept for oneself. They need to be shared with students, administrators,
and parents. Our goal is to support everyone in keeping his or her eyes on what is truly important.
• Related research. Every chapter includes numerous research citations focusing primarily on key studies
that clarify the topic and speak to its importance. These research citations can be used in building a case
for why the topic of the chapter is an important component of curriculum.
At the end of each chapter, six short sections focus on areas that merit extra attention:
• Key Issues in Implementation (how to get around roadblocks). We know that implementing many of our
recommendations will not be easy. Therefore, this section attempts to do two things. First, we describe
some of the policies and practices that might make achieving the goals of the chapter difficult. Second,
we explain how some teachers have worked around these issues and consider what other strategies we
might employ.
• Working With Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students. These sections provide suggestions for
working with diverse populations, including students whose primary language is other than English,
older readers who are less proficient, and students who are seen as “different” for any number of reasons.
Topics like inclusion, racism, and homophobia—that many teachers find challenging—might also be
addressed in this section.
• Technology Extensions and Electronic Resources. This section in each chapter references Internet resources
that teachers and students will find useful. While we know that technology is a moving target, we also
believe that there are many sites that will assist teachers in getting more children’s and adolescent
literature into their classrooms.
• Assessment. Since we know that everyone is concerned with knowing how to document growth, we
include a section that deals with this subject in each chapter. These pieces provide an alternative
approach to standardized testing and challenge the idea that teachers should not be an integral part of the
assessment process in their classrooms.
• Voices from the Field. A new feature in the second edition is the inclusion of Voices from the Field pieces
written by educators who are using critical literacy as a focus of their teaching.
17
• Suggestions for Further Reading. Three articles related to the content of each chapter are included to
stimulate discussion.
Companion Website. The dedicated companion website for Teaching Children’s Literature: It’s Critical!
(www.routledge.com/cw/leland) gives readers access to a large collection of book annotations, suggested text
sets, and other relevant materials. The updated website now contains Curricular Invitations and Ideas for
Professional Development that were included in the first edition but were moved to the web to make space for
new material in the second edition.
• Curricular Invitations. These are student-focused engagements that provide a way to put the content into
practice. These strategies support enjoyment, digging deeply, and taking action. They were created,
developed, and field-tested with teachers in a wide variety of classroom settings. Invitations are open-
ended, generative, and collaborative activities that teachers can discuss with students and then leave for
them to work on in small groups.
• Ideas for Professional Development. Suggestions for professional development activities and annotations
for related articles from the first edition are also now available on the web. These resources will be
especially helpful when teachers want to work together in study groups. Articles might be read together
and discussed as part of study group meetings.
18
WHAT’S NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION?
• Eight chapters contain original Voices from the Field pieces with examples from inspiring educators who
are using trade books to promote critical thinking and diversity.
• Every chapter has been thoroughly updated and includes new material, new technology resources, and
current references.
• Every chapter introduces new trade books for children and young people.
• Numerous new book annotations have been added to the dedicated website.
• The chapter order has been reorganized to improve overall coherence.
• The dedicated website now includes Curricular Invitations and Ideas for Professional Development that
were in the first edition.
19
OUR GOALS IN THIS BOOK
Our central goal is to create a critically thoughtful citizenry, hence the title of the book, Teaching Children’s
Literature: It’s Critical! By now, you have probably recognized the double meaning we have embedded in the
title of the book. First, we think it is critical (i.e. really important) to make trade books the centerpiece of any
reading program. But we are also arguing for a critical literacy approach to teaching that can guide thought and
action across the content areas as well as throughout life. Beginning with what students bring in terms of their
personal experiences and cultural knowledge, a critical approach encourages them to use language to question
the everyday world, interrogate the relationship between language and power, analyze popular culture and
media, understand how power relationships are socially constructed, and consider actions that can be taken to
promote social justice.
Literacy keeps changing and expanding. To be considered literate today, students need to be more literate
than their parents and their grandparents. This book is meant to support parents, teachers, and teacher
educators in using children’s and adolescent literature to live a curriculum that is supportive of leading a
critically literate life.
