Preface
Big data analytics has been gradually becoming an integral aspect of decision-support
systems in several important and diverse domains such as finance, health care,
e-governance, agriculture, education, telecommunications, astronomy, security and
surveillance, media and entertainment, smart cities and transportation, and so on. Given
the ever-increasing amounts of data and the inherent heterogeneity and complexity
of the data in these domains, we need to build capabilities for designing the
next-generation of big data processing systems in order to perform actionable analytics.
Incidentally, new kinds of applications involving artificial intelligence, machine
learning, and reinforcement learning are gradually increasing in importance for gaining
valuable insights for decision-making, while considering the contextual aspect of
services deployment and delivery in various domains. These applications are essen-
tially data-driven and require the efficient management of massive, heterogeneous, and
disparate data repositories to enable knowledge extraction. This necessitates innova-
tions in the underlying Cloud computing infrastructure as well as the design and
modeling of data for supporting these complex cognitive technology-based
applications.
The 6th International Conference on Big Data Analytics (BDA) was held during
December 18–21, 2018, at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal,
Telangana State, India. The program included peer-reviewed research contributions as
well as invited contributions. A view of research activity across a wide gamut of big
data analytics was provided by the sessions on related topics. This volume contains the
contributions of keynote speakers, invited speakers, and tutorial speakers. This volume
also contains the peer-reviewed research contributions in the areas of the vision and
perspective of big data analytics, financial data analytics and data streams, Web and
social media data, big data systems and frameworks, predictive analytics in health care
and agricultural domains, as well as machine learning and pattern mining.
Within the big data analytics framework, the conference attracted submissions under
a wide gamut of diverse topics, including Web and social media, machine learning,
predictive analytics, modeling big data and data streams. Furthermore, the submissions
covered big data applications and frameworks in a wide variety of domains including
(but not limited to) finance, health care, and agriculture. The selected papers in these
proceedings, along with keynotes, invited talks, and tutorials on a variety of relevant
topics, are expected to further stimulate research and exposure to cutting-edge research
in the area of big data analytics.
The conference received 93 submissions. The Program Committee (PC) consisted of
researchers from both academia as well as industry from nine different countries,
namely, Japan, USA, Australia, India, China, Estonia, France, Canada, and Sweden.
Each submission was reviewed by three to four PC members. A PC discussion phase
was also incorporated to facilitate the final decision-making regarding the papers.
VI Preface
Based on this review process, the PC selected 12 full papers and six short papers. The
overall acceptance rate was 19.3%.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the members of the PC and external
reviewers for their time, energy, and expertise in providing support to BDA 2018.
Additionally, we would like to thank all the authors who considered BDA 2018 as the
forum to publish their research contributions.
The sponsoring organizations, the Steering Committee, and the Organizing
Committee deserve praise for the support they provided. A number of individuals
contributed to the success of the conference. We thank Prof. Divyakant Agrawal,
Dr. Mukesh Mohania, and Prof. Yoshiharu Ishikawa for their insightful keynote talks.
The conference received invaluable support from NIT, Warangal. In this context, we
thank Prof. N. V. Ramana Rao, Director, NIT Warangal, India. Many thanks are also
extended to the faculty members of the Department of Computer Science and Engi-
neering, National Institute of Technology, Warangal, for their constant cooperation and
support.
