Editors

Joshua Arthurs is Associate Professor of History at West Virginia


University. He is the author of Excavating Modernity: The Roman Past in
Fascist Italy (Cornell University Press, 2012) and a Rome Prize Fellow in
Modern Italian Studies at the American Academy in Rome (2015–2016).
His research interests include the politics of memory and historical repre-
sentation in modern Italy; everyday life and emotion under dictatorship;
and receptions of the classical tradition in modern culture and politics. He
is currently completing a book manuscript on memory, experience, and
emotion during the fall of Mussolini in July 1943.
Michael Ebner is Associate Professor in the History Department at
Syracuse University. He is the author of Ordinary Violence in Mussolini’sItaly
(Cambridge University Press, 2011) and is currently researching and
­writing about Fascist empire-building in Africa.
Kate Ferris is Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of
St Andrews. Her research interests lie in Italian and Spanish history from
the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, and especially in everyday
life and the “lived experience” of dictatorship and questions of cultural
production and reception at local, national, and trans-national scales of
analysis. Her publications include Everyday Life in Fascist Venice, 1929–
1940 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) and Imagining “America” in Late
Nineteenth-Century Spain (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016).

Lorenzo Benadusi is Associate Professor of Contemporary History in the


Department of Humanistic Studies at Roma Tre University. He also served
as postdoctoral fellow in the International Humanities Program at Brown
University. His work analyzes the history of masculinity and homosexual-
ity from the unification of Italy to the Fascist period. The results have been
published in several articles and in a book, The Enemy of the New Man:
Homosexuality in Fascist Italy (Wisconsin University Press, 2012). He has
recently completed a project on the values of the Italian officers and the
bourgeois citizens (Ufficiale e gentiluomo. Virtù civili e valori militari in
Italia, 1896–1918, Feltrinelli 2015). He is also the author of Storia del
Corriere della Sera (Rizzoli, 2011) and, with Giorgio Caravale, of George
L. Mosse’s Italy. Interpretation, Reception, and Intellectual Heritage
(Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).
Geoff Eley is the Karl Pohrt Distinguished University Professor of
Contemporary History at the University of Michigan. He is the author of
numerous books, including (most recently) Nazism as Fascism: Violence,
Ideology, and the Ground of Consent in Germany, 1930–1945 (Routledge,
2013); After the Nazi Racial State: Difference and Democracy in Germany
