Report-250120507234291 HALIMA ARC017733 06aug2025 142257

Mrs. Halima, a 93-year-old female, underwent a Hepatitis C Virus RNA Quantitative test which resulted in 'Target Not Detected', indicating no detectable HCV RNA in her serum. The report emphasizes that a 'Target Not Detected' result should not be interpreted as a negative HCV status. The test is crucial for monitoring HCV replication and guiding antiviral therapy, with limitations noted regarding detection sensitivity.

HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) RNA Quantitative (Viral load)

Target Selected : Highly conserved sequence within 5’UTR of the HCV
genome amongst all 6 genotypes.
Equipment : Rotor Gene Q
Specimen Type : Serum/ EDTA Plasma
Test Principle : Real Time PCR (Taqman Probe)
Result :
HCV-Hepatitis C Viral load (Quantitative) Target Not Detected IU/mL
Log Value NA
Result Interpretation:
Result (IU/ml) Log Value Comments
Target Not Detected Not Applicable HCV RNA Not Detected
HCV RNA Detected, less than 11.1 IU / ml. Quantitation
Below 11.1 IU / ml Below 1.05 not possible since the quantitative result is below limit
of detection. Reproducibility of positive results is not
assured
HCV RNA Detected, less than 25 IU / ml. Quantitation
≥ 11.1 – 25 IU / ml ≥ 1.05 - 1.40 not possible since the quantitative result is below the
linear range of the assay.
≥ 25 – 10000000 IU / ml ≥ 1.40 - 7.00 HCV RNA Detected within the linear range of the assay
Above 10000000 IU / ml Above 7.00 HCV RNA Detected above the linear range of the assay
Note:
This assay is a quantitative assay used for monitoring patients on therapy and not a Qualitative
assay used for screening. Hence a Target Not Detected result should not be considered as HCV
Status Negative for the patient.
Please note change in sensitivity and linear range of the assay.
Test Details :
Limit of Detection : 11.1 IU/ml
Measuring Range : 25 –10000000 IU/ml

Clinical Utility:
Estimate of level of HCV replication at baseline and during treatment
Document rapid (RVR) and early (EVR) virologic response
Guide duration of antiviral therapy
Confirm resolution of infection and sustained virologic response (SVR)
Clinical background:
HCV infection is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease, accounting for 60-70% of
all chronic hepatitis.
Acute HCV infection is often asymptomatic, or associated with non-specific symptoms, and usually
goes undiagnosed. However, 60% to 85% of patients develop chronic infection, which is associated
with increased risk of cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Detection and quantitation of HCV RNA is an important component of diagnosis and treatment
monitoring.
The Hepatitis C virus RNA Quantitative real time PCR is a sensitive assay and may be used to
document active infection in individuals with reactive HCV antibody EIA results, in
immunocompromised patients, Infants with suspected infection.
Limitation of Assay:
PCR is a highly sensitive technique; common reasons for paradoxical results are contamination
during specimen collection, selection of inappropriate specimen and inherent PCR inhibitors in the
sample.
Confirmed HCV cases may have viral load below this detection range.Hence the results Below 11.1
IU/ml do not indicate that the patient is negative for HCV.
All the results should always be correlated by clinical status and history of the patients.
