‘SPECIFICATION STFFI AND TRONWORKER S/58 TTEM No HEADING DESCRIPTION ot 02 Generally Standard And Codes OF Practive STRUCTURAL STEELWORK This Specification is to be read in conjunction with the Conditions Of Contract, the General Specification and all others Specification and Drawings. The Contractor shall supply, fabricate and erect all steelwork shawn on the drawings or specified herein, in accordance with the specification. The Contractor shall allow for all necessary operations, including hoisting and fixing in position and shall supply all tools, machinery and appliances, including drift pins and fitting-up bolts, necessary for the expeditious handling of the work. The suitability and capacity of all plant and equipment used for erection shall be subjected to approval of the Engineer. Generally () Structural steel shall conform to BS 4360 unless specifically mentioned otherwise. The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer, copies of all mill test certificates for materials to be used in the work. Each piece of steel shall be identified by the manufacturer's name or trademark and batch number showing direct correlation to the mill test certificates. (i) The stee! shall be new and wall and cleanly rolled to the dimensions, sections and weights specified’ It shall be free trom cracks, surtace tlaws, laminations and other detects Bolts @ High otrongth friction grip bolts shall conform to DS 4995 part 1 General Grade, All high strength friction grip bolts shall be fined with load indicating washers. Surface Inspection () The Contractor chall arrange and provide all necessary inspection, when required by the Engineer to ensure that steel containing laminations, or other defects, is not incorporated in the work. The cost of such inspectivn shall be included in the rates. ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER S/6t TTEM | HEADING DESCRIPTION NO. 01 | Fabrication Generally Reh fa The specialist firm fabricating the steelwork shall be subject to prior approval by the Engineer, As much of the fabrication of steelwork as is reasonably practical shall be completed in the fabricator’s workshop. Rolled material. before being laid off or worked should be straight within the tolerance allowed by the relevant code and shall be free from twist If straightening or flattening is necessary it shall be done by a process and in a manner that will not injure the material and to the satisfaction of the Engineer, Finished members shall be true to line and free from twists, bends and open joints. ‘Component parts shall not be forcibly fitted together, Fabrication shall be in accordance with BS 5950 with the following amplifications and amendments :- (@ Machining of Place Edge Edges of all plates shall be accurately machined, and there shall be no gaps between the edges of web or flange plates and the edges or surface of adjacent parts. Machining of plate edges shall be such as to remove 3mm from edges previously seared. (i) Flame Cuttin Machine flame cutting of mild steel, by an approved procedure on approved machines, is acceptable as an alternative to shearing and planning. Machine flame cutting of high yield steel is acceptable as an alternative to shearing and planning provided that :~ 1) The flame cut edges is subsequently incorporated in a weld; 2) A controlled procedure approved by the Engineer is used, 50 as fo prevent undue hardening of the cut surface, and the use of flame cutting is limited to parts of the work approved for flame cutting by the Engineer and the flame cutting is followed by hand buffings to remove surface scale and round off the edges. ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER s/62 TTEM | HEADING DESCRIPTION NO 01 | Fabrication (ii) Ending of Members (Cont'd) The flame cut edces is subsequently incornorated in a weld: Unless otherwise specified or approved, all joints not formed by welding shall be closely butted with surfaces machined to the correct plane after fabrication (iv) Bolt Holes Holes for black and grip bolts shall be drilled 1.8mm larger than the nominal diameter of the bolt. (v) Bolts, Nuts and Washers Grip bolts, nuts and washers shall be of an approved type in which the bolt tension is indicated by the compression of protrusions formed on the washers, In other respects the dimensions of grip bolts, nuts and waslie's slicll wumply with B.S. 3139 Part 1. (vi) Thiel Assernibly of Structure To check the accuracy of fabrication, one complete truss and Lattice Girder shall pe erected at the works for inspection hy the Engineer and the cost shall be included in the rates. The Contractor shall rectify inaccuracies found during this inspection, all at his own expense until such time as the Engineer is satisfied that the erected span fully meets the requirements of the specifications and relevant diawinys and thet corrections made to members in the erected span have also been applied to the remaining steelwork. (vii) Inspection and Testing The Engineer or his representative may arrange tor the inspection and testing of all materials and workmanchip to ensure that they meet the standards required by this specification. Although he may also carry out dimensional checks during fabrication, it chould be noted that this will net normally be done until the fabrication of an individual members is complete. Notwithstanding any approval given or implied during inspection the Contractor shall be entirely responsible for the accuracy