Is this considered being a dupe for
JHAG:s pear inc? They're not quite alike
but I enjoy them both anyway. Pear inc
has a much more prominent pear note
while in Golden lullaby it's more lingering
in the background. It's a soft and
intimate, slightly fresh and juicy perfume
well worth the price! I saw it listed as
similar to another 13 though. That
couldn't be more wrong, so don't expect
that :)

This is sold out, I can’t find it anymore in
Zara Malaysia.
Thankfully I got 2 bottles before it went
on sale.
This ‘Golden Lullaby’ scent is an easy to
use anytime fragrance and there’s even a
baby friendly version called ‘Le Petit
Lullaby’.

I ordered the set containing both golden
and petit lullaby during the summer sale
without thinking much of it. I needed a
simple fresh-out-the-shower type of
scent and, given that it only cost €12, I
thought I couldn’t go wrong either way.
So today I got the package and I smelled
golden lullaby for the first time, and my
first reaction was: this is such an easy
grab for those times when you don’t
really feel like wearing perfume but still
want to smell good. A fizzy sparkling
musk that mixes perfectly with your skin
chemistry and creates such a simple yet
interesting smell. Fresh, a little fruity,
cozy. It's nice :)

I was eyeing this fragrance from some
time, and then it disapperead, I already
knew it was a skin scent type of
fragrance and that I would have to blind
buy it so I was not willing to pay full price
for it; finally Zara decided to put it on
sale and for the price of 12,00€ I
managed to buy The Golden Lullaby
90ml + La Petite Lullaby 40ml in a
gorgeously illustrated coffret packaging
(there is some greenery and a
benevolent looking bunny on it, I as so
curious who the artist could be).
I am always very attracted by fragrances
marketed as clean and minimalistic,
more so when they are supposed to
smell like actually clean skin, a skin
scent not only because it is a light
fragrance but a true *your skin but
better* scent, often based on molecule
notes, but the concept of this collection
goes beyond that, hinting at a mother
and son bond and even if I am not a
mother that particularly tickled my
imagination!
The set contains a scent for a mother
and one for her baby, a new way to bond
and remember eachothers through
smell, a sort of imprinting effect for the
baby and a precious olfactive memory
for the mother. In this case it could be
actually possible since La Petite Lullaby,
which is the one marketed for the child,
has an alcohol free edc formulation and
what appears to be a quite clean inci
(contrary to the Emotions The Glaze
Collection which was marketed for
children and offered as alchool based
edt).
The Golden Lullaby opens with a pear
note that smells green and light, I belive
there also is a touch of bergamot
intertwined with it that disappears pretty
quickly. The pear note does becomes
more sweet as the scent warms on the
skin, but it is crisp, never juicy or
saccharine which I think works for the
best in this kind of fragrance. There is an
acquatic feel to this pear note, as if it
could actually be an aquatic fruit and it
sits very light on the skin.
Musk and ambroxan is what makes the
base, they are very well blended with
eachother to the point you can not pick
up where one ends and the others
begins. It is a light and gentle blend, and
it smells extremely clean while still
preserving its warmth, never lending on
an aseptic territory.
If I had to describe the type of ambroxan
Jo Malone imployed in here I would say
that it initially smells lightly sweet, it has
almost an undertone of candy floss but it
is a facet so light that it can't even be
described as such. It is similar to the
sweet undertone present in Cheeky
Smile by Jusbox, which is a 100%
molecular based fragrance, but in The
Golden Lullaby that sensation is twenty
times more subtle and light, softer even.
It then develops a transparent light
woodiness, similar to light colored cedar
but again so light that it's almost
unperceptable and there is no pencil
shaving effect.
Apart from the pear in the background,
at this stage the mix of musk and
ambroxan smells like warm, clean
human skin just fresh out of the shower.
When after some hour of wearing the
scent mixes with the natural oils and
sweat of the skin then a subtle salty skin
quality can be appreciated. It almost has
a "pheromonic" quality, typical of the
fragrance that use ambroxan as a
solinote or base, there is something
intriguing that is difficult to point out or
describe, it's the typical aspect of teh
ambroxan reminiscent of ambergris; this
could really be the smell or sensation a
new born captures on her mother skin
only that in here the effect is hightend, in
this sense this truly is a "your skin but
better" fragrance, done in a skin scent
style and concentration because
projection and potency in general goes
from moderate to intimate.
In the final part of the fragrance there is
a vague creaminess reminiscent of a veil
of sandalwood and then the ambroxan
sets on its main quality, it smells really
ambery similar to the ambrettolide smell
in the dry down of Another 13 by Labo
(another scent that on me and many
people takes a "your skin but better"
vibe), also reminiscent of Not a Perfume
Superdose and of the dry down of Pear
Inc both from Juliette Has a Gun.
At this time the musk can be isolated,
smelling now like a clean fabric softener,
