Preface

The 17th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED 2015)

joined the longstanding series of biennial international conferences for high-quality
research in intelligent systems and cognitive science for educational computing
applications. The conference provides opportunities for the cross-fertilization of
approaches, techniques, and ideas from the many fields that comprise AIED, including
computer science, cognitive and learning sciences, education, game design, psychol-
ogy, sociology, linguistics, as well as many domain-specific areas. Since the first AIED
meeting over 30 years ago, both the breadth of the research and the reach of the
technologies have expanded in dramatic ways.
There were 170 submissions as full papers to AIED 2015, of which 50 were
accepted as long papers (10 pages) with oral presentation at the conference (for an
acceptance rate of 29%), and 65 were accepted for poster presentation with four pages
in the proceedings. Of the 20 papers directly submitted as posters, 13 were accepted.
Each submission was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee,
including one senior member. In addition, submissions underwent a discussion period
to ensure that all reviewers’ opinions would be considered and leveraged to generate a
group recommendation to the program chairs.
Three distinguished researchers from industry and academia gave plenary invited
talks illustrating prospective directions for the field: Vania Dimitrova (University of
Leeds, UK), Pierre Dillenbourg (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Center
for Digital Education at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), and Bror Saxberg,
Chief Learning Officer at Kaplan, Inc. (USA).
The conference also included:
– A Doctoral Consortium that provided 12 doctoral students with the opportunity to
present their ongoing doctoral research at the conference and receive invaluable
feedback from the AIED community.
– An Interactive Events session during which AIED attendees could experience first-
hand eight new and emerging intelligent learning environments via interactive
demonstrations.
– An Industry and Innovation Track intended to support connections between
industry (both for-profit and non-profit) and the research community. The seven
companies that participated in this track presented their need of and involvement
with educational technologies and engaged with AIED researchers to learn about
some of the most promising new developments in the field and connect with aca-
demic partners.
On the first and last day of the conference, AIED 2105 hosted eight workshops focused
on providing in-depth discussion of current and emerging topics of interest to the AIED
community, including: Intelligent Support for Learning in Groups (ISLG); Culturally
Aware Tutoring Systems (CATS 2015); Intelligent Support in Exploratory and

Open-Ended Learning Environments; Learning Analytics for Project-Based and

Experiential Learning Scenarios; Should AI Stay Married to Ed?; Simulated Learners;
Developing a Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT); Informing
Design Through a Community of Practice; and Affect, Meta-Affect, Data and Learning
(AMADL 2015).
We give our most heartfelt thanks to the Universidad National de Educacion a
Distancia (UNED) for hosting AIED 2015, and to our sponsors for their support:
Pearson, Carnegie Learning, and Carney Inc. We also want to acknowledge the
amazing work of the AIED 2015 Organizing Committee and of the Program Com-
mittee members (listed herein), who with their enthusiastic contributions gave us
invaluable support in putting this conference together.
