About the Editor

Eliana Gil, PhD, is Clinical and Educational Specialist for Childhelp,

Inc., in Fairfax, Virginia. She is also a partner in a private group prac-
tice, the Gil Center for Healing and Play in Fairfax, Virginia, which
provides mental health services to children and families with a variety
of emotional, behavioral, and social problems, where she specializes in
the treatment of traumatized children and their families. A well-known
author, lecturer, and clinician, Dr. Gil has worked in the field of child
abuse prevention and treatment for the last 37 years. Over the past
decade, Dr. Gil directed sexual abuse treatment programs at the Kel-
lar Center and Childhelp Inc., both in Fairfax, Virginia. She is also an
adjunct faculty member at Virginia Tech’s Family Therapy Department,
a registered play therapy supervisor, a registered art therapist, and a
licensed marriage, family, and child counselor. Dr. Gil has served on the
Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse
of Children and the National Resource Center on Child Sexual Abuse,
and is also a former president of the Association for Play Therapy.
Dr. Gil has written numerous books on child abuse and related top-
ics and has several educational videotapes that feature her work (avail-
able from The Guilford Press) as well as a self-published videotape on
family play therapy. Her most recent book is Helping Abused and Trau-
matized Children: Integrating Directive and Nondirective Approaches. Other
books include Cultural Issues in Play Therapy (with Athena A. Drewes);
Treating Abused Adolescents; Systemic Treatment of Families Who Abuse; The

Healing Power of Play; Play in Family Therapy; and Sexualized Children:

Assessment and Treatment of Sexualized Children and Children Who Molest
(with Toni Cavanagh Johnson). Several of her books have been trans-
lated into other languages, including Spanish. Originally from Guaya-
quil, Ecuador, Dr. Gil is both bilingual and bicultural. She consults and
trains locally and across the country and currently conducts intensive
3-day trainings through the Starbright Training Institute for Child and
Family Play Therapy in northern Virginia.