light and airy, giving a vibe of skin on
which a clean textile has just been
sitting. It is a familiar and conforting
smell and it reminded me of a type of
musk that the house of Jovoy (and the
brands under it) often use, its smell is
familiar and reminiscent of a clean body
under clean sheets, specially when
combined with the warm amber smell
that the ambroxan yields.
Made me remember a time when as a
child I was afraid of the dark and would
sneak in to my mother bed, under white
clean sheets always treated with a huge
dose of fabric softener!
This type of fragrance based solely on
molecule are a bit difficult to describe,
sometimes they seem complicated
because many different elusive facet can
be captured, others they seem so simple
to the point of going beyond a
minimalistic style, appearing plain or
blunt. And they change greatly varying
on skin chemistry. I didn't observe an
harsh smell, a window cleanear smeĺ or
a burnt hair smell like sometimes it
happens with molecular fragrances.
Personally I think the overall result is a
clean ambery scent that smells like skin,
not so fruity or sweet, it is creamy and
round but transparent with a sleek style
that fits very well a clean girl aesthetic.
I don't find the scent powdery at all, in
comparison Le Petite Lullaby is slightly
more powdery.
They share the same pear and the same
musk, there is the same warm clean skin
smell but this time the scent is a "your
skin but better" infant version, with the
pear just a tad more strong. Of course
there is no ambroxan im the edc and it is
even more light and imperceptible. It
smells like the skin of a baby that after a
clean bath and some pampering with
talc goes to sleep on her mother chest
absorbing just a touch of the mother
perfume.
Both fragrance are helped greately by
the use of a cream as base, I have a
cream version of the scent which was
sold in a bundle with the house
fragrance of the same scent, also on
sale.
The Golden Lullaby lasts for about seven
to eight hours on my skin, at times
disappearing and then returning and a
light dry down can be appreciated until
the day after. Projection appears to be
moderate only in the first hour, then it
becomes a skin scent with an intimate
projection.
La Petite Lullaby was very light and
intimate, lasting for about two hours
even if oversprayed but beheving better
on hair, clothes or on a base of body
cream. It has the performance of an eau
de cologne.
If you are looking for a strong, peculiar
perfume then this is not for you. It is not
perfume-y at all, in that case it is much
better to go with Pear Inc by Juliette Has
a Gun, they share the amber for sure,
and Zara also offers different scent that
are pear based from which to chose.
If instead you are in your element with
fragrances such as Another 13 or
Ambrette 9 by Le Labo, Not a Perfume
and Superdose by Juliette Has a Gun,
Paper by Commodity, Milk by Dedcool
or even You by Glossier and Bare by
Victoria Secrets, and of course the
Escentric Molecule series then you could
find beauty in this Zara x Jo Malone
creation, it has a similar style but it is a
delicate and skin scent version of some
of them, perfect for the summer heat or
during an intimate encounter, for anyone
searching a personal base scent to layer
with others fragrances.
For the price the type of ambroxan used
seems to be a good quality with nothing
harsh about it.
I find the concept behind the fragrance
quite moving and so is the name of the
fragrance.
Is there something more pure then a
lullaby sung by a new mother to her
baby? It is golden because it's precious,
full of the most special love there is,
selfless and unconditional, a type of love
no else can ever give us in the same
way. It soothes and so does a mother
scent, the scent of safety, love and
home.
I remember researching about the story
of Jaycee Dugard, an inspiring strong
young lady that went through an
impossible ordeal, during her years of
captivity she couldn't even look up at the
sky but the light of the moon was
enough to make her remember of her
mother and the lullaby she used to sing
to her..."I see the moon and moon sees
me, God bless the moon and God bless
me", that was enough to give her
courage and hope that she may indeed
return to her family.
There is magic in a lullaby. And while this
fragrance may be not be something
extraordinary I think celebrating this
strong bond with a perfume was a
dignified way of acknowledging its
importance.
I think Jo Malone was seriously involved
in this project, if not so much creatively,
she surely was on an emotional level,
since this is her quote on The Golden
Lullaby: "When your baby is placed into
your arms for the first time there is an
amazing connection. A lullaby is
something so intimate between a mother
and her baby and the soothing voice of
their mother makes a baby feel safe and
secure. A lullaby is all about musical
notes and fragrance is all about fragrant
notes and the different accords".
And this is what she said about Le Petite
Lullaby: "When your baby is placed into
your arms for the first time there is an
amazing connection. The love you feel
rushes from the bottom of your feet to
your head in a second. As you swaddle
your baby in clean, crisp white blankets
and embrace that moment of pure
adoration, you are holding something
that will be so treasured to you for the
rest of your life".