of fabrication and the quality of all materials and workmanship, Reh fend ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER Ref fo-4 $/83 TEM | HEADING DESCRIPTION NO 01 | Construction Construction generally shall comply with BS 5950 with the following amplifications and amendments :~ (i) Setting out of structure The shop lengths of steel members shall be such that it assembled in the unstressed condition, the configuration of the structure and the levels of the finished surfaces would correspond with those given on the drawings. (ii) Steelwork Drawinas The Contractor shall, at his own expense prepare working drawings as required of all parts of the steel structures and shall submit @ copy of each to the Engineer for approval, amendment or correction. If required by the Engineer, he shall submit further corrected or amended copies until finally approved. No part of the steelwork fabrication shall be put in hand until the relevant drawings have been approved. The Contractor shall supply to the Engineer a further copy of each of his approved drawing. He shall maintain a complete set of such approved drawings at the site throughout the period of the works. Among the drawings prepared by the Contractor and supplied as aforesaid to the Engineer and the site, shall be a full and clear set of marking plans and all necessary erection drawings. Notwithstanding any approval given or implied by the Engineer, the Contractor shall be entirely responsible for the accuracy of his own drawings and for the fabrication thereto. ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER. 8/64 TIEM | HEADING DESCRIPTION NO o1 | Welding All welding shall be carried out by the qualified welder in (Cont'd) accordance with the requirements of BS 5135 and AWS D1.1 and to the approval of the Engineer, @ ai) (iii) General Special care shall be taken to remove slag trom welds, and weld splatter from surrounding surfaces, after the welds have been completed and before final surface treatment, The welding plant shall be of modern design, either A.C. or D.C, and of adequate capacity to provide the required current to each welding point without appreciable fluctuation. Electrodes shall be stored in accordance with the iignuratturer’s recommendations. The coating shall be dry when each electrode is put inta use, and all un-used electrodes shall be returned to a heated store each evening. Adequate means of unidentification by a method to be agreed with the Engineer shall be approved to enable all Welds to be traced to the welding operator by whom they were made. All butt welds shall be continuously complete penetration butt welds made from both sides of the joint, unless otherwise shown on the drawings. In the fabrivativ of built-up members, all transverse putt welds in which component is welded to other parts of the members. Welding Procedures Ine welding procedure for making each joint shall be approved by the Engineer before the work is started and the Contractor shall make such trial welds may be required to demonstrate the soundness of the proposed methods and the competence of his workmen. Trial welds sliall Le made with the parts fitted together with the same clearances, coupled with the maximum limits of fit, lowest Precheat and wurst cuinbinalions of electrode conditions allowed by this Specification, or by the Contractor's proposed procedure, oN ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER, S/65 TTEM NO HEADING DESCRIPTION o1 02 Welding (Cont'd) Erection oo) Erection generally shall comply with 8S 5950 with the following amplifications and amendments :~ @ dil) Welding After assembly and before general welding is commenced, the individual parts are to be securely welded together in the line of the seams, The tack welds are to be sufficiently strong to prevent relative movement of the parts to be Joined, but small enough to be incorporated, In the main weld. ‘Any tack welds, or temporary connections not so incorporated, shall be removed and the surface ground flush with no undercutting. Every effort shall be made during fabrication to minimise the effects of distortion due to welding, and in particular suitable allowance for contraction must be made in the lengths of the steel parts before welding, so that the finished lengths are correct within normally accepted limits. Erection Procedure The Contractor shall be deemed to have satisfied himself, before tendering, of the safety and suitability of his Proposed methods of site erection. The erection procedure (including any temporary or permanent fastenings) shall at all stages be to the approval of Engineer. The Contractor shall submit for approval such detailed descriptions and drawings of his proposed procedure, together with supporting calculations, as the Engineer may require. High Strenath Friction Grip Bolts Connections by grip bolts shall be made as specified in B.S. 3294, Part 1 and addition:~ a) All bolts shall be provided with suitable hardened washers under both the head and nut. HEADING “SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER S/66 DESCRIPTION a2 Refi fo Erection (Cont'd) Surface Treatment before Delivery to Site a) (iii) High Strenath Friction Grip Bolts (Cont'd) b) These washers shall be suitably bevelled where the angle between the bolts axis and a steel bearing face Is outside the limit of 90 % + 1%. ¢) Where the induced bolt tension is indicated by protrusions on washers, such washers may replace a