Nouns
Definition:
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
• Common nouns: general names (dog, city, school)
• Proper nouns: specific names (Ali, London, McDonald’s) → always start with a capital letter
• Singular nouns: one (cat, book)
• Plural nouns: more than one (cats, books, children)
How to form plural nouns
1. Regular plurals: just add –s
• Most nouns → add –s.
Example:
o cat → cats
o book → books
o car → cars
2. Add –es (for nouns ending in s, ss, sh, ch, x, z)
• If a noun ends in s, ss, sh, ch, x, z → add –es.
Example:
o bus → buses
o box → boxes
o brush → brushes
o church → churches
3. Nouns ending in consonant + y → change y to i, then add –es
• If the word ends with a consonant + y → change y → i and add –es.
Example:
o baby → babies
o lady → ladies
o lily → lilies
(But if it ends in vowel + y, just add –s)
• toy → toys
• key → keys
4. Nouns ending in f or fe → change to v + add –es
• Some nouns ending with f/fe → change to v and add –es.
Example:
o leaf → leaves
o knife → knives
o wolf → wolves
(But some just add –s)
• roof → roofs
• chief → chiefs
5. Irregular plurals (no fixed rule)
Some nouns completely change form.
• man → men
• woman → women
• child → children
• person → people
• foot → feet
• tooth → teeth
• goose → geese
• mouse → mice
• louse → lice
• ox → oxen
(Older/less common forms, but worth knowing)
• die → dice
• cactus → cacti (also cactuses is accepted)
• fungus → fungi (also funguses accepted)
• nucleus → nuclei
• crisis → crises
• thesis → theses
6. No change in plural
Some nouns look the same in singular and plural. The meaning depends on context.
• sheep → sheep
• deer → deer
• fish → fish (though “fishes” = different kinds of fish)
• salmon → salmon
• trout → trout
• moose → moose
• buffalo → buffalo
• bison → bison
• aircraft → aircraft
• spacecraft → spacecraft
• series → series
• species → species
