TEXT A
The Winds of Energy Change

1. As the global demand for energy continues to rise, the need to transition to renewable
energy sources has become increasingly urgent. Renewable energy refers to energy
derived from natural resources that are replenished at a rate faster than they are
consumed, such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power. Unlike fossil fuels, which
are finite and contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, 5
renewable energy sources provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly
alternative.

2. One of the primary benefits of renewable energy is its potential to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. As the world grapples with
the consequences of rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and rising sea 10
levels, shifting to renewable energy sources is crucial in reducing our carbon footprint
and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Many countries have recognized the
importance of renewable energy in their efforts to combat climate change, setting
ambitious targets for the adoption of clean energy technologies and investing heavily
in research and development. 15

3. Renewable energy also offers significant economic advantages. As the cost of

renewable energy technologies continues to fall, they are becoming increasingly
competitive with traditional fossil fuels. Solar and wind power, in particular, have
experienced rapid cost reductions, making them more affordable for both large-scale
utilities and small-scale residential installations. Additionally, renewable energy projects 20
create numerous job opportunities in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance,
supporting local economies and promoting sustainable development.

4. Furthermore, renewable energy sources can enhance energy security and

independence. Countries that rely heavily on imported fossil fuels are vulnerable to
fluctuations in global oil and gas prices, as well as geopolitical tensions that may disrupt 25
supply chains. By diversifying their energy mix and investing in domestic renewable
energy resources, these countries can reduce their dependence on foreign energy
supplies and promote greater stability and resilience.

5. However, the transition to renewable energy is not without challenges. Intermittency, or

the variable nature of some renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, 30
can pose difficulties for grid management and energy storage. This necessitates the
development of advanced energy storage solutions and smart grid technologies to
ensure a reliable and consistent power supply. Additionally, while the costs of
renewable energy technologies have decreased significantly, the initial investment
required for infrastructure and installation can still be prohibitive for some regions and 35
communities.

5
English Home Language/P1 NOV/DEC 2023
6. To accelerate the transition to renewable energy, governments, businesses, and
individuals must work together to address these challenges and support the
development and adoption of clean energy technologies. This can be achieved through
various measures, such as providing financial incentives and subsidies for renewable 40
energy projects, investing in research and development to improve the efficiency and
affordability of renewable technologies, and promoting education and awareness about
the benefits of renewable energy.

7. Moreover, international cooperation is crucial in facilitating the global transition to

renewable energy. By sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices, countries can 45
support each other in overcoming the technical, financial, and regulatory barriers to
renewable energy adoption. The Paris Agreement, a landmark international climate
accord, exemplifies the importance of global cooperation in combating climate change
and promoting the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources.

8. In conclusion, the transition to renewable energy is essential in addressing the urgent 50

challenges of climate change, promoting economic growth, and enhancing energy
security. While significant progress has been made in recent years, there is still much
work to be done to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all. By working
together, we can harness the power of renewable energy to create a cleaner, greener,
and more resilient world for generations to come. 55

LIVE MORE SUSTAINABLY

Every day we make choices in our lives that affect the environment, the climate and other species.
There’s a lot we can do to reduce our environmental footprint.

Every product we purchase has an environmental footprint, from the materials used to create it to
the pollution emitted during manufacturing to the packaging that ends up in landfills. Before you
buy, ask yourself if you really need it. If you do, consider buying gently used instead of new, and
look for minimal packaging and shipping. If you’re in the market for a new car, look for a
fuelefficient model - you’ll save thousands on gas money and reduce your carbon footprint over the
years.

You can start cutting down on your plastic waste in a few simple steps: use reusable bags when
you shop, ditch single-use water bottles, bags, and straws and avoid products made from or
packaged in plastic whenever possible. To avoid contributing to the endangerment of wildlife, shop
conscientiously and look for products made from sustainable materials like bamboo and dine at
restaurants that refuse to serve imperilled species like bluefin tuna. Choose Fair Trade certified
goods when possible to support companies dedicated to sustainable production. Buy organic food
whenever possible; it may cost a little more, but it keeps harmful pesticides out of our land and
water, protecting farm workers, wildlife and your family.

Water conservation is also critical, especially as our growing population puts increased demand on
the nation’s water sources and we face unprecedented droughts. You can conserve water by
taking shorter showers, fixing leaky toilets, and choosing low-flow and low-water appliance options.
Meat production is one of the most environmentally destructive industries on the planet,
responsible for massive amounts of water use, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and habitat
destruction. You have three chances a day to improve the health of the planet - by reducing your
meat consumption you can reduce your environmental footprint.
