Preface

Tous les moyens de l’esprit sont enfermés dans le langage; et qui n’a point réfléchi sur
le langage n’a point réfléchi du tout. Alain

When I started developing a preliminary proposal for this volume in October 2004,
my main ambition was to showcase French in the vast arena of Applied Linguistics:
Not only the history of the French language throughout the centuries, but also French
linguists from pioneers such as J. Ronjat or Abbot Charles-Michel l’Epée to my con-
temporary colleagues working in so many diverse subfields of applied linguistics, from
natural language and lexical creativity to French Sign Language, for instance. However,
as my preliminary research progressed, I quickly realized I could not do justice to, nor
include, all of the subfields of applied linguistics, even if I only attempted to focus on
subfields to which French had made a contribution. Even in spite of its wide scope
and thirty nine chapters, Kaplan’s (2002) Oxford Handbook of Applied Linguistics, for
instance, does not claim to “provide a definitive definition of the field. Rather, this vol-
ume offers a snapshot of some of the subfields of applied linguistics at the beginning
of the third millemium – and, thus, a kind of overview of the field” (Kaplan 2002: vii).
The present volume is even more selective in its coverage of French in applied lin-
guistics. The second introductory chapter reviews the history of the French language
from a sociolinguistic perspective. Then, the six chapters of the first part cover what
are most commonly considered the core aspects of the second language acquisition
of any language: Phonology, semantics/syntax, syntax/morphology, pragmatics, soci-
olinguistics, and grammatical gender that alone encompasses lexical, semantic, and
morpho-syntactic knowledge. The seven chapters that compose the second part of
the volume aim at presenting less commonly researched areas of applied linguistics
which also stress the contribution of the French language in various fields such as
language ideology and foreign language pedagogy, corpus linguistics, or French Sign
Language. A chapter also explores the role of affective variables, attitude and person-
ality on language learning, while another investigates how computational approaches
may facilitate lexical creativity. The chapters on creole studies and applied linguistics
in West Africa both address issues in first and second language acquisition in complex
sociolinguistic and political contexts. Finally, the last chapter – “French in Louisiana: A
view from the ground” – serves as an epilogue to illustrate the past, present and future
of French in a region rich in linguistic history.
My most sincere thanks and appreciation go to the numerous colleagues who
served as external anonymous reviewers, providing insightful comments and invalu-

able suggestions. They are listed in alphabetical order: Barry Jean Ancelet, Bruce
Anderson, Jonathan Beck, Kate Beeching, Julie Belz, Carl Blyth, Béatrice Boutin,
Diane Brentari, Barbara Bullock, Tom Cobb, Jean-Marc Dewaele, Paulin Djité, Robert
Gardner, Gaëtanelle Gilquin, Julia Herschensohn, David Hornsby, Gabi Kasper,
Celeste Kinginger, Claire Kramsch, Eric Mathieu, Michael Picone, Philippe Prévost,
Henry Tyne, Salikoko Mufwene, and Muriel Warga.
I would also like to thank my contributors – many of whom were colleagues I
did not know prior to initiating work on this project – for their trust, patience, and
professionalism throughout this journey. It was a pleasure working with all of them.
Last, but not least, I very much appreciated how prompt, professional and reliable
Kees Vaes was, as usual. Sincere thanks also go to Nina Spada and Jan Hulstijn, the
editors for the Language Learning & Language Teaching series, for their careful reading
of the first submission and valuable comments. I truly enjoyed editing this volume, and
sincerely hope it makes an important contribution to the field of applied linguistics in
general, and to second language acquisition in particular.

About the contributors

Bruce Anderson is Assistant Professor of French Linguistics in the Department of

French & Italian at the University of California, Davis, as well as the current di-
rector of that university’s Second Language Acquisition Institute. He specializes in
the acquisition of morphology and syntax in French as a second language from a
generative perspective. Other research interests include corpus linguistics and their
pedagogical applications. Portions of his doctoral dissertation “The Fundamental
Equivalence of Native and Interlanguage Grammars” (Indiana University, 2002) are to
appear in the journals Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics. He is currently re-
searching the acquisition of gender and number morphology among English-speaking
learners of French and Spanish (as L2) and Italian (as L3). He may be contacted at
[email protected]
Dalila Ayoun is Associate Professor of French Linguistics and Second Language Ac-
quisition and Teaching in the Department of French and Italian at the University of
Arizona in Tucson. Her research focuses on the second language acquisition of French
and Spanish from a generative perspective, web/computer-based elicitation task de-
sign, the development of tense/aspect morphology, and grammatical gender. Her most
recent publications include a co-edited, co-authored volume with Rafael Salaberry,
Tense and Aspect in Romance Languages, published by John Benjamins in 2005; and
an article entitled “Verb movement in the L2 acquisition of English by adult native
speakers of French” appeared in 2005 in the EUROSLA Yearkbook edited by S. Foster-
Cohen, M. P. Garcia Mayo, & J. Cenoz, and published by John Benjamins. Her 2003
book, Parameter Setting in Language Acquisition, was released in paperback in 2005
(Continuum Press). She may be contacted at [email protected]
Marion Blondel is Associate scientist, 2nd class (CR2) at the National Centre for
Scientific Research (CNRS) and teaches linguistics at the University of Rouen. Her
research focuses on Sign Languages and deafness. Her most recent publications deal
with bilingual, bimodal acquisition (with Laurie Tuller as a co-author of an article en-
titled “Pointing in bimodal bilingual acquisition: A longitudinal study of LSF-French
bilingual child” to appear in the Volume Leading Research in Sign Language: Selected
Papers from TISLR 2004, edited by J. Quer and published by Signum Verlag) and po-
etic register addressed at children (with Christopher Miller and Anne-Marie Parisot,
“TORTOISE, HARE, CHILDREN: Evaluation and narrative genre in LSQ”, to appear
in the Volume12 of the collection Sociolinguistics in Deaf Communities, edited by Ceil
