Mary and her dad are talking at home. Listen carefully and help Mary complete the
application form. You now have 30 seconds to study the form. You may start now. (30-
second pause) Listen carefully. The conversation will begin now.
Dad : What are you doing, Mary?
Mary : I’m filling in an application form for the Charity Club.
Dad : Shall we do it together?
Mary : Sure. I just wrote down my full name. Now I need to give my age.
Dad : I guess you should write down the number eleven then.
Mary : Dad! I just turned twelve!
Dad : Sorry, I was just kidding around. (3-second pause)
Mary : OK, now I need to write down my class — 6C. (3-second pause)
Dad : What’s next?
Mary : I need to write down our telephone number — (slowly) two-three-double-seven,
four-three-six-four. (3-second pause)
Dad : Now what?
Mary : I need to give my e-mail address.
Dad : You’re on your own there — I always forget your e-mail address.
Mary : It’s mary-c-zero-nine at webmail dot h-k.
Dad : So that’s mary-c in small letters, followed by the numbers zero-nine, and then at
webmail dot h-k?
Mary : You got it!
Dad : Hopefully I’ll remember it this time. (3-second pause)
Mary : I need to write down our address as well.
Dad : I can help you with that — (slowly) it’s Flat D, Floor 17, Block A, Sunshine Plaza,
Sha Tin, Hong Kong.
Mary : Let me just make sure I spell ‘sunshine’ correctly — (slowly) S-U-N-S-H-I-N-E. (3-
second pause) Right, now I need to tick these boxes to list the types of charity
work I’ve done in the past.
Dad : Last month, you went on a charity walk, didn’t you?
Mary : Yes. (3-second pause) I also visited a children’s home last summer. (3-second
pause)

Dad : Don’t forget about the time you sold raffle tickets to help raise money for a
hospital.
Mary : Thanks for reminding me! (3-second pause) Now I just need to choose the types
of charity work I’m most interested in doing.
Dad : One of the options is ‘visit a home for the elderly’. Do you want to do that?
Mary : Yes, it sounds very interesting. (3-second pause) I also want to run a craft stall at
this year’s Charity Fair. (3-second pause)
Dad : Is that everything then?
Mary : Yes. Thanks for helping, Dad!

Suggested answer:
A special summer
My parents and I joined a charity programme in Shaanxi last summer. We stayed at
a village school from 15th to 29th August.
The school had a poor learning environment. There were not enough desks or chairs.
The students did not have enough books either. Before the trip, we collected some books
and toys. The students were very happy to receive them.
Volunteers could either teach the students English or make crafts with them. I am not
good at making crafts so I helped my parents teach English. My parents thought that all of
the students were very hard-working.
I felt happy that I could help the students in the village school. I hope I can visit them
again next year.