flat washer under the boit head, but in cases where It Is necessary to place the indicating washer under the nut, then an additional facing washer shall be supplied suitably heat treated to the same hardness as the bolt. d) All the grip bolts of one group shall be tightened sufficiently to bring all the parts firmly together, and to the satisfaction of the Engineer, before any bolt of the group is finally tightened. After final tightening the gap under the washer shall be as determined by the Engineer, and within the tolerance recommended by the manufacturer. Service bolts The use of permanent bolts as service bolts during the erection will be permitted where such use is not liable to cause damage to the protective treated treatment provided to the bolt. Any bolt so damaged shall be replaced at the Contractor's expense. Before fabrication, except as noted below all surfaces shall be :~ «i ) Properly cleaned by wire brushing or other approved methods to the complete satisfaction and approval of the Engineer. Painted with an approved pre-fabrication primer as soon as possible, and not more than four hours after blasting to an average dry film thickness of 0.5 mm. After fabrication, except as noted below, all surfaces shall :- o Have damaged areas of primer cleaned to the entire satisfaction of the Engineer and recoated. ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER S/67 TTeM | HEADING DESCRIPTION NO 01 | Blast Cleaning — Blast-Cleaning where specified shall be carried out in accordance with Bs 4232, but to give a surface finish Sa 2.5 to Swedish Standard SIS 05 59 00. The maximum grade of abrasive shail be as specified in Table 2 of BS 4232. The abrasive shall be free from contamination, and recovered material shall be cleaned to the satisfaction of the Engineer before re-use. Non metallic (containing Silica) abrasives shall not be used. The blast cleaner surface shall have a surface profile height between 50 and 100 microns. Blast-cleaned steelwork shall be free from dust, mill scale and adherent parcticles. The first coat primer shall be applied by an approved airless spray process with the least possible delay, and in any case within 2 hours of blast-cleaning. The successive coats shall_be applied within the time periods specified by the manufacturer. Suitable masks shall be provided at friction grip bolted connections to ensure that the friction surfaces are kept free of primer and paint, Before masking, areas to be brought into contract shall have received one coat of zinc metal spray paint. HEADING DESCRIPTION on 02 Surface Treatment before Delivery to Site (Cont'd) Bolted Joint (i) It should be noted that cleaning and repairing immediately after machining, drilling, welding, etc. is preferable and may obviate the possibility of substantial cleaning and repriming later. (il) After thorough cleaning to the satisfaction of the Engineer, be painted as described in the Schedule of Rates. ‘Secondary Material Secondary material, e.g. small members, loose packing shall be treated in accordance with the relevant clauses of this specification except that blast cleaning and priming may take place after fabrication at the option of the Contractor and with the approval of the Engineer. Joints and Connections Contract surfaces, including areas under heads and washers of all bolts and nuts shall be treated in accordance with sub-clause as described abave where applicable. (All contact surfaces shall be cleaned of all foreign matter immediately prior to being brought together, special care being taken to remove all oll, grease, etc., trom surtaces to be jointed by grip bolts. (ii) After tightening, bolt heads, nuts and washers shall be cleaned, and externally exposed surfaces painted with each primer. Following which, they and the surrounding area shall receive two coats of paints as described in the Bills of Quantities carefully tapped to the adjacent treatment after cleaning to the satisfa of the Engineer. ‘SPECIFICATION STEEL AND IRONWORKER, s/69 TTEM | HEADING DESCRIPTION NO 01 | Application of Painting shall only be done under favorable condition, which will be Paint determined by specification. Steel surface should be 3°C above dew point, The relative humidity of the air should not exceed 85%. Surface to be painted shall he free fram moisture, grease, dirt and other surface contamination. No solvent is used for cleaning / degreasing. However, if item is contaminated than recommended, manufacturer's thinner cleaner to be used. All paints to be used shall be properly mixed and applied as per manufacturer's recommendation. After every coat, paint shall be inspected for it’s general visual quality and thickness. The recommended minimum and maximum over coating thickness will be followed. 02 | Paint Coating The paint coating system specified will provide @ minimum corrosion system protaction to the structural eteal worl ‘Surface preparation : Blast cleaning to ISO 8501-1 : 1988, Sa 2.5, Unless otherwise stated, the paint coating system shall be in accordance with the following () 1% coat / primer wat : Two component Inorganic Zinc silicate = 75 microns (i) 2" coat High Solid Epoxy ~ 125 microns (iii) 3" coat High Solid Epoxy - 125 microns (iv) 4M coat Aliphatic Poly Urethane coatina ~ 50 microns 03 | Rates Rates for structural steelwork shall include for: (i) All shop and site holes, notches, ete. for bolts, etc, (ii) Surface treatment before delivery to site as described.
