ANNEXURE – II
Title of Micro project
"Case Study of product Management"
1.0 Rationale:
Our Micro-Project is based on topic “Case Study of Product Management”. The basic
responsibility of a product manager is to manage the progress of a product throughout its
lifecycle, right from the initial phase up to the time it reaches the customers. It is a diverse
role constituting various smaller roles. Hence, Product Management deals with the complete
development of a product. A product manager needs to strategize the development of a
product, analyze it from various aspects, test the product, market the product, and eventually
act as a business executive

Product Management

❖ Meaning of Product Management
Product management is the role and function within an organization that is responsible for a product's
overall success. Product Managers work with groups inside and outside of the company to build and
execute a plan to make sure the product best meets its financial and strategic goals.
❖ Scope/Elements
• Product Management (PM) has emerged as one of the most pivotal elements of a
business’s core strategy. Product management pertains to the management of a
product/service offered by a company.
• In essence, it involves the supervision and management of the entire lifecycle of a product, from
the inception of the product idea and developing marketing campaigns to product delivery –
Product Management encompasses everything associated with a product’s successful launch in a
market.
❖ Objectives of Product Management
Product management goals differ from the objectives of production management, which refers to
managing how a product is manufactured.
• Product Development and Evolution: Competing companies often approach product creation in
different ways. One company might make a lawn mower with lots of bells and whistles and sell it at a
high price. Another company might make lawn mowers that offer the bare essentials but are more
affordable.
• Product Quality Control: An essential part of product management is making sure your product does
not have a high defect rate and high returns. This requires instituting quality control, or assurance,
whether you make the product yourself or use contractors.
• Product Data Analysis: Product managers meet with production, sales, marketing, customer service
and financial department managers to review all of their input on how products are made, sold and
delivered to customers. This helps the company find recurring problems, or alerts one department that
it is causing problems for another.
• Product Brand Management: Your product’s brand is its unique selling proposition, or differential.
19
Once you create a brand for your company and its products, you create a branding plan, which
includes a slogan, packaging graphics, a logo, specific price point and distribution channels that send
the message you want (for example, selling a high-end shampoo only in salons, rather than big-box
stores).
• Developing Product Expertise: Until a product has been launched and sold for long enough to learn
what its successes and failures are, product managers can only estimate how an item will perform
for the business. As the company begins to sell a new item, a product manager must track its
performance in all areas related to its success or failure and develop the expertise to spot potential
problems as they occur, and even predict what challenges might crop up in the future,
explains Product Focus.
❖ Functions of Product Management
• Vision development: Product vision is a significant part of product management. If we were to
compare product management to a road, the vision is both a road sign and a destination. It
defines the final product and shows the direction towards achieving it. It’s not a strategy of
product development yet, but this is where the strategy development starts with idea
management when a team discusses a new product. The vision can be articulated during a
brainstorm or may be based on a backlog of ideas.
• Strategy development: Once you have the vision, know the market, and understand customers’
needs, a specific product strategy has to be formulated accordingly. While a vision defines the
goals for a product, strategy describes a way to achieve them and sets main milestones. This
must be a clear and realistic plan for the team that works on a product.
• Execution and testing: During the execution stage, a product team works on the product itself.
They build a new product or add new features to an existing one. Main phases of this stage are
product development, internal and external testing, and the application of feedback results. All
along the execution stage, a product manager controls the implementation of the roadmap and
participates in accompanying activities.
• Marketing and Sales: Once the product is completed, it’s time for it to enter the market. At this
stage, marketing and launch plans have to be finalized, and the sales teams trained to start
distribution.
20
❖ Product Planning
➢ Definition of Financial Planning
Behind each product, there's a strategy. In a Product Managers' world, we call it – product management
process. It's a continuous flow of making assumptions, experimenting, refining the experience, learning
from it, and building a real product.
➢ Importance of Product Planning
Product planning embraces all activities which enable producers and middlemen to
determine what should constitute Company's line of products The importance can be
outlined as-
• To Identify and Fulfill Customers' Needs
• To Determine Strengths and Weaknesses of the Firm
• To Ensure Optimum Utilization of Resources
• To Assure Firm's Survival
• To Enhance Level of Sales
• Ensures Profitability of the Product
• Reduces risk of product failure
• Strengthen collaboration between internal teams
• Ensuring that each product meets the need of targeted users or customers
❖ Product Manager
21
A product manager is the person who identifies the customer need and the larger business
objectives that a product or feature will fulfill, articulates what success looks like for a
product, and rallies a team to turn that vision into a reality.
➢ Product manager responsibilities
➢ Understanding and representing user needs.
➢ Monitoring the market and developing competitive analyses.
➢ Defining a vision for a product.
➢ Aligning stakeholders around the vision for the product.
➢ Prioritizing product features and capabilities.
➢ Creating a shared brain across larger teams to empower independent decision-making.
8.0 Skill developed/learning outcome of this micro-project:
➢ Developed the confidence.
22
➢ Team work.
➢ Thinking power and individual work.
➢ Developed Logic.
➢ Work solving technique.
9.0 Applications of this micro-project:
