East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC)
INTERSHIP/VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME AT THE ECSA HEALTH
COMMUNITY SECRETARIAT.
1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION
The ECSA-HC is a regional organization set up in 1974 to promote the highest possible
standards of health among member countries. ECSA-HC is mandated to foster, among member
states, cooperation that will lead to the strengthening of health delivery programmes in the
region. The member states are Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Eswatini, Tanzania, Uganda,
Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The decisions and work of the member states are executed by a Secretariat that is
headquartered in Arusha in the United Republic of Tanzania. The Secretariat implements its
activities through specific programmes in Family Health and Infectious Diseases; Non-
Communicable Diseases, Food Security and Nutrition; Health Systems and Capacity
Development and Knowledge Management, Monitoring and Evaluation.
The ECSA -HC has 11 constituent Colleges as follows:
1. East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing and Midwifery (ECSACONM)
2. College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA)
3. College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA)
4. East Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ECSACOG)
5. East Central and Southern Africa College of Paediatrics and Child Health (ECSAPACH)
6. The East Central and Southern Africa College of Family Physicians (ECSACFP)
7. College of Pathologists of East Central and Southern Africa (COPECSA)
8. East Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP)
9. East Central and Southern Africa College of Oncology (ECSACO)
10. East Central and Southern Africa College of Paediatrics and Child Health (ECSAPACH)
11. The East Central and Southern Africa College of Public Health Physicians (ECSA
CPHP)
ECSAHC has an umbrella College (The East Central and Southern Africa College of Health
Sciences (ECSA-CHS) that oversees and coordinates the functioning of the above semi-
autonomous professional colleges.

2.0 INTERSHIP/VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME AT THE ECSA HEALTH
COMMUNITY SECRETARIAT
ECSA -HC Internship/Volunteering Programme provides a wide range of opportunities for high-
caliber graduate/postgraduate students and recently graduated candidates who are looking for a
“hands-on” learning experience in fields related to the ECSA-HC mandate and activities. The aim
of our internship programme is to give the Interns exposure to ECSA-HC daily work over a three
to six-month period. Volunteer positions are available for a period of six to -twelve months.
3.0 QUALIFICATIONS
To apply for an internship at the ECSA-HC, applicants must:
Internship
1. Be enrolled in the last year of a graduate degree,
2. Fresh graduate who seeks to develop their skills
3. Bachelor’s degree, Master or equivalent or in a higher degree programme relevant to the
ECSA-HC’s
4. Interns must provide proof of enrolment in a course of studies or proof of completion of
their last qualification
To apply as a volunteer at the ECSA-HC, applicants must;
1. Bachelor Degree, Master, PhD or equivalent or in a higher degree programme relevant to
the ECSA-HC’s
2. Candidates must have between 2 and 10 years of directly relevant experience.
3. Proven track record in implementing interventions at national and international level.
N:B There is no age limit for both internship and volunteer applicants.
4.0 METHOD OF APPLICATION
Preference shall be given to nationals of ECSA-HC member countries. Persons who wish to apply
for the internship /Volunteering should do so by submitting the following: -
i. A brief application letter stating reasons for applying for the internship/volunteering,
specifying areas of interest
ii. A detailed Curriculum Vitae.
iii. Copies of Educational and Professional Certificates.
iv. Completed ECSA-HC application form for internship/volunteering
v. Letter of support from the Institution (internship)
vi. Names of three (3) referees with their addresses including Telephone, and E-mail.
English is the working language at the ECSA-HC and applicant(s) are expected to be able to
adapt to an international, multicultural, environment. There is no age limit for applicants.

5.0 WHO ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR INTERSHIP/VOLUNTEERING
PROGRAMME AT ECSAHC
1. Close relatives of serving ECSAHC officials are not eligible for an internship/Volunteering
2. Candidates who have already worked at the ECSAHC or participated in the
Internship/Volunteer programme
6.O LIVING EXPENSES
The ECSAHC internship/Volunteering programme is unpaid and therefore will not cover the costs
related to travel, passport, visa, insurance coverage for illness and accidents and accommodation
etc. Applicants will be required to cater for their costs of living during the entire period of
internship/volunteering.
